Shadowing Technique; Teaching Listening Skill to ESOL Learners in University
The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of Shadowing Technique on students’ listening skills achievement. Therefore, the experimental research was applied and the technique on collecting the data was administrating pre- and post- tests to the experiment and control groups, which consisted of 40 students in each group. Then, t-test was employed on analyzing the data. As a result, there was a significant difference between the mean of experimental and control groups (F = 8.92, p=. 003 < .05). Therefore, there was a significant effect of applying shadowing technique on students’ listening skill achievements and the experimental group outperformed the control group. To sum up, the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected
News translation in the digital age: A case study of Vice.com
Translation-mediated events get circulated globally through the media. This paper focuses on studying how events in, about, and pertaining Indonesia in general are presented to the foreign audience through translation. To that end, this paper employs descriptive product-oriented approach and translation transformation strategies adapted from those proposed by translation scholars. The data were collected from an online media, VICE Indonesia, and were limited to Indonesian source texts and their English target texts published in November 2018. Following initial data collection, 10 pairs of target and source texts were compiled for comparative analysis. Data analysis revealed that adaptation and re-contextualization of target texts occurred. They are found most prominently in the title and lead sections, although an analysis on the articles’ content also show that the target texts’ contents also experience similar changes. Among these changes, the most noticeable are recomposition of paragraphs, omission and substitution or paragraphs, and different choice of source of quote. Ultimately, although the target texts maintain to some degree of semblance to the source texts, new realities and perspectives emerge as the result of these translation strategies
The Use of Euphemism in Karonese Language Langkat
This research was conducted to identify the function of euphemism used in Karonese Laguage Langkat. This research applied qualitative descriptive approach. The qualitative data were taken from interview in karonese people at villange bahorok, langkat. The instrument for collecting the data through interview. The result of the analysis from interview the data taken from the respondents show that euphemism used in Karonese language divided in some categories such pronoun, adjective, verb, and noun. The use of Euphemism in Karonese language is not only for the words, but also in some phrases. In express the euphemism, karonese culture used Euphemism to communication. And the last one is karonese people usually use Euphemism to express the euphemism in situation or condition. The content of social values in the mourning tradition of karonese’s culture has function to motivate, advice, amuse, and strengthen the condolences family. And in educational function that can be as the reflection for the people about the importance of this tradition for readers especially young generation
Students Voices: A Qualitative Study On Teachers’ Written Feedback Among Fourth Year University Students
The objectives of this study is to find student’s voices on teachers’ written feedback. The qualitative study investigates the student’s voices on teachers’ written feedback of their essays and comments that benefit students’ future improvement as writers. It explores sixty-one English Department students’ opinions on the written feedback of their writing teachers at Ar-Raniry State University of Islamic Studies, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The findings indicate that writing teachers provide various kinds of feedback on students’ essays and they valued positive teachers’ feedback on all aspects of writing such as grammar, mechanics, content and organisation. Teachers’ negative comments were also considered useful for students’ learning because they can help students to improve their critical thinking and writing skills. In addition, for student future improvement, teachers’ feedbacks do contribute to learning and that teachers’ feedback on grammar and organisation are more preferable than those on content and mechanics. It is suggested that feedback which highlights strengths and weaknesses of students’ work can facilitate students to learn and make better future learning
The Implementation of Social Media to Develop Students’ Writing Skill on Digital Marketing
Digital marketing has become a new way to exchange things, starting from information to selling things. UniversitasNegeri Medan (UNIMED) as one of the educational university tries to engage to this digital world. Since the currentfacility of multimedia laboratorybased on Computer Assisted Language learning (CALL), the implementation of e-learning has been developed. Through English for Spesific Purposes (ESP), the students learn further on e-world. The aim of this research is to find out the students’ ability in writing an advertisement using social media. This research used a development research approach (R & D) that adopts a model developed by Borg & Gall and the questionnares were analyzed by Linkert Scale formula. The research activities wasin the second semester consist of 30 english literature students carried out pre- and post-test, expert validation, and final product. The result shown: 1) social media like Instagram can be developed as the writing material; 2) students’ ability in writing using social media can be implemented in e-marketing to design an advertisement. Furthermore, it’s suggested to do more research on digital marketing to offer a wider opportunies to students in deciding the best job in the future
Enhancing the EFL Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text through Think-Pair-Share
The purpose of tis study was to investigate English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ achievement in writing skill (descriptive text) through Think Pair Share method. Therefore, the action research design was implemented to match with the purpose of the study. The techniques of collecting the data were writing test, observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study shows that the students’ achievement sustainably improved from the first evaluation, which was 65,50 to second evaluation, which was 75,09 and to the third evaluation, which was 85,50. The score continuously improved from the first evaluation to the third evaluation. Observation result shows that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method. Questionnaire and interview report shows that students agreed that the application of TPS (Think Pair Share) method had helped them in writing descriptive text. Understanding Interpreting Strategies: Case Study in Consecutive Interpreting in Jokowi and Malcolm Turnbull Press Conference
The most important duty of a translator and an interpreter is to deliver the message from the SL to TL. Differs from a translator, an interpreter works in a limited time span and will rely on the knowledge and vocabulary he/she knows beforehand in order to deliver the meaning of the speech. Therefore, an interpreter should implement various forms of interpreting techniques, as stated by Li (2015) that strategies are tools for interpreters to overcome challenges in interpreting. The research material of this paper is the President of Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo and Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Malcolm Turnbull Press Conference on February 2017. The press conference was done by consecutive interpreting. This study is conducted in qualitative approach by Hale and Napier (2013) to show the concept and characteristic of the strategies used in the interpretation and to analyze process and product of interpreting. As result it is found that both of interpreters applied strategy to enhance their understanding of the message and to overcome of the difficulty of the speech and the short time span. Students’ Perspective on English Pragmatic Based Material for Students of Hotel Management Study Program
Understanding someone’s utterances who has different cultural background with the listener certainly should be intended. Lot of miscommunications occurred between speakers and listeners, in case that the listener does not get the core intent meaning of the speaker. Specifically, what has been conveyed implies indirect meaning. Thus, Understanding pragmatic is very important. Rahman (2017) has created a book with pragmatic approachment. Rahman (2017) carries various daily hotel conversations that convey pragmatic meaning. Then, the book has been taught to the students as well. Thus, this study is aimed to investigate the students’ perspective on that book implementation. A Survey was used to collect the data by using questionnaire and interview. 40 students of hotel management were involved in this study. The research reveals that 33 respondents (82.5%) strongly agree that the book is contextual with their daily work and practice. It is also revealed the fact that 34 respondents (85%) said the book represents their hard skill levels. Yet, the book also motivates students to learn by seeing the data that 31 (78.5%) students informed that they are curious to learn the book by practice
Improving Senior High School Students’ Ability in Speaking Using “Everyone is A Teacher Here Strategyâ€
This research was Classroom Action Research, aimed to improve the students’ ability in speaking by using everyone is a teacher here strategy. The sample of this study was XI-IPA, which consisted of 14 students of SMA Free Methodist Medan. This research was done in two cycles. Each cycle was consisted of four steps, namely, planning, action, observing, and reflecting. The data of this study were obtained by using a test, interview sheet and observation sheet. Based on the analysis, it was found that there was an improvement on the students’ ability in speaking from each cycle. It was showed from the mean of pre-test, which was 57,5. In the first cycle, there was an improvement of the result of the students’ mean, which was 68,4 and for the second cycle there was an increasing of the students’ mean which was 79,1. Moreover, in pre-test session there was 21% (3 students) who got point of ≥ 70. In post-test for cycle I, there was 50% (7 students) who got point of ≥ 70. In post-test for cycle II, there was 78% (11 students) who got point of ≥ 70. So, the total percentage of the students’ increasing from the pre-test to the post-test cycle II was 49%. And it indicates that the using everyone is a teacher here strategy can improve the students’ ability in speaking
Realia as a Media to Improve the EFL Learners’ Achievements in Descriptive Writing
This study was aimed at investigating the improvement of EFL learners’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph in Indonesia. Therefore, the moethodology conducted in this study was action research. The techniques of collecting data were documentation (writing test) and questionnaire for quantitative data, and observation and interview for the qualitative data. The result shows that the score mean of EFL learners was improved from cycle 1 to cycle 2 which was 66.28 to 87.00 respectively. Furthermore, the result of questionnaire shows that most of EFL learners were very interested and enjoying learning writing by using realia. Moreover, from the observation and interview, EFL learners said that realia is very good and enjoyable to improve their achievements in descriptive writing. Therefore, relia should be implemented to teach English in Indonesia not only to teaching writing but also to teach other skills such as listening, speaking and readin
