    The Prados del Cervunal morainic complex: Evidence of a MIS 2 glaciation in the Iberian Central System synchronous to the global LGM

    The area of Prados del Cervunal (PC) is an intra-morainic topographic depression located at 1800 m asl in the divide or interfluve between Garganta de Gredos and Garganta del Pinar valleys (Central Gredos; Iberian Central System, ICS). Both valleys, along with the adjacent Hoya Nevada, were occupied by glaciers during the Upper Pleistocene, leading to the development of the Prados del Cervunal moraine complexes studied in this work. Using cartographic methods and morphostratigraphic analysis, the three main glacial formations established in the Regional Chrono-Evolutionary Pattern for the ICS, Peripheral Deposits (PD), Principal Moraine (PM) and Internal Deposits (ID), have been identified and mapped in this area. The chronology of these formations has been implemented by Cosmic Ray Exposure (CRE) techniques using 10Be (new data) and 26Cl (previous data, recalculated in this work) in samples from morainic boulders. With these data, the following chrono-evolutionary sequence has been established: (stage 1) local-Maximum Ice Extent (MIE), dated in 25.0± 1.4 ka and corresponding to the maximum age obtained in these paleoglaciers; (stage 2) period of oscillations around the MIE, corresponding to the development of the PD Formation between-25 ka and-21 ka; (stage 3) period of readvance and sta-bilisation, dated after-21 ka (average age obtained for the PD moraines attached to PM moraines) and previous to-18 (minimum age obtained for a main crest of the PM formation); and (stage 4) onset of deglaciation dated around to-18 ka (average of ages obtained for the first main crest of the ID forma-tion). During the stages of maximum ice expansion, these three glaciers formed an Ice field whose tongues were interconnected on the PC flat by an ice transfluence system (stages 1 and 2, Plateau Glacier Period). In later stages, the ice masses were partitioned, giving rise to valley glaciers and large moraines forming morainic complexes like those of PC (stages 2, 3 and 4, Valley Glaciers Period). The local MIE and onset of deglaciation stages in this area show a good fit with the ages stablished to global level for the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the onset of the Last Glacial Termination (Termination I). They also show good correlation at local (with other areas of the ICS), peninsular (with other Iberian moun-tains) and continental (some areas of the Alps and mountains of Central Europe) level. Finally, this evolutionary sequence and its correlations allowed us to adjust and validate some units of the Regional Chrono-Evolutionary Pattern model and propose the Gredos-Pinar-Cabeza Nevada glacial system as benchmark for the glaciation of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 in the Iberian Peninsula.& COPY; 2023 The Authors.     Anthropometric Profile and Physical Activity Level as Predictors of Postural Balance in Overweight and Obese Children

    Overweightness and obesity can negatively influence many activities, including postural balance and locomotion, increasing predisposition to injury and risk of falls due to limitations on the biomechanics of daily living. The present study aimed to determine the influence of the anthropometric profile and physical activity level (PAL) on the postural balance of overweight and obese children. The sample included 387 schoolchildren (216 boys and 171 girls). The variables of the anthropometric profile studied were body mass, biped height, BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), summation of folds, body composition, and somatotype. PAL was measured using the PAQ-C questionnaire. Static and dynamic postural balance were measured through an open-eye (OE) and closed-eye (CE) posturographic test and the SEBTm, respectively. For static balance, the significant models were for mediolateral velocity (R-2 = 0.42 in OA; R-2 = 0.24 in OC), anteroposterior velocity (R-2 = 0.21 in OA; R-2 = 0.27 in OC), and mean velocity (R-2 = 0.27 in OA; R-2 = 0.46 in OC), where the predictors of low performance were younger age, male sex, overweight/obese nutritional status, greater thickness of skin folds, less tendency to mesomorphy, and greater fat mass. On the other hand, for dynamic postural balance, the significant models were observed in the previous direction (R-2 = 0.39), posteromedial (R-2 = 0.57), and posterolateral (R-2 = 0.56), where the variables that predict a low performance were low PAL, overweight/obese nutritional status, and high WHR. Overweight and obese children presented a deficit in static and dynamic postural balance, enhanced by variables such as gender, age, PAL, and anthropometric characteristics related to adiposity

    Tree-ring d 18Ocellulose variations in two Nothofagus species record large-scaleclimatic signals in the South American sector of the Southern Ocean

    In recent decades, southernmost South America (50-56(?) S) has experienced marked climate change (regional warming, decreased precipitation, reduced snow cover, and increased frequency of heat waves) related to variations in atmospheric circulation over varied timescales. In this paper, we develop oxygen isotopes from tree ring cellulose (d(18)OTRC) as a proxy for climate and atmospheric circulation in order to extend the regional meteorological record to deeper time intervals. Our work focuses on Nothofagus forests in two areas: (i) deciduous N. pumilio forest in the steppe transition zone near Punta Arenas and (ii) humid evergreen N. betuloides forest in the Navarino Island region. To investigate the potential for reconstructing palaeoclimate, d(8)OTRC variations were correlated with local climate parameters as well as regional (Amundsen Sea Low, ASL) and hemispheric (Antarctic Oscillation, AAO) atmospheric circulation modes for the last 60 years. N. betuloides d(18)OTRC variations show an overall positive trend, indicating isotopic enrichment over the study period, whereas no trend is recorded for the N. pumilio record. The strongest relationships with climate, together with the widest spatial representativeness, occur in the N. betuloides chronology during the growing season (spring to austral summer) and extend spatially from mid to high latitudes. In contrast, the sensitivity of the records is limited to summer months, and spatial correlations are much more limited. In addition, the N. betuloides record shows greater potential for reconstructing local climate features such as soil water (r = 0.76), wind speed (r = 0.69), and precipitation (r = 0.66), as well as regional (ASL, r = 0.80) and hemispheric (AAO, r = 0.77) patterns of extratropical atmospheric circulation. Overall, we conclude that the N. betuloides record represents the most valuable tree-ring climate proxy for southernmost South America over past centuries

    Fires and rates of change in the temperate rainforests of northwestern Patagonia since-18 ka

    We examine the temporal and spatial structure of wildfires and rates of vegetation change in the Pacific sector of northwestern Patagonia (40 degrees-44 degrees S) over the last-18,000 years. Macroscopic Charcoal Accu-mulation Rates (CHAR), a proxy of past local fires, shows a geographic variation that mirrors the modern north-to-south and low-to-high elevation increase in annual precipitation and decrease in precipitation seasonality, and the frequency of explosive volcanic events. Variability in past fires is evident at multiple timescales, with a significant multi-millennial low between-18-13.1 ka, an abrupt rise between-13.1 -12.5 ka, and heightened fire activity between-11.4-8.2 ka with significant high values between-10 -9.4 ka. A subsequent decline led to the lowest Holocene values between-6-5.4 ka, which rose and led to significant high values between-3.1 ka and the present. Andean and Western Upwind Environments share a multi-millennial structure of fire activity since-18 ka, overprinted by millennial and centennial -scale divergences. These differences underscore the role of explosive volcanism as a trigger or modulator of fire activity in the vicinity of Andean eruptive centers. We posit that fire activity in Western Upwind Environments was driven primarily by hydroclimate variations, namely changes in the intensity of the Southern Westerly Winds. Compilations of CHAR and the Rates of Change (ROC) parameter, a measure of the magnitude and rapidity of changes in the pollen records, covary during the onset of the interglacial fire regime at-13.1 ka and the last-4000 years, suggesting that fires catalyzed vegetation changes during specific intervals since the last glaciation. Highly mobile human occupations deployed along the coasts started at-6.2 ka, increased in pulses, and spread widely during the last two millennia. Covariation with CHAR and ROC since-4 ka suggests that hunter-gatherer -fishers contributed to enhanced fire activity and abrupt vegetation changes at regional scale. The ubiquitous fire maximum over the last four cen-turies relates to widespread settlement and associated large-scale land clearance conducted by Euro-pean/Chilean settlers.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.     Genetic footprints of Quaternary glacial cycles over the patterns of population diversity and structure in three Nacella (Patellogastropoda: Nacellidae) species across the Magellan province in southern South America

    Quaternary glaciations severely altered landscape/seascape at high latitudes and had major consequences on species geographical ranges, population sizes, genetic differentiation and speciation rates. The Magellan province in southern South America, constitutes an interesting area to evaluate the effect of glaciations over near-shore marine benthic organisms. Existing data have showed clear signatures of population genetic bottlenecks during glacial maxima followed by recent recolonizations and expansions during the interglacial. Here, we present new population-based analyses in species of the patellogastropod genus Nacella (N. deaurata, N. magellanica, and N. mytilina). The species N. magellanica and N. deaurata inhabit rocky ecosystems while N. mytilina lives closely associated with kelps. The analyzed species exhibit narrow bathymetric ranges and consequently should have been severely affected by recurrent glacial cycles. We performed phylogeographic and demographic analyses in Nacella species including different localities across their respective distributions in the Magellan province including the Falkland/Malvinas Islands (F/M). Genetic analyses showed that all Nacella species exhibited low levels of genetic diversity, the presence of single dominant broadly distributed haplotypes, lack of correlation between geographical and genetic distance, and recent demographic growths, which are evidence supporting rapid postglacial expansions. Such results may have been facilitated by larval and/or rafting-mediated dispersal following the Cape Horn Current System. The three species showed strong and significant differentiation between F/M and southern Pacific margin (SPM) populations including localities across the Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn. Haplotype genealogies and mismatch analyses recognized older and more complex demographic histories in the F/M than in South America. Different glaciological histories between SPM and F/M may be responsible of the marked phylogeographic structure in the analyzed species of Nacella. Alternatively, as previously proposed, the F/M represent a glacial refugium for Nacella species (sink area), as well as a secondary contact zone where endemic haplotypes are found together with recently arrived South American ones. Historical and contemporary processes, contrasting glacial histories between the analyzed areas, as well as life history traits of the analyzed organisms are main factors explaining current phylogeographic patterns of shallow Magellan marine benthic organisms

    Summer temperature changes in Tierra del Fuego since AD 1765: atmospheric drivers and tree-ring reconstruction from the southernmost forests of the world

    Proxy climate records, such as those derived from tree rings, are necessary to extend relatively short instrumental meteorological observations into the past. Tierra del Fuego is the most austral territory with forests in the world, situated close to the Antarctic Peninsula, which makes this region especially interesting for paleoclimatic research. However, high-quality, high-resolution summer temperature reconstruction are lacking in the region. In this study we used 63 tree-ring width chronologies of Nothofagus pumilio and Nothofagus betuloides and partial least squares regression (PLSR) to produce annually resolved December-to-February temperature reconstruction. The resulting reconstruction extends back to AD 1765 and explains 37-50% of instrumental temperature variability. We found that observed summer temperature variability in Tierra del Fuego is primarily driven by the fluctuations of atmospheric pressure systems both in the South Atlantic and South Pacific, while it is insignificantly correlated to major hemispheric modes: El Nino-Southern Oscillation and Southern Annular Mode. This fact makes our reconstruction important for climate modelling experiments, as it represents specific regional variability. Our reconstruction can be used for direct comparison with model outputs to better understand model limitations or to tune a model. The reconstruction can contribute to larger scale reconstructions based on paleoclimatic data assimilation. Moreover, we showed that PLSR has improved performance over principal component regression (PCR) in the case of multiple tree-ring predictors. According to these results, PLSR may be a preferable method over PCR for the use in automated tree-ring based reconstruction approaches, akin widely used point-by-point regression

    Identificación de Bacterias de Suelo Antártico que Presentan Actividad Antiproliferativa Sobre una Línea Celular de Cáncer de Colon

    Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world and colorectal cancer is the only cancer that has shown a sustained increase in mortality in the last decade. In the search for new chemotherapeutic agents against cancer, extremophilic microorganisms have shown to be a potential source to obtain molecules of natural origin and with selective cytotoxic action towards cancer cells. In this work we analyzed the ability of a collection of Antarctic soil bacteria, isolated on Collins Glacier from the rhizosphere of Deschampsia antarctica Desv plant, to secrete molecules capable of inhibiting cell proliferation of a colorectal cancer tumor line. Our results demonstrated that culture supernatants from the Antarctic bacteria K2I17 and MI12 decreased the viability of LoVo cells, a colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of the Antarctic bacteria showed that they were taxonomically related and nucleotide identity analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence identified the bacterium K2I17 as a species belonging to the genus Bacillus

    Biocultural homogenization in elementary education degree students from contrasting ecoregions of Chile

    Biocultural homogenization is a wicked problem that implies the loss of biological and cultural diversity at different scales. It is promoted by globalized one-dimensional ways of thinking that ignore the biophysical and cultural singularities of the heterogeneous regions of the planet. In Chile, we find ecoregions as diverse as the arid Norte Grande, the semi-arid Mediterranean Metropolitan region, and the temperate rainforests in the south. We studied the perceptions that elementary education degree students (EEDS) have regarding the flora and fauna (co-inhabitants), their environments (habitats), and their daily customs or activities (habits) in these three ecoregions. We distributed 72 questionnaires to students from 3 universities in 2021, asking them about co-inhabitants, habitats, and habits. We identified similarities and differences between the responses. Similarities were associated with biocultural homogenization processes evidenced by the prevalence of vertebrate animals and vascular plants, or introduced species, such as domestic animals, and cultivated plants for edible, ornamental, and medicinal purposes. Differences were associated with biocultural conservation processes such as the collection of native species of mushrooms, plants and animals for food use, or the knowledge of ritual celebrations typical of their localities. We propose that teaching study programs should aim to redirect biocultural homogenization processes toward biocultural conservation processes. That way teachers can play a key role in teaching future generations to learn and value both local and scientific knowledge about the diversity of co-inhabitants, habitats, and the life habits in each of their ecoregions

    UTILIZAÇÃO DO PACIENTE VIRTUAL NO PROCESSO DE APRENDIZAGEM EM FONOAUDIOLOGIA

    Introducción: Para la formación en audiometría clínica, es indispensable la experiencia práctica con pacientes reales para adquirir habilidades clínicas. Sin embargo, se ha presentado limitaciones debido a la escasez de pacientes para el entrenamiento. Con el propósito de abordar estas limitaciones, el programa Otis the Virtual Patient ha brindado a los estudiantes de audiología la posibilidad de practicar el procedimiento de audiometría, a través de una variedad de casos clínicos, en una interfaz de computadora sin la necesidad de pacientes reales. Objetivo: Evaluar la efectividad y la calidad de la simulación con el uso de OTIS, como una herramienta educativa o de formación. Metodología: Participaron 14 estudiantes de tercer año de la asignatura de Audiología. La obtención del consentimiento para la participación de los estudiantes se realizó a través de un formulario electrónico. El entrenamiento se realizó utilizando el simulador de paciente virtual OTIS, utilizando casos clínicos con distintos tipos de discapacidad auditiva. Se utilizo el Cuestionario de Jeffries (QJSC). Se evaluó utilizando preguntas de valor de 6 puntos desde “Muy en desacuerdo” hasta “No es aplicable”. Resultados: Los resultados revelaron que los estudiantes demostraron una percepción positiva en el desarrollo de habilidades clínicas en audiometría. Valoraron positivamente a OTIS como una herramienta útil en su formación profesional. Además, apreciaron la autenticidad y realismo de las experiencias simuladas. Conclusiones: La experiencia con el simulador promovió un enfoque activo y participativo en el aprendizaje, que contribuyó a aumentar la confianza y autoeficacia de los estudiantes en futuras situaciones clínicas reales

    A techno-economic assessment for fuel cells hybrid systems in stationary applications

    This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of integrating fuel cells into stand-alone power generation systems, combined with different technologies such as diesel generators, wind turbines, and batteries. An optimisation analysis was performed using the Hybrid Optimization Model for Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) software to minimise energy costs and several system architectures were obtained for different operating scenarios. The performance and cash flow of the selected system were included. The results suggest that the combination of traditional technologies for fuel cell power generation could be feasible for a country like Colombia, depending on economic factors such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the discount rate, and the availability of renewable resources. The proposed system achieves a Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of $0.112/kWh, comparable to state-of-the-art systems in the literature. This research contributes to the global effort of transitioning to alternative energy sources and reducing carbon emissions
