Developing English Writing Materials in Narrative Text Based on Genre-Based Approach
Get PDFThis study aims to develop appropriate English writing materials by using Genre-Based Approach. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising and final product. It was conducted at SMA Negeri 14 Medan for grade XI, consisting of 32 students. Instrument for collecting data was document, questionnaire and interview. Based on the data, it found some writing material, which has inappropriate instruction related to writing a text that should be developed based on syllabus and students’ needs. In analyzing students’ needs, the questionnaire was distributed to 32 students and also conducting an interview to the teacher and students. Then, the researchers design the new materials that validated by experts. The results of validating show 91,6% from English lecturer and 80% from English teacher. It means the developing materials are categorized as “relevant†for the grade XI students at SMA Negeri 14 Medan
INTEGRATION OF CRITICAL LITERACY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AS A MEANS OF ENHANCING NATIONAL INTEGRATION IN THE SOCIAL CONTEXT OF INDONESIA
Get PDFDisintegration is now internally threatening Indonesia. It is assumed that the problem is caused by cultural misunderstanding. The cultural misunderstanding has resulted in intolerance and radicalism of group ideology. For years Indonesia with its 250 million populations has been peacefully living together with Pancasila ideology in which unity in cultural diversities is highly appreciated and respected. The root of problem lies in the practice of education and obviously the best solution is through education. One of the solutions to the problem is by integrating critical literacy principles in the field of Englsih language learning. Principles of critical multicultural and global literacy can be integrated in English language learning. Theory of systemic functional linguistic (SFL) is in line with and contributes to the principles of critical literacy. This paper combines principles of critical literacy and those of SFL in developing language learning materials. It is expected that by integration of critical literacy principles and those of SFL in the practice of English language education, Indonesia can avoid disruptions of national disinttegration and regain national unity in harmony
Metaphor In English Version Of Sura Ali Imran
Get PDFThis paper intends to analyze one of them Sura in Al-Qur’an. This study was conducted in Sura Ali Imran. The source of the data was taken from the translation of Sura Ali Imran. They were contained in the verses of Sura Ali Imran, and then analyzed the kinds, functions, and the reasons of using metaphor. The kinds are refers to Lakoff and Johnson that divided the metaphor are arranged in order according to which of Halliday’s three metafunctions. Then, the reason is based on Wahab’s four contextual reasons. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are two kinds of metaphor used in Sura Ali Imran, 5 verses of explicit metaphor and 10 verses of implicit metaphor. The second finding is there are 9 functions used from 13 functions as the breakdown of Halliday’s three metafunction. The next finding found that the reason why the metaphor is used in Sura Ali Imran are because of four contextual reasons. Therefore, it can be concluded that, some messages of the Al-Qur’an in Sura Ali Imran have a stressing point which is delivered in more beautiful words in implicit metaphor that make the readers have a deeply understanding toward the message

Readability formulas have been broadly used in determining text difficulty based on learners’ grade level. Based on mathematical calculations, a readability formula examines certain features of a text in order to provide best rough approximations as an indication of difficulty. Peer Feedback in Reviewing Essay
Get PDFPeer feedback is the comment or advice from equal partner, which can help the writer to improve their product of the writing. The aim of this study was to find out the types of peer feedback most frequently given by students in reviewing their classmates’ essay. The total participants of this study were 178 students of English education department. The data of this study was taken from peer feedback given by students in reviewing essay, which applied in the class of writing. The design of this study was descriptive quantitative. The peer feedback given by students in reviewing their classmates’ essay was analyzed and categorized based on Hyland and Hyland’s classification: praise, criticism, and suggestion. As the result, suggestion was most frequently given by students in reviewing essay because most of the students gave constructive comment or asking the improvement as their feedback rather than gave praise and criticism. It was seen that the total suggestion which given by students to the classmates was 208 feedback. Then, 108 praise was given which expressed the positive comments or positive impression, though there is some empty praise without constructive comments. 107 criticisms were also given by students in expressing their negative comment or dissatisfaction with the essay written by their classmates. In addition, some combinations of the feedback were also given in reviewing essay. There are 30 combinations of praise and criticism, 51 combinations of praise and suggestion, and 25 combinations of criticism and suggestion. In conclusion, the reviewers expressed positive and negative comments, positive and constructive comments, the negative and constructive comments in same time
An Investigation of Mother Tongue Influence on EFL Learners during their Speaking Performance
Get PDFThis study aimed at investigating the mother tongue influence of Acehnese learners in vocational English class. The students’ mother tongue influence can be detected by the results of speaking errors on their performance. The primary data of the students’ speaking performance was recorded, then transcribed. Furthermore, the student’s questionnaire was applied to support the primary data. The results of this study were analyzed and presented into two parts containing pronunciation and grammar errors. Meanwhile, the data obtained from the questionnaire was quantitatively shown that the learning process of the target language was affected by the first language
The Students’ Ability in Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text
Get PDFReading skill plays an important role in English learning process, especially when student have to deal with TOEFL Exam which includes reading and writing skill. The writer observed that the process of comprehending a reading text was still a serious problem for the students. The writer applied a qualitative method in this research with descriptive approach. The subject of the study was the first semester students class E of Universitas Prima Indonesia Medan. The instrument of data collecting was multiple choice test. The mean score of the students’ in comprehending narrative text was 77. It shown that their comprehension narrative text was average to good. There was 12 students (48%) was classified as Excellent, 12 students (48%) was classified as Good and there was 1 students (4%) was classified as Average whereas no student (0%) was classified as poor to comprehending narrative text. Therefore, the writer hopes that the other English lecturer should always try to create an interesting text and media for their teaching
Theme Markedness in EFL Students’ Recount Texts: A Systemic Functional Analysis
Get PDFThis study is aimed to discover the types and the dominant type of theme markedness in EFL students’ recount texts based on the theory of systemic functional linguistics. Qualitative content analysis approach was utilized in this study. Writing sheets were utilized as the instruments of collecting the data. The data were in the form of clauses taken from 33 recount texts written by second-year students of English literature department of University of Sumatera Utara. Based on the analysis, it was discovered that there were 1144 clauses in the data. Then, in terms of theme markedness, marked theme (MT) had 213 occurrences (18.62%) and unmarked theme (UMT) had 931 occurrences (81.38%). The conclusion can be drawn that there were 2 types of markedness namely marked theme (MT) and unmarked theme (UMT), and the dominant type of theme markedness was unmarked theme (UMT). Politeness Strategies and Gender Differences in the Speech Act of Rejection among the Malays in Malaysia

Making rejection falls as one of the functions through which gender differences in the language may be identified. Research seems to suggest that men and women construct and incorporate politeness differently while performing speech acts of rejection. Therefore, this study aims to identify the positive and the negative politeness strategies that both genders use in making a rejection and also to compare, to what extent politeness strategies of males differ from those of females in making rejection. This study employs the framework of Brown and Levinson’s Model of Politeness (1987) where it is realised through a set of questionnaire involving nine different situations and is formulated based on an oral Discourse Completion Task. The oral DCT is tested on 50 male and 50 female students of International Islamic University Malaysia. As a whole, males use more positive and negative politeness strategies than females when making rejections. While in a broader context, both genders are generally explanative and apologetic when making rejections. Therefore, this study is able to suggest better ways for society members in the future on how to make appropriate rejections to each other
