Braille Identification Tool to Assist Companions of Blind Individuals
In 2017, Indonesia ranked second globally in the number of visually impaired individuals, leading to high dependency on assistance due to a lack of supportive facilities. Existing solutions, like sighted companions labeling items, do not fully address this issue. Ability-based design, leveraging enhanced tactile and auditory senses, can foster greater independence. This research uses the Research through Design (RtD) methodology, involving iterative design, prototyping, and testing cycles. RtD is ideal for refining ideas through continuous improvement, fostering collaboration, and translating theories into practical solutions. The study developed a handheld, portable label maker that prints Braille characters on labels for various surfaces, aiming to reduce dependency on companions. This tool facilitates the daily lives of both visually impaired individuals and their companions. The design process’s iterative nature ensured a practical and effective solution. In conclusion, this study provides insights into designing a Braille label maker to assist visually impaired individuals and their companions. User reviews confirm that the labeling process significantly enhances daily efficiency. The ability-based design approach successfully meets its objectives, highlighting its importance in creating effective solutions for the visually impaired
Indonesia and Corruption: A Parasitical Dynasty
This paper critically analyzes the deep-rooted and systematic corruption plaguing Indonesia, likening its spread to an unstoppable disease originating from the top. Through an empirical and historical lens, the research demonstrates how this pervasive issue has continuously grown in scale, frequency, and intricacy, severely damaging the nation's reputation and deterring investment. Specific cases are examined, including the Century Bank bailout, Jiwasraya fraud, BLBI misuse, PT Timah's illegal mining, the ongoing Pertamina scandal, and the eFishery startup forgery. These incidents underscore how corruption, embedded within state-owned enterprises and beyond, leads to colossal state losses and erodes public confidence. Furthermore, the paper highlights significant impediments to investment, particularly the rampant "premanisme ormas" (thuggery by community organizations). Driven by unemployment and political ties, these groups engage in intimidation and extortion, causing investment cancellations and escalating operational costs. The scarcity of law enforcement exacerbates this issue, fostering impunity. Coupled with Indonesia's protracted and ambiguous legal processes, these factors paint a picture of a business environment where corruption is not merely isolated but a systematic challenge. This environment, characterized by a lack of predictability and reliability, profoundly undermines Indonesia's appeal as a secure investment hub, effectively stifling its immense economic potential
A Comparative Study of Donald Trump’s Tariff Announcements under U.S. and Indonesian Capital Market Law
The capital market in Indonesia rests on the law No. 8 of 1995 on Capital Market, which is enforced by the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The said law contains provisions concerning market conduct and material information disclosure and imposes sanctions for any manipulation or misleading practice in the financial sector. The fact is, however, that the need and practice of the regulatory regime in Indonesia, as compared with that of the U.S., are increased in intensity with respect to such factors as political pronouncements which do not follow the traditional spectrum of sources for market disruption. This comparison of legal systems will give a timely and interesting historic perspective on how capital market laws react to high-profile political communication events. To assess how Trump's proclamations on tariffs would be accommodated under the respective underpinnings of Indonesian and American securities law is thus not only academically enriching but very important for cross-border investors, regulators, and policymakers navigating the increasingly complex politics-financial world intersection. The result is, Indonesian legal and institutional structures have yet to develop to the extent of being capable of controlling these types of incidents well. Capital Market Act No. 8 of 1995 establishes broad definitions of manipulation but regulatory agencies and courts have not yet established clearly defined guidelines regarding how political and public communications affect market behaviors. The Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK) needs to issue clear guidelines on digital communication surveillance and real-time monitoring capabilities since these capabilities are now essential in detecting new types of manipulation. Indonesia needs to implement several steps that will enhance its ability to respond to political distortions in the market. The Indonesian courts and OJK need to build their approach to interpretation through the process of learning comparative legal systems. The U.S. SEC issued landmark decisions via SEC v. The Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. and Basic Inc. v. Levinson decisions are solid precedents to determine whether public releases contain material misstatements or manipulative data. These decisions highlight the significance of materiality as well as scienter (intent) and the trading obligations of individuals possessing non-public information
