Missionary Practice and Cultural Sensitivity: Exploring African Catholic Missionaries’ Encounter with African Indigenous Religions in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Get PDF
Early Western missionaries to Africa have been criticised for lacking cultural sensitivity to African indigenous religion(s) (AIR). This interpretive phenomenological study examines how the presence of Indigenous African Catholic missionaries in modern sub-Saharan Africa may have shifted the narrative of missionary encounters. It investigates how these missionaries navigate and experience cultural sensitivity within the context of their work. This study is based on the theoretical frameworks of inculturation and dialogue, informed by the Second Vatican Council’s focus on interreligious dialogue and Pope John Paul II’s advocacy for evangelising African cultures. Eight African missionaries from Western, Eastern, Central and Southern sub-Saharan Africa participated in this study, providing narrative data through semi-structured interviews. African missionaries have indicated both cultural sensitivity and insensitivity towards AIR, with some missionaries appreciating shared values and actively engaging in respectful interactions with AIR. However, challenges emerge in this interaction, including navigating cultural differences, syncretism, historical prejudices and theological dilemmas. Despite these challenges, indigenous missionaries are committed to inculturation and dialogue, incorporating certain indigenous practices into worship and developing culturally relevant pastoral approaches. The study recommends developing culturally sensitive evangelistic approaches that not only value and respect indigenous identities and spiritualities but also promote mutual understanding and social unity

In today’s increasingly advanced era, where many women are required to drive their own vehicles, it is common to see women driving alone, particularly in four- wheeled vehicles, on the roads. Any vehicle, including four-wheelers, is at risk of experiencing a flat tire while on the road. This issue can affect female drivers just as it does any other driver, as all vehicles and drivers face similar risks. Specifically, women may not know how to change a tire or may be unfamiliar with the process. Most of them are not well-acquainted with using the toolkit provided by the manufacturer. The research utilizes a Research Through Design (RTD) approach, which involves iterative cycles of design, prototyping, and testing. This method allows for continuous refinement and evaluation of design concepts. Data collection was conducted through literature reviews and focus group discussions. We gathered several sources and invited participants to engage in tire-changing experiments under supervision. After the tire-changing activity, we discussed their experiences with them, focusing on what they found most difficult and what they found easiest. From the data collected, the most challenging tasks identified were aligning the tire with the bolt holes and jacking up the vehicle, as these two processes were the most time-consuming and physically demanding for them

    Get PDF
Digitalization refers to the process of converting something into digital form. This can be observed in various real-life examples, ranging from digitized documents and images to digitized assets. The latter, in particular, includes non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are unique units of data stored on blockchains that represent physical assets such as artwork, digital content, or videos. Although NFTs are subject to copyright law, how this law is implemented has been evolving. This paper aims to examine the impact of NFTs on copyright law enforcement in Indonesia and explore whether NFTs can be used as collateral

How Artificial Intelligence Generated Content may go against Intellectual Property Rights

    Get PDF
Artificial Intelligence, or shortened as AI, has immense ability to generate creative content such as text, images, music, designs and much more. However this raises the question about authorship, authenticity and the ownership of AI generated works. Intellectual property rights (IPR) frameworks may face hardships to accommodate AI driven innovation and production, especially with the lack of laws regarding Artificial Intelligence relating with Intellectual Property Rights, Which necessitates a re-examination of existing laws and regulations. Additionally, the potential of AI to analyze vast amounts of data in the internet and identify patterns, challenges the concept of originality, which is a key criterion for Intellectual Property Rights and protection. However, on the other hand, Artificial Intelligence may boast benefits and actually be a powerful tool for IPR as AI powered systems can effectively analyze large volumes of data to identify potential infringements, streamline patent searches, and enhance IPR monitoring

The capital market plays a crucial role in the national financial system as an intermediary and a source of long-term financing. In the era of globalization, Indonesia's capital market is increasingly exposed to systemic risks triggered by global economic crises, such as the US-China trade war and the 2008 financial crisis. This research aims to review the readiness of Indonesia’s capital market regulations in facing systemic risks from a juridical perspective. The method used is a normative juridical approach, analyzing Law No. 8 of 1995 on Capital Market, OJK regulations, and other relevant policies. The findings reveal that although the current regulations provide a legal foundation for supervision and investor protection, they are not fully adaptive to global systemic risks. Macroprudential provisions are still limited, and regulatory responses tend to be reactive. Therefore, strengthening regulations through the integration of macroprudential principles, improved institutional coordination, and risk-based policy reforms is necessary. This will enable Indonesia’s capital market to be more resilient in facing global pressures and maintaining stability as part of the national financial system

Usaha Mikro, Kecil, dan Menengah (UMKM) play a strategic role in Indonesia's economy, contributing significantly to the national GDP and employment. However, UMKM still face classic constraints in the form of limited access to capital. The capital market as a means of mobilizing funds can be an alternative source of financing for UMKM. This research aims to analyze the role of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in providing capital access for UMKM and the legal regulations for UMKM share listings that protect the interests of UMKM actors. The research method used is normative legal research with a statutory approach and conceptual approach. The results show that IDX acts as a facilitator and regulator connecting UMKM with investors through initiatives such as the Acceleration Board with simplified listing requirements. Various investment products such as stocks, corporate bonds, sukuk, and securities crowdfunding are available for UMKM. Protection of UMKM interests is reflected in various regulations, from Article 33 paragraph (4) of the 1945 Constitution, Capital Market Law, POJK Number 53/POJK.04/2017, to IDX Regulation Number I-V which prohibits large companies from controlling UMKM issuers on the Acceleration Board. Another important breakthrough is the introduction of Individual Corporations through the Job Creation Law which allows UMKM to obtain legal entity status, thereby expanding access to formal financing including the capital market. Coordination between institutions and regulatory harmonization is needed to create a conducive ecosystem for UMKM development through the capital market

Most 11th-grade science students exhibit low motivation and struggle with understanding chemistry because it is perceived as abstract, difficult, and irrelevant to everyday life, as evidenced by diagnostic test results showing persistent misconceptions in writing chemical reaction equations and equivalents. To address this issue, a problem-based learning (PBL) strategy is implemented to facilitate students' understanding of concepts through real-world problems.Structured assignments based on case study worksheets complement the students' learning process and become a bridge for them to see God's providence in His creation. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of applying PBL to stoichiometric solution material in 11th grade using a descriptive qualitative method. Overall, the PBL approach enhances students' motivation and aids in comprehending abstract material. The learning outcomes showed that from 19 students, more than 10 successfully wrote ion equations, identified types of chemical reactions, and performed stoichiometric calculations when analyzing various real-world problems. The author acknowledges that not all students can capture all concepts in a limited time, because in the process there is still a need for personal guidance from the teacher for each student. Therefore, to improve future outcomes, it is crucial to provide special time for independent learning, enabling students to develop a deeper understanding and critical thinking skills. Get PDF
Introduction: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most prevalent form of epilepsy. Postictal fugue, a state of altered consciousness and amnesia that can lead to unusual behaviors, is an unusual type of postictal phase in TLE. This case report describes a rare case of postictal fugue in adult-onset TLE. Case Report: A 27-year-old man with complaints of recurrent seizures over the past six years, described as blank staring accompanied by purposeless action with each episode lasting 5-10 minutes on average. During the episodes, he can perform various activities without the ability to recall the events after regaining consciousness. There were neither aura nor specific triggers preceding the episodes. Some long-term memories are impaired. No other cognitive impairment is found. There was a long-standing history of substance use. Electroencephalogram examinations revealed abnormal spikes wave in bilateral temporal region. Discussion: The patient’s symptoms resemble dissociative fugue but is attributed to an organic etiology, which is mesial/limbic TLE. The postictal phase which manifests as postictal fugue is caused by the abnormal electrical activity in the hippocampus leading to disruption in memory formation and spatial navigation. The underlying mechanism causing epilepsy is thought to be related to the prolonged history of substance abuse. Conclusion: The postictal phase in TLE can present in various forms and may be challenging to diagnose. Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly investigate the causes of organic dissociative disorder, including postictal fugue in TLE
