CANVAS Syndrome: A Comprehensive Case Report on Rare Ataxia
Introduction: Cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is characterized by cerebellum, vestibular system, and sensory pathways impairments. It progresses slowly compared to other ataxias like Friedreich’s ataxia, and its genetic basis is complex and under investigation.
Case Report: A 34-year-old male presented with worsening imbalance over the past year, vertigo, slurred speech, and hand tremors. Physical examination revealed bidirectional nystagmus, dysmetria, and cerebellar atrophy on MRI. Vestibular tests were abnormal, and neuropsychological assessments showed memory and executive function deficits. Sensory nerve conduction studies were normal.
Discussion: The patient's symptoms of ataxia, vestibular areflexia, and sensory neuropathy are consistent with CANVAS. Cerebellar atrophy and Purkinje cell degeneration contribute to motor coordination deficits. Sensory neuropathy involves dorsal root ganglia degeneration. Despite supportive clinical features, genetic testing is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and exclude other genetic ataxias.
Conclusion: CANVAS is a rare ataxia syndrome with autosomal recessive inheritance affecting the cerebellum, vestibular, and sensory systems. The patient's symptoms and MRI findings suggest CANVAS, but further genetic testing is required for definitive diagnosis
Evaluating The Efficacy of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation In Treating Neurodegenerative Cerebellar Ataxia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Introduction: Neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple system atrophy (MSA), spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), and Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) progressively impair the nervous system, affecting approximately 15% of the global population. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive method, may promote neuroplasticity. The cerebellum, central to motor control and neural connectivity, is a promising rTMS target. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the efficacy of rTMS in treating neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxia. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted per PRISMA guidelines, searching ten databases (to August 9, 2025). Eligible studies were RCTs comparing rTMS with sham in cerebellar ataxia. The review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD420251127471). Study quality was assessed with Cochrane RoB 2.0; meta-analysis used Review Manager 5.4.1, and meta-regression was performed in JASP 0.19.3. Results: Seven RCTs involving a total of 256 patients were included. rTMS significantly improved SARA (SMD = -0.84, p = 0.004, I² = 73%). ICARS showed no significant difference (SMD = -0.82, p = 0.43, I² = 96%). Meta-regression and sensitivity analysis were done to find key heterogeneity sources. Most studies had low bias. Conclusions: rTMS significantly improves SARA scores in neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxia if compared to sham, while ICARS shows insignificant differences. Further research is needed. Keywords: Neurodegenerative ataxia, Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Sham-controlle

Anak Mandiri, Ibu Tetap Berarti: Mattering to Children dan Empty Nest Syndrome pada Ibu
The departure of children from home to pursue education, marriage, or employment is a natural part of the family life cycle. However, this transition often leads to profound feelings of loss in mothers, commonly referred to as empty nest syndrome. A sense of mattering to one’s children is believed to help mothers cope with this condition. This study aimed to examine the relationship between mattering to children and empty nest syndrome in Indonesian mothers. A quantitative method with purposive sampling was employed, involving 107 middle-aged housewives in Indonesia. The study utilized The Mattering Index (MI) and the Empty Nest Syndrome Scale – Indian Form (ENS-IF) as measurement tools. The results showed a significant negative correlation between mattering to children and the level of empty nest syndrome (r = –.686, p < .001). The lower the mothers’ sense of mattering to their children, the higher their level of empty nest syndrome.
EXAMINING DESIGN AS STRATEGY DISCOURSE – Part 2
I will review and examine each case study from the 7 papers in this JSDIS Vol. 6 Edition 1, to build a discourse on Design as Strategy. The framework for reviewing and examining each case study is to use 3 perspectives from the Design as Strategy point of view (Katoppo, 2024) which is also the sub-themes of the National Seminar on Social Design (SNDS) and the International Conference on Social Design (ICSD) 2024 (https://snds.uph.edu/), which are:
1. Body of Knowledge:
The discourse start from the point of its definition to its extent in the design field, namely system design (i.e.: visual communication design), interaction design (i.e.: product design), and spatial design (i.e.: interior design and architecture) (Grimsgaard, 2023).
2. Innovation:
In this discourse, it would investigate the causal relationship between Design as Strategy and Innovation. It will discuss how Design as Strategy becomes the driver of innovation in design practice, design pedagogy, and technology driven design (Bethune, 2022). In the context of technology driven design there are at least 3 innovation categories: the classic technology-driven innovation (Ottinger, 2021), the user- and design-driven innovation (Szymariska, 2017; Duczek, 2021), dan future artificial-driven innovation (Gartner, 2021; Beale, 2022).
3. Contribution to Social Change:
The last discourse would build around the action, where Design as Strategy is implemented to make social change. It will discuss the impact for society, for the environment and for prosperity (Amatullo, et.al (ed.), 2021)

Designing Puberty Learning Mobile Application with Gamification for Children Grade 4-6 Based on UI/UX
Sexuality education and knowledge of puberty in Indonesia are often considered taboo, with misconceptions that it has more negative than positive impacts. The government has yet to implement comprehensive sexuality education in the national curriculum. Research indicates that providing sexuality education significantly reduces the incidence of sexual violence among children. This study employs the Research through Design (RtD) approach, involving iterative cycles of design, prototyping, and testing, to develop a puberty learning mobile application. Methods included literature review, surveys, and interviews with stakeholders, followed by data analysis to create design criteria, prototype testing, and final design development. Results show that although most respondents received some form of puberty education, their knowledge was insufficient, highlighting the need for effective learning tools. The proposed application incorporates gamification, community interaction, and parental guidance features to enhance learning. The study concludes that the interactive and engaging design successfully improves awareness and understanding of sexuality and puberty, with potential for further development

This study focuses on designing the visual identity of Kabba Tourism Village, Minasatene District, Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. to maximize its culinary potential and the natural beauty of its karst formations. A tourism village is a concept where a village leverages its natural, cultural, and culinary wealth to attract tourists. Kabba Village has significant potential in the tourism sector with its unique karst formations and ponds. However, the village faces challenges, including the lack of a distinct visual identity. Kabba Village was ranked in the top 300 of the Anugerah Desa Wisata Indonesia (ADWI) in 2023, indicating its considerable potential. Nevertheless, the village has not yet fully utilized these advantages, particularly in terms of a visual identity that can attract tourists. This study aims to design a visual identity inspired by the natural beauty and culinary richness of Kabba Village, such as its unique karst formations, fish and shrimp products, and the traditional craftsmanship of baka-baka. The research employs the Research and Development (R&D) method with a design thinking approach. Qualitative data were collected using observation, interviews, and secondary data analysis, while the visual identity design was developed through the stages of empathy, reframing, ideation, prototyping, and testing. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for the further development of Kabba Village as a tourism village, or to provide insights for the development of other tourism villages in Indonesia. A strong visual identity is anticipated to enhance Kabba Village’s appeal as a competitive tourism destination in South Sulawesi
Model Pembelajaran Inkuiri Yurisprudensi untuk Mengembangkan Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis Siswa SD pada Pelajaran Pendidikan Agama Kristen [Jurisprudence Inquiry Learning Model to Develop Critical Thinking Skills of Elementary Students in Christian Religious Education Lessons]
Christian education views critical thinking skills as an important aspect because, through critical thinking skills, students are encouraged to differentiate between correct and incorrect information. Critical thinking skills can also guide students to correct knowledge and be able to prove these truths in the classroom. Critical thinking skills in Indonesia are still very low. This is proven by the low PISA results achieved by Indonesia in 2018. Therefore, one way to develop critical thinking skills is to apply the Jurisprudential Inquiry learning model. The Jurisprudential Inquiry learning model can encourage students' critical thinking skills because students are continuously involved in learning to analyze and solve problems. This learning model can also stimulate students' curiosity about something so that students will take the initiative to look for facts and data related to the problem being discussed. This learning model is still relatively new and has been implemented in several middle and upper secondary schools. However, it is still not widely implemented, especially at the elementary school level because it is relatively new. This research aims to examine the importance of the Inquiry Learning Model in developing elementary students' critical thinking skills. The author uses a qualitative descriptive research metho
