Phronesis: racjonalność hermeneutyczna
The paper is an attempt to rethink the problem of rationality in the humanities in the context of hermeneutics. The author argues that this concept of rationality must be founded on the Aristotelian concept of practical reason (phronesis). Phronesis is a need for discernment of the self or rather to find itself in its own, tangible, specific situation. This understanding concerns Being-inthe-world and belongs to what in Martin Heidegger’s ontohermeneutics we can determine precisely as understanding in the hermeneutic sense
Spotkanie Gadamera z Derridą – spojrzenie pragmatysty
The paper offers a philosophical commentary on the widely discussed 1981 meeting of Derrida and Gadamer at Paris’ Goethe Institute. These two figures “virtually personify, in hermeneutics and deconstruction, the two major and rival ‘schools’ of contemporary continental philosophy associated with the primacy of interpretation.” Adopting a pragmatist perspective, the author discusses their approaches to the issue of interpretation – different and often seen as mutually exclusive. He claims that Derrida and Gadamer in fact have a great deal in common and tries to show that American pragmatism offers a mode of mediation, which allows us to grasp their mutual relations. The author concentrates on the three central issues that emerge from Derrida’s Three Questions to Hans-Georg Gadamer, namely the context of interpretation, consensual continuity versus rupture as the basis or precondition of interpretation, and the nature or possibility of perfect dialogical understanding. The paper offers a philosophical commentary on the widely discussed 1981 meeting of Derrida and Gadamer at Paris’ Goethe Institute. Od Ryby ku Rybaczówkom. Bishop Barańczaka
The article discusses the immanent poetics of Elizabeth Bishop reconstructed the poet and critic Stanisław Barańczak, the translator of the Polish selection of her 33 wiersze [33 Poems] (1995). The reconstruction produced by Barańczak highlights the resemblance between Bishop’s poetics and his own – poetic constructivism, precision, the mastery of form – therefore confronting his essay on Bishop from 33 wiersze with an interpretative sketch by Andrzej Sosnowski, also a poet, literary critic and Bishop’s translator, seems all the more engaging. For his part, Sosnowski searches Bishop’s poetry for categories akin to the admired poetics of John Ashbery (and also to his own), pointing at her specific phonostylistics and ungraspable flow of meanings. The text is complemented by analyses and interpretations of Bishop\u27s The Fish and At the Fishhouses in the original and Polish translations by Barańczak and Sosnowski
Frazeologizmy Wisławy Szymborskiej w przekładzie. Propozycja kategorii śladu frazeologicznego
The article introduces the concept of the phraseological trace – a tool for the study of modified and non-modified idioms (phraseologisms) in the poetic text and its translated version. It analyses Wisława Szymborska’s poems Census, Conversation with a stone and A speech at the lost-andfound, along with their translations into Spanish. The aim of the juxtaposition of the original text and its translations is to pinpoint the differences in conceptualization and determine their sources
Barańczak i Ulro
The article comprises sketches by Stanisław Barańczak and Konstanty Jeleński on Czesław Miłosz’s The Land of Ulro. By comparing these three texts, important features of the thought of each author are described. The main figure is, however, Stanisław Barańczak: his thoughts on religion and literature
Kolory poezji (Na przykładzie poezji lirycznej Konstantego Ildefonsa Gałczyńskiego)
The article presents the category of colour in modern Polish poetry, and based on an interpretation of Ewa Górecka’s book, Konstatnego Ildefonsa Gałczyńskiego gry barwą z wyobraźnią i kulturą [Colours as Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński’s Play with Imagination and Culture]. The colour palette in Gałczyński’s poetry includes golden, silver, green, blue, red and black. Culture was an inspiration for the poet, but he didn’t avoid entering into dialogue with it, establishing the meanings of colours in his writing. The colours present in Gałczyński’s lyric poetry also indicate the changes in his poetic language. The way in which the poet uses them in his early works differs from their use in those created after 1945
Modernizm jako konstytuujący się proces. Ironia modernistyczna na przykładzie modernizmu hiszpańskojęzycznego
The article deals with the presence of modernist irony, which is defined as a characteristic attitude to symbolism in Spanish modernism. This topic is an answer to dual understanding of the turn of the 19th and 20th century in Spanish literature (modernism, Generation ‘98), which is an expression of the excessive attachment to critical moments in analyzing the evolution of Spanish literature. The author shows the validity of the category proposed, analyzing the novels Sangre patricia by Díaz Rodríguez and Amor y pedagogía by Miguel de Unamuno, as well as referring to poetry and painting of the Spanish cultural area. She also points to the social conditioning of modernist irony. The presence of this category in Unamuno’s output challenges the traditional categorization of the historico-literary process of Spanish modernism
Nie Stanisława Barańczaka. Interpretacyjne powroty
This sketch shows the evolution in the way Stanisław Barańczak’s poem has been interpreted. Initially, these interpretations focused on the lyrical hero and role of the poetic word, revealing their roots in the Romantic tradition, and on the classic problems of romantic individualism, centered around the rights of the individual, the limits of freedom and rebellious consciousness. The author also shows how this text can be interpreted in terms of the absolute order of heroism expected of the lyrical addressee as an exchange of linguistic and somatic values. The article concludes by saying that this poem illustrates the universal idea of “intextuation” of the body (showing the legal relation to the body) presented by Michel de Certeau
„Wzruszenia wreszcie nie wmówione” – Barańczak afektywnie
The main aim of the article is an interpretation of Stanisław Barańczak’s poem Przywracanie porządku (Restoration of order), written in Cambridge, USA, between December 1981 and July 1982. This composition may be analysed as a specific closure of one stage of his literary output and the starting point of new forms of his creative work. Contemporary affect theory (as a multiplicity of forms and types) proves to be a useful methodology, which affords possibilities for new interpretations of Barańczak’s poetry
