EU Accession to the ECHR: At the End of the Long and Winding Road?

    Get PDF
Accession to the European Convention on Human Rights has been on the European Union’s agenda for decades. The Lisbon Treaty has removed the initial legal barriers, but actual accession has not been achieved to date: the reconciliation of the special characteristics of EU law with the Convention has proved to be a rather complex issue, illustrated well by Opinion 2/13 of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The new draft accession agreement, which was drawn up during the relaunched negotiations, sought to address the issues raised by the Opinion 2/13, but questions remain, in particular regarding legal remedies in the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) as well as the EU law principle of mutual trust. Following an overview of the accession process so far, the paper concentrates on the analysis of these two selected issues, assessing the solutions included in (or indeed missing from) the 2023 draft

Reflections on the Collapse of Our Civilisation The effects of climate change are already part of our everyday lives. Increasingly extreme weather phenomena such as extreme temperature fluctuations, drastic changes in rainfall patterns, “unusually” intense storms or prolonged droughts are phenomena that people in the 21st century will increasingly face as time goes on. Crisis phenomena can be felt in all areas of life, and therefore the complex disturbance affecting our world is called a polycrisis. Are we facing collapse or even extinction in the future, or is there still hope for survival? This paper examines these questions from various aspects

This article proposes that normal classroom activities can be enhanced by adding student-student interaction and by students considering how to apply their learning for social good, i.e., as part of citizenship. These additions can promote learning, enjoyment, and students’ social skills and sense of purpose. The need for these additions and how to implement them are the gap this article seeks to fill. The specific example of this enhancement via cooperation and citizenship involves the K-W-L (Know, Want to know, and Learned) technique. K-W-L can be used in many subjects. While the technique is normally used with reading activities, it can also be used when students watch videos, consult an Artificial Intelligence agent or the internet, etc. This article proposes that normal classroom activities can be enhanced by adding student-student interaction and by students considering how to apply their learning for social good, i.e., as part of citizenship. Afrika-tanulmányok Törökországban és Görögországban – összehasonlító elemzés

For many years, African issues had a low priority in both political and academic circles in Greece and Turkey. However, as far as Turkey is concerned, scientific interest in African issues has gone hand in hand with growing political interest in the continent, with African studies focusing primarily on Turkish-African relations. Regarding the Greek reality, while the Greeks have had an active diaspora in countries of Sub-Saharan Africa for many decades, the state has never formulated any coordinated political proposal to strengthen the country’s relationship with the continent. This lack of central policy leaves the Greek immigrants there absolutely alone to make their mark in their host societies. Respectively, the Greek academic community only in recent years has been dealing with Africa, even though to a limited extent, focusing mainly on issues concerning the Greek diaspora there. Given that in recent decades Greece has become a host country for immigrants and among them, immigrants or even refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa, so, due to this fact the scientific interest in Africa has increased. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to compare the two case studies regarding the status quo of African Studies across them.

Marokkó 2013-as migrációs reformja: Geostratégiai lépés az emberi jogokon túl

Morocco has gained global prominence in migration, evolving into a country of emigration, transit, and immigration. Reinforcing this prominence is its 2013 migration reform, which marked a departure from decades of restrictive policies. Previously, migration was governed by Law 02-03, which focused on security, regarding the entry (immigration), stay (residence), and movement of foreigners, as well as issues related to emigration and irregular immigration. In 2013, King Mohammed VI announced a human rights-driven and participatory migration policy, marking a shift away from security-based measures. While widely praised, this reform raised questions about its underlying drivers and motivation, given several structural and practical inconsistencies. Beyond the outlined social dynamics, this study examines Morocco’s migration reform through Abdelmalek Sayad’s theory of ‘thinking the state’ (1990), which links migration policies to broader geostrategic and diplomatic ambitions. It explores how Morocco’s radical reform has been strategically instrumentalized to forge an international brand image and secure geostrategic and foreign policy goals, particularly in Africa. This study is based on fieldwork (semi-structured interviews) conducted in-person in Morocco and via teleconferencing tools with migration policy experts in Morocco and with Moroccan migration stakeholders, providing insights into the reform’s underlying drivers and its role in shaping Morocco’s regional influence. The fieldwork revealed that Morocco’s migration reform, on the one hand, serves to portray the monarchy as a progressive and human-rights-driven regime, and on the other, enables Morocco to assume a leadership role on both continental and regional levels. 2013-ban VI.

Narrowing windows - A metaphor for the Hungarian collective nervoussystemThe following paper draws parallels between the Hungarian socio-psychological forms of collective threat experience and the concept of chronic traumatisation. The linking of the two entirely different processes takes place in the metaphorical space,i.e. the aim is not to establish a one-to-one or a cause-and-effect correspondence but to unpack the analogy through the conceptual system of the identifier and the identified, which allows us to illustrate certain characteristics of Hungarian socialfunctioning, such as the distinctive collective sense of victimhood or the fixed and persistent state of fear. In this identification, István Bibó\u27s concept of community hysteria and the neurological mechanisms of the complex post-traumatic syndrome(C-PTSD) are analogous, besides Lak off\u27s concept of conceptual metaphor, according to which metaphor is a form of interpreting the world, which also plays a key role

A srebrenicai népirtás emlékezete és turisztikai értelmezése a sötét turizmus kontextusában

This study examines the opportunities and limitations of dark tourism linked to the memory of the Srebrenica genocide. The research is based on primary fieldwork data, statistics from online accommodation booking platforms, and narrative analysis of media content. Findings indicate that although Srebrenica possesses significant natural and cultural assets, tourism development is hindered by ethnic tensions, religiously infused commemorative rituals, the political instrumentalization of collective memory, and infrastructural deficiencies. The Potočari Memorial Center and the Marš Mira serve both commemorative and religious functions, creating a complex yet partly closed tourism experience. For the local community, dark tourism represents a potential economic breakthrough; however, its realization requires an integrated development strategy, strengthening the shared foundations of collective memory, and expanding tourism infrastructure.A tanulmány a srebrenicai népirtás emlékezetéhez kötődő sötét turizmus lehetőségeit és korlátait vizsgálja. A kutatás primer terepmunka-adatokra, online szállásfoglaló portálok statisztikáira és médiatartalmak narratív elemzésére épül. Eredményei rámutatnak, hogy bár Srebrenica jelentős természeti és kulturális adottságokkal rendelkezik, a turizmus fejlődését etnikai feszültségek, vallási színezetű emlékezeti rítusok, a kollektív emlékezet politikai instrumentalizálása és az infrastruktúra hiányosságai gátolják. A Potočari Emlékközpont és a Marš Mira egyszerre töltenek be emlékezeti és vallási funkciót, ami komplex, de részben zárt turisztikai élményt eredményez. A helyi közösség számára a sötét turizmus potenciális gazdasági kitörési pont, ám kiaknázásához integrált fejlesztési stratégia, a kollektív emlékezet közös alapjainak erősítése és a turisztikai infrastruktúra bővítése szükséges
