Photocatalytic C-H Bond Activa: A Sustainable Approach to Oxidative Esterification
A move to more environmentally friendly synthesis of pharmaceuticals and chemical products is highly desired by both the science community and our planet. Currently, the synthesis of unsaturated ketones using C-H bond activation is a key step in the synthesis of progesterone hormone contraceptives, but the current methods have drawbacks, including, but not limited to, the use of strong oxidizing agents and lengthy reaction times. Previous publications have shown titanium dioxide (TiO2) materials doped with NiOx nanoparticles as promising catalysts for C-H bond activation with visible light, but the drawback of the small particle size of TiO2 (~30nm) renders complete catalyst removal, and thus catalyst recycling, difficult. In comparison, KNbO3 has show to be an effective semiconductor in several organic transformations, but requires UV light as an energy source. Nanoparticle functionalization of the semiconductor surface has been shown to extend the photoresponse of the materials into the visible regime of the light spectrum and reduce the activation energy barrier for photocatalysis. The current study will illustrate the promising photocatalytic ability of palladium (Pd) doped KNbO3 in the oxidative esterification of benzyl alcohols, using blue LEDs as energy source. Here, the effect of nanoparticle dopant, oxidative additives, substrate structure and irradiation time will be examined to optimize the process and provide a novel method for an industrially relevant chemical process
A Dynamic Bacterial Community in Symbiotic Amphibian Egg Masses
The subject of this thesis is a symbiosis between egg masses of the yellow-spotted salamander Ambystoma maculatum with the unicellular green alga Oophila amblystomatis. Although this symbiosis is well studied in some regards, the bacterial community within these egg masses is poorly characterized. It is therefore unknown whether the bacteria play any important role in the symbiosis, or affect the embryonic development of the salamander, or influence the populations of either salamander or alga. What species of bacteria can be consistently observed within these egg capsules, if any? Do those bacterial populations change as as a function of embryonic development? Through sampling the fluid from within individual egg capsules from egg masses from three ponds over 2 years, and analyzing DNA sequences of the V4/V5 region of 16S amplicons to identify bacteria and find their relative abundances, I try to answer these questions. Despite serious pitfalls in sampling and sequencing, I was able to conclude that the bacterial communities within the egg capsular fluid do indeed change as the embryo develops--specifically, the communities lose species, and remaining species are more closely related than those of the prior community. I analyze how these patterns are correlated to embryonic development as well as to the pond in which the eggs are laid, and compare how the data from the egg masses of one pond changed from 2019 to 2020. I found that the turnover of the bacterial community can be influenced by the host egg capsule stage of development, by pond, by year, and by interactions between development and year
