    Maintenance of Hokkien Language by Its Speakers in Medan

    Indonesia is famous for various culture that attracts many tourists from several part of the world to have a visit. Besides having numerous culture, Indonesia is flourished with different ethnics, too, such as the Javanese, the Bataknese, the Indian and the Chinese. Every ethnic speak with different language, but formally the national language is Indonesian language. In this study, the researcher, who derives from Chinese ethnic and resides in Medan, has taken interest in preserving her mother tongue which is Hokkien language. Hokkien language is an informal language which is used by the Hokkien speakers to communicate with one another. In maintaining language, the researcher focuses on the phenomena that happens lately, the researcher feels that Hokkien language is not important for some of the young family in Medan, they teach their children the other language that develops immensely throughout people life. Even though some still maintain Hokkien language, the researcher feels that children do not put any interest in speaking their mother tongue. This will give negative impact to the language existence. The problem in this study is concerned with factors influencing the preservation of Hokkien language. The presentation of the data described in qualitative descriptive method and this study conducted through field survey with interviews and observation. The findings revealed that there are two kinds of language maintenance between young speakers and old speakers. The former has lesser effort in maintaining the language, while the latter has stronger effort. Despite the difference, all of Hokkien speakers still make use of the language in their daily activities. Other factors are the language status of Hokkien language as the mother tongue as well as the identity of Hokkien ethnic, the pride of the culture, and the solidary among Hokkien speakers

    Developing Digital Rubrics of Six Tasks of KKNI IR 4.0-Based For TEFL Subject

    This study is aimed at developing rubrics of six tasks of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) the subject of the KKNI Industrial Revolution 4.0-based of an English Education Study Program at UNIMED. The objectives of this research are to analyze the rubrics of TEFL subject used at the 3rd semester of English Education Study Program and develop the appropriate KKNI rubrics based on the students’ needs. This study is mainly focused on developing Critical Book Report, Critical Journal Report, Engineering Ideas, Mini Research, and Projects rubrics. Research and Development applied in this research and the results show that the rubrics used in the 3rd semester at English Education Study Program is developed through implementing the simplification of R&D. The rubrics indicated low competency for the students after analyzing the questionnaires given. New rubrics are designed to answer the needs of the students. Generally, the existing TEFL rubrics are less relevant for the needs of 3rd semester students. In terms of descriptor rubrics, they are not suitable with the needs of the Lesson Plan and the tasks of TEFL rubrics needed by the students are irrelevant for their needs where the topics or contents used in the course book are useful in the learning outcome of this subject

    Language Attitude of Indonesian Workers in Cruise Ship Holland America Line

    The term of language attitude is the feeling how people can respond to another language. This research explored the language attitude of Indonesian workers in Cruise Ship Holland America Line (HAL). It was aimed to investigate the characteristic of language attitude by Indonesian workers’ especially in food and beverage department. The research use theory from Garvin and Mathiot (1968) there have three characteristics of language attitudes, language loyalty, pride of language, awareness of the language norm. This research conducted with descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study are the utterances of Indonesian workers in Cruise Ship Holland America Line (HAL). The source of data of this study was ten Indonesian workers at the food and beverage department. Interview was used to obtain the data. The result found that from ten participants, eight Indonesian workers showed negative language attitudes. The others have positive toward the Indonesian language. Realization of positive language attitudes influenced by friendship and place domain. Meanwhile, there were loyal to the Indonesian language by an informal situation to avoid negative thinking and respect each other among workers

    Students\u27 Translation Use in English Foreign Language (EFL) Learning

    The study was conducted to describe the students’ translation use in English Foreign Language Learning (EFL). The subject of the study was 100 students English Educational Study Program Languages and Arts Faculty, Universitas Negeri Medan. 40 Students were selected as the sample. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire and interview. The data analysis indicated that English Department Students as foreign language learners used translation activities during their learning process such as, to comprehend reading text, to write English texts, to speak English, to understand vocabularies, to understand English grammar, to understand idioms and phrases and to understand the instructions of teachers.  More attention should be given than to help the students’ skills and understanding through the translation process

    Increasing Students’ Motivation in Writing through Diving and Climbing Strategy

    This research aimed to find the effect of teaching strategy on the students’ motivation in writing and the students’ problems during the strategy implementation. Climbing and Diving was the strategy that was applied in this research. The design of the research is experimental. The first year students were taken as the population of the research. They are the Intensive language learning programme students in IAIN Padangsidimpuan. Questionnaire and interview were used to get the data. Likert scale was used in the questionnaire to score the students’ responses. From the calculation using t-test, the t value = 0.756 is the t table α = 0.05. It means that the students’ motivation in writing is significantly affected by Climbing and Diving strategy. During the implementation of the strategy, the students faced two dominant problems. They are time limitation and no specific pattern. The short time offered by this strategy does not give the students more chances to write and because of no pattern makes students lose control in writing

    The Effect of Cooperative Learning and Thinking Ability toward Writing Skill of Exposition Paragraph

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Numbered Head Together (NHT) type and Cooperative Script (CS) type of cooperative learning (creative and critical thinking ability) toward the skill of writing exposition paragraph to the second-semester students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, University of Cokroaminoto. This study employed the quantitative research approach of the experimental method with a 2x2 factorial design. The test results of the exposition paragraph writing and the thinking ability were analyzed by using a two-way ANOVA design with 0.05 of the significance level. The sample of this study used the multi-stage random sampling technique for 68 students. The result of this research found that students could have high scores in writing exposition paragraphs if teachers employed the cooperative learning model of NHT type so that they could possess the critical thinking ability. The students who had high critical thinking skills got better scores in writing. Conversely, the students who had low critical thinking skills got lower scores in writing

    Localizing the “New Snapshot†Textbook; A Study for Intermediate Level Students in Indonesia

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the “Snapshot†textbook based on the local characteristics of Indonesian intermediate students. Therefore, the descriptive analysis method was applied to this study by using documentation and observation techniques. As a result, five elements need to be adapted based on the local characteristics of Indonesian students: 1) sociocultural content, 2) language level, 3) authenticity 4) instruction method, and 5) tests & exercises. Adapting the textbook-based local characteristics of students is not simple but it is important to achieve the learning objectives successfully

    Requesting and Refusing Politeness Expression Teacher’s Instruction in Teaching Learning Process

    This research conducted to describe the request and refusal polite expression when teacher instruct students. The writer has chosen English teacher and the object is 1 teacher. The writer joins in the class and records the activities when teachers teach students. The data analyzed by using qualitative method. The types of politeness are based on the Brown and Levinson’s theory about politeness strategy that should people use when they instruct others. There are 24 male students and 30 female students who are follow this research. The research instrument to collect the data is through observation the conversation during learning and teaching process. All the utterances relate to politeness strategy produced by the students and teacher write down and 2 conversations are chose to be analyzed based on politeness strategies The result of this research shows that there are three types of instructional activities; motivating students (1 expression), informing students of objective (1 expression), helping students recall prerequisites (1 expression), presenting information and example (1 expression) and providing practice and feedback (7 expressions). Teacher used four types of them, Bald on Record (4 expressions), Positive Politeness (16 expressions), Negative Politeness (6 expressions), and off- record (2 expressions). There are 3 expressions are polite requests and no impolite refusal. From that result, the writer concludes that teacher often to use Positive Politeness by reasoning that it types of politeness strategy is to make the relationship between teacher and students more intimate during teaching learning process. This research can lead other researcher to conduct research on Politeness strategy. It also can lead the teachers and the students to make a good interaction by applying the politeness strategy in the classroom so that they can maintain a good communication one anothe

    Multiculturalism Education for Refugees in Transit

    In non-formal classroom during their waiting time in transit, refugees often found it difficult to have dynamic teamwork with others from diverse sociocultural. Things considered small stuffs for some turned out to be a problematic issue to others. Their various background; home countries, ethnicities, previous socioeconomic status added to the exclusion and specific group connection with tendency of being unsettled when they were obligated to mix with their fellows outside their comfort group. Even though most of these people have experienced in moving around from one country into another, their marginal life was not a much of help to their socialization with people outside of their community. Promoting multicultural education which values diversity and includes the perspectives of a variety of cultural groups on a regular basis took longer time to decrease prejudice, tolerate changing habits and eliminate gender bias

    L1 Cognitive Skills Transfer in the Process of Learning L2 of Dependent Scripts

    Language transfer is one of the important areas in second language acquisition research. This study aims to describe the process of transfer L1, Bahasa Indonesia, cognitive skills to L2, English, cognitive skills of dependent scripts. Cognitive skills are the skills that support decoding, such as rapid automatized naming (RAN) and working memory (WM). This research was conducted with descriptive qualitative research design, with case study.  The subjects of the study were 15 students who speak Bahasa as the first language (L1) and learn English as the second language (L2). Bahasa and English are the language which have the same scripts, dependent scripts. The subjects were given the rapid automatized naming (RAN) test and working memory (WM) test. The data of this study was analyzed with two data analysis techniques, they were non-parametric statistics and qualitative data analysis. The finding of this study was that there was no significantly transfer of cognitive skills from L1, Bahasa, to L2, English. It can be seen from the process of transfer RAN and WM as the subskills, that most of the students made different errors both in L1 and L2 RAN and WM, and they have different levels of achievement in L1 and L2 cognitive skills
