Explicit Deposit Insurance and Bank Risk-Taking: Does Banking Supervision Matter?

    Get PDF
This study explores the influence of supervisory powers and structure of a banking supervisor on the bank’s risk-taking caused by the implementation of explicit deposit insurance (EDI). We explore the data of publically traded 1,936 banks of 96 countries, from the Bank scope during 2002 to 2015. Using the Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM), findings revealed that banking supervision reduces the moral hazard of bank’s risk-taking in non-crisis affected countries, either allocated supervisory powers are low or high. Additionally, conferring the greater supervisory authority to banking supervisor strengthened the financial health of banks amongst both crisis and non-crisis affected countries. Furthermore, central bank working as a banking supervisor with greater supervisory powers seemed to mitigate the moral hazard of bank’s risk-taking. While central bank’s low supervisory powers have little or no impact to controlling the bank risk-taking. Hence, the allocation of greater supervisory powers to a central bank heightens the investors and depositors’ confidence in the depository financial institutions

Relationship between Oil Price and White Precious Metals Return: A New Evidence from Quantile-on-Quantile Regression

    Get PDF
The present study examines the effects of oil price on white precious metal returns by using quantile-on-quantile regression proposed by Sim and Zhou (2015). In this study, we mainly focus on the returns of three white precious metals, which include palladium, silver, and platinum. The study is conducted on the monthly data of crude oil price and white precious metals from the period of January 2000 to December 2016. We use QQR approach to capture the complete picture of the studied relationship. Unlike conventional techniques, QQR provides the comprehensive results of the variables at distinct quantiles. Similarly, the ARDL technique has also been used. Results reveal that the change in global oil price increases the returns of platinum and palladium. Whereas, an insignificant relationship has been found between the oil prices and silver returns. Results indicate that palladium and platinum both precious metals act as a safe haven for investors. In contrast, change in oil prices will not lead to high silver returns. Therefore, investors need to be prudent while investing in silver. These results have important policy implications for policymakers and investors

How Do Independent Directors View CEO Pay Disparity In China?

    Get PDF
Given the vital role of independent directors in determination of executives’compensation, we explore how independent directors view the CEO pay disparity. Using the data of all companies listed on the Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges for the period 2005 to 2015, we find that the proportion of independent directors on the board is negatively associated with the extent to which executives’ pay is dispersed. This finding suggests that independent directors view the dispersion of the CEO’s and other executive directors’ pay from the managerial power theory perspective rather than from the tournament theory

This paper investigates the existing political environment in Pakistan and its impact of women entrepreneurial performance. The importance of having a stable political environment for flourishing entrepreneurial activities has also been discussed. For this purpose, the study employs a research design where self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from two groups of Pakistani women entrepreneurs; Registered and Non-Registered. The registered members were selected from the seven women chambers of commerce and industries of Pakistan using a stratified random sampling method whereas the non-registered members were selected from the groups on Facebook. The quantitative method of research has been employed using sample size of 506. Multiple regression analyses reveal that there is an impact of political factors on women entrepreneurial performance for both the groups. The results also show that women entrepreneurs believe that government is not supporting them for carrying out the activities for running their enterprises

This study aims to investigate the mediating role of absorptive capacity (ACAP) between intellectual capital (IC) and organizational innovation in the context of Higher education institutions (HEI) of Punjab Pakistan. This study used a structured questionnaire to collect the data from employees of HEI Pakistan. This study uses a covariance-based structural equation modeling technique (CB-SEM) for data analysis through AMOSE software. This study performed CB-SEM in two steps; confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and SEM analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis ensures the reliability and validity of the construct while SEM analysis was used to test the modeled hypothesis. The study found that IC has a significant positive relationship with ACAP and organizational innovation. ACAP has a significant and positive relationship with organizational innovation and also plays a mediating role between IC and organizational innovation. The study will help the HEIs of Pakistan to boost innovation activities more effectively in order to improve their innovations performance. This study enriches the theoretical literature of IC by using five dimensions, human, social, structural, relational and spiritual capital, of IC and by suggesting a new path for organizational innovations. Moreover, a few studies investigated a relationship between IC and organizational innovation with the mediating role of absorptive capacity; however, in HEIs Pakistan context, no study exists. This study can be reproduced in another sector like information and communication technology and the banking sector

The main purpose of this research is to analyze those factors that affect the knowledge sharing and can lead the conventional banking sector towards enhancing the innovation capabilities by creating the culture of organizational learning. The model of this research paper is tested using a sample of 300 employees occupying the position of officer grade I, II and III in conventional banking sector of Bahawalpur. Researchers have used the simple random sampling technique for the collection of data with the help of questionnaire. SPSS version 21 is used to analyze data collected for this research paper. The result shows that out of nine factors, seven factors namely individual personality, individual attitude, reward and recognition, competence based trust, benevolence based trust, ICT infrastructure and availability and ICT know how are all significantly and positively related with the innovation capabilities as well as knowledge sharing and thus knowledge sharing also mediates between them. But the two factors centralization and formalization have an insignificant relationship with the innovation capabilities and knowledge sharing. Hence, no mediation takes place between them. Moderator; organizational learning also plays a significant role between knowledge sharing and innovation capabilities. This research paper has a significant managerial implication that it helps the managing bodies of conventional banks to pay an attention on these factors like individual personality, individual attitude, reward and recognition, competence based trust, benevolence based trust, ICT infrastructure and availability and ICT know how in order to enhance the innovation capabilities. The incorporation of individual personality, individual attitude, reward and recognition, competence based trust, benevolence based trust, ICT infrastructure and availability and ICT know how in order to enhance the innovation capabilities. Model offers a new theoretical lens and an alternative explanation for the determinants influencing the knowledge sharing that leads to innovation capabilities

The study seeks to examine the role of perceived usefulness (PU) and confirmation (CN) on continuance usage intention of mobile social commerce (CI) and on user satisfaction (S). Furthermore, it examines the role of continuance intention and user satisfaction on brand loyalty (BL). Also, this study seeks to examine the role of gender and online shopping experience. This study also validates the model that combines brand loyalty and expectation confirmation model (ECM) in the mobile social commerce context. For this, the data was collected from a sample of 344 respondents from Pakistan and structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied using Amos 22. Results of the study reveal that PU is influenced by CN whereas CN does not have an impact on S. Furthermore, PU established a significant impact on S and CI, but S does not assure CI. Likewise, S and CI both have an impact on BL. The study also found differences in consumer behavior based on gender and online shopping experience. This study is helpful to the social commerce companies as it identifies the key elements that boost brand loyalty. Hence, this study recommends numerous managerial implications

Evaluating Result Based Management (RBM) and the Need for Complexity Aware Management Approach for International Development Agencies

    Get PDF
Result Based Management (RBM) is a widely used management approach in international development agencies. During the last two decades, there have been growing concerns regarding the rigidity of this approach; and both the scholars and practitioners have been calling for an alternate complexity aware adaptive approach. However, there remains a lack of empirical evidence to support this criticism. The objective of this study is to contribute towards this end by undertaking an empirical evaluation of the efficacy of the RBM approach and assessing the need for a flexible and adaptive approach. Since the tool to measure the implementation of RBM is not available, we at first developed and validated a tool for measuring the implementation of RBM. Subsequently, by collecting data from 206 middle and senior levels employees of development agencies, the relationship between RBM and the ability of agencies to adapt has been tested. The validity of the instrument was established through exploratory factor analysis and hypotheses were tested by regression analysis. The findings showed that RBM negatively affects the adaptability of development agencies and hence calls for developing an alternate flexible and adaptive approach hold merit

    Get PDF
Benevolent leadership has emerged as a contemporary leadership style that has scantly been studied. To address this gap in literature, current research pursues a threefold objective. First, it validates the measurement scale of benevolent leadership in the context of Pakistan. Second, it tests the effect of benevolent leadership on employees’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Third, it studies the role of perceived organizational support (POS) and perceived organizational politics (POP) as potential moderators. Data was collected from a representative sample of 202 information technology companies operating in Pakistan through structured questionnaires. Confirmatory factor analysis via AMOS was conducted to validate the measurement scale. Model fit indices, AVE and Fornell & Larcker criteria provided the evidence of its validity, while reliability was ensured through Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability measures. The analysis through linear regression and PROCESS MACRO revealed that benevolent leadership enhances employees’ OCB. Furthermore, POP and POS moderate the relationship between benevolent leadership and employees’ OCB
