Miloš Crnjanski e l’esperienza del Mediterraneo

    No full text
This study explores the poetic and intellectual development of Miloš Crnjanski, focusing on his engagement with Mediterranean cultural spaces and the legacy of classical antiquity. Crnjanski’s early experiences in the multicultural Adriatic city of Rijeka, combined with personal loss and his polyglot education, shaped a literary voice that challenged the nationalistic narratives of early 20th-century literature. His seminal poetry collection Lirika Itake (The Lyrics of Ithaca) reimagines the Odyssean return not as heroic triumph but as a traumatic reckoning with modernity, exile, and the collapse of traditional values. Deeply influenced by classical literature, European modernism, and Mediterranean history, Crnjanski developed Sumatraism, a poetic-philosophical vision grounded in cosmopolitanism and the transformation of suffering into aesthetic transcendence. Through works such as Dnevnik o Čarnojeviću (The Diary about Čarnojević), Crnjanski destabilizes fixed identities, employing fragmented narrative structures and psychological complexity. His engagement with cultural plurality - linking Pannonia, the Adriatic, and the broader Mediterranean - positioned him as a cultural mediator between East and West, North and South. Crnjanski’s poetic geography, spanning from Galicia to Sumatra, blends memory, trauma, and myth to articulate the modern subject’s dislocation. His late reflections, including a 1967 speech in Italian, affirm his belief in poetic internationalism and the indestructibility of the cultural past.

In the autumn of 2024, small-scale archaeological trial excavations were carried out in the sub-hillfort part of the late prehistoric settlement of Kopila on the island of Korčula. Given that this is an area that was subjected to intensive agricultural cultivation in the past, the primary goal of the project was to determine the condition of the archaeological deposits in order to plan further approach to the research of this important site

Constitution of Subject and Identity in Anna Baar’s Novel Als ob sie träumend gingen

    No full text
The novel is a narrative text that alienates historicity, especially the war scenarios in Mediterranean region, and represents them as an expression of memories. The self-knowledge of the protagonist is based on an identity-alterity dynamic that leads to a questioning of the interplay of self and other. Foreignness is charac terized by an increasing loss of love, trust, and humaneness. Dalmatia as experiential space correlates with existential necessity of literary figures and their dissociation from the cultural other. The distanced narrative instance refers to social exclusion of the protagonist and his search for orientation in foreign everyday life

The use of modal verbs in legal texts A German-Croatian case study

    No full text
The focus of this case study is the use of modal verbs as a means of expressing objective modality. The subject of the investigation are the provisions of German tax law for issuing invoices and the corresponding provisions of the Croatian VAT law. The German and Croatian normative text were first analyzed quantitatively and then subjected to a qualitative contentanalysis according to Mayring (2015). The frequency analysis shows that the modal verb können (can) occur most frequently in the German text and the modal verb morati (must) in the Croatian text. It was also found that in the German text there are as many modal verbs as there are modality verbs and constructions with “sein / haben + Infinitiv” (be / have + infinitive) and “verpflichtet sein + zu + Infinitiv” (be obliged + to + infinitive). In the Croatian text, on the other hand, the modalverbs predominate, whereby the construction “je obvezan” (is obligatory) has only a quarter of the modal verbs. The results of this case study serve as a stimulus for more extensive analysis of further texts on tax law in the German and Croatian languages

frömde selczame ding in the traveler’s gaze The construction of intercultural spaces in Konrad Grünemberg’s late medieval account of his pilgrimage to Jerusalem

    No full text
In the second half of the 15th century, numerous Christian pilgrims set out on the arduous and dangerous journey to Jerusalem. The Mediterranean Sea that had to be crossed, specifically the crossing from Venice and Jaffa, is perceived in the pilgrims’ accounts as a space of danger to be overcome, but also as an intercultural space of encounter, and is constructed in narrative terms. This article analyses the construction of this intercultural space using the example of the pilgrimage account of Konrad Grünemberg, who travelled to Jerusalem in 1486. The analysis shows that the pilgrims, depending on their level of education and their respective socialisation, perceive and construct different intercultural spatial layers that differ in terms of their degree of abstraction
