    Mechanism of Valence Change in Mandailing Language: Linguistics Typology

    This paper described the mechanism of valence change in Mandailing language. The concept of valence refers to the number of arguments a verb that serves as a predicate in a clause can present. Changing the valence of verbs in Mandailing through a causative process causes the verbs to experience an increase in valence. This study was included a qualitative descriptive study, in which the method is a study of language typology and the data analyzed based on the problems discussed using the method Agih. The results of the data analysis of this study are presented using an informal method in the form of explanation or exposure using ordinary words or verbal language. The determinants used by this method are the language elements in the Mandailing language. The purpose of this study was to find what types of verbs in the Mandailing language can experience changes in valence, symptoms, and their process of change, and the semantic role of these verbs. The data analysis from this study was obtained through the observation method and the proficient method with informants; based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that changes in the valence of the Mandailing language occur mainly in intransitive, transitive, transitive verbs, which are grouped into symptoms that cause valence reduction and valence expansion. This study is also expected to inspire some researchers interested in the mechanism of valence change in Mandailing language, either micro or macro

    The Access to and Use of ICT in Learning English: A Case of University Students

    This research aimed to find out the students’ access to ICT application and how far ICT application helps students in mastering English language skills faced by English students of English Education Study Program at the University of Bengkulu in the 2020/2021 academic year. This research was an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. The population of this research was English students of English Education Study Program at the University of Bengkulu. The sample of this research was selected by using purposive sampling technique, totaling 80 students for questionnaire and 24 students for interview. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. The instruments were consisted of 15 items adapted from Dang Hoang Tri and Nhung Hong Thi Nguyen (2014). This research used Microsoft Excel to analyze the data.  The result of this study showed that students access 15 ICT applications in English learning. Also, researcher found that the majority of students have positive perception towards ICT application can help students in mastering English language skills

    Online-based Rubric for Peer Assessment: Effectiveness and Implications

    This study investigates using technology to promote authentic and meaningful learning in applying a peer assessment rubric for a public speaking assessment in a higher education institution in Brunei Darussalam. Three hundred six undergraduates from Universiti Teknologi Brunei\u27s Schools of Business, Computing, and the Engineering Faculty conducted the assessments in real-time using online-based rubrics accessible via their smartphones or laptops. Comparisons were made between the lecturers\u27 marks and students for each rubric criterion, and a set of questionnaires was distributed to investigate students\u27 perceptions toward the peer assessment after the assessment. The results indicated a variable discrepancy between assessments by the lecturers and students for the rubric criteria. While in some disciplines, peer marking was found to overmark compared to the lecturer by more than 15%, in other cases, the marks were similar. Comparison between peer and lecturer assessment indicated that the level of agreement was sensitive to the lecturer, but less so between student cohort when assessed by the same lecturer. When differences were observed, there was no apparent discrepancy in an agreement between aspects of the rubric which evaluated content or delivery. Students’ feedback revealed a positive response towards peer assessment but highlighted issues surrounding the technological aspects of the implementation process

    Needs Analysis of English Materials for Islamic Economics Students

    This study aims to find out the needs of English material for Islamic economics students. The method employed in this research is descriptive. Forty students and ten stakeholders were asked to complete the questionnaire, and ten stakeholders were interviewed. The result of the research: 1) the highest themes or topics needed based on students\u27 perception is the relevance of Islamic economics, meanwhile based stakeholders\u27 perception is the methodology of Islamic economics; 2) the highest discourse texts needed based on students\u27 perception is Islam as a way of life, whereas based on stakeholders\u27 perception is facts and theories of Islamic economics; and 3) the highest English Skills needed to be based on students and stakeholders\u27 perception is speaking skill. In sum, the researchers concluded that speaking is an important skill needed by the Islamic economics study program of the Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu

    Online Learning of Foreign Language Program in the Intensive Learning Class at the IAIN Padangsidimpuan Language Development Center

    Pandemic learning forcibly moved from face-to-face learning into online learning. It makes teachers and learning transformation students IAIN Language Development Center Padangsidimpuan get a new challenge, they must master the teaching materials and teaching strategies as well as the need to master Technology internet-based learning. This study was carried on to find out how language learning Arabic online and challenges in learning the language at the Center for Language Development IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The research method applied a qualitative descriptive study. Participants were comprised of 178 students and lecturers at IAIN Padangsidimpuan Language Development Center academic year 2019/2020. Research instruments used were questionnaires, and documents from online learning screenshots. Analysis of this study employed the technique of presenting data in a narrative that resulted in the conclusion of the study. The results of this research indicated that the applications used in language teaching at the Center for Development Language were google classroom and WhatsApp. Barriers to learning are inadequate internet networks in a student residence. The biggest challenge of online learning is the lecturer and the students did not concentrate. Moreover, smartphones used in learning provided adverse effects on eye health and lack of interest in language learning. Lack of evaluation of learning and also lack time management that has been specified. A decrease in student achievement on speaking skill due to no reciprocal process orally in the learning process of faculty to students. There is a need for a new strategy at the Center for Language Development IAIN Padangsidimpuan so that learning objectives can be achieved. Lastly, the most important thing is that the preparation of digital facilities and infrastructure in implementing online language learning

    Ideational Meaning of Traditional Wedding Ceremony Horja Haroan Boru Tapanuli Selatan

    This study was aimed at finding out the ideational meaning on traditional wedding ceremony Horja Haroan Boru Tapanuli Selatan (HHBTS) and to elaborate the reason for the use of verbal components from three side namely Mora, Kahanggi and Anak boru. The analysis of this studyused qualitative analysis, and the theory used was from M.A.K. Halliday (1985, 1994 and 2004). This study found that the language being used by three participants (Kahanggi, Mora and Anakboru) namely; Kahanggi is dominantly used material activities, Mora and anakboru are dominantly used Mental and behavioral activities. Moreover, these three participants shows their position while Kahanggi as the host of the ceremony, anakboru as the supporter who take the responsibility in preparing the stuff in every steps of ceremony, while mora has the power to give advice, suggestion, permission and rejection in that ceremon

    An Analysis of Pragmatic Presupposition in Maturity Episode on Golden Ways Show

    Pragmatics is concerned with the study of meaning as communicated by speaker or writer and interpreted by a listener or a reader. It has consequently more to do with the analysis of what people mean by their utterances. Describing the types of presupposition by the utterances in a talk show named Golden Ways is the objective of this research. The subject of this research is a talk show entitled maturity. The data are some utterances said by the speaker and heard by the hearer. Utterances between the host and the audiences from this show can show the presupposition. The writer analyzed the types of presupposition by Yule’s theory (1996) to find out what types are often used in this talk show. The data analysis is conducted by classifying and categorizing the data to find the inferences. The writer uses a descriptive method because it describes the presupposition in the talk show and it was suitable to the purpose of the study. As Monsen stated (2008: 5) the descriptive research often illustrates a relevant but non quantified topic involving a well-focused research question. It generates narrative data that describe words instead of numbers. The writer has found all six types of presupposition which applied in this talk show. This research shows that presupposition always exist in utterances

    Interpersonal Meaning Analysis in the Tale’s Story of Sabai Nan Aluih

    Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a study of language which views language as two characteristics, systemic and functional. With using SFL, the researchers try to analyze the tale’s story of Sabai Nan Aluih. The research aim is to identify the interpersonal meaning realized in that story and to reveal the speech function of language use in that story. The research design of this analysis is descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the interpersonal meaning analysis of clauses as exchange in the tale of Sabai Nan Aluih. The data of this research is the clauses as exchange in the story of Sabai Nan Aluih. The source of data which is used in this research is the documentation of the data research paper. The researchers use document analysis from the story of Sabai Nan Aluih as collecting data. The data is analyzed by using description method. In the interpersonal analysis, declarative mood dominates almost the story, it is about 91 %. And, the data analysis of speech function is found in the story of Sabai Nan Aluih, statement, question and command, in where statement is domination from the story about 94%.     The objective of this research is to know more about  the complete description of Local Wisdom on the Use of the Minangkabu Proverb Meaning Satire by the Minangkabau Community in Medan. This research uses descriptive qualitative method which can be interpreted as a problem solving procedure that is investigated by describing the state of the object of research at the present time based on the facts that appear or as they are.The sample of this research limited  to 8 (eight) Minangkabau informants from the four Kotamatsum Kelurahan. After conducting this research, it was found that the use of the Minangkabau Proverb having meaningful satire by the Minangkabau Society in Medan was more dominant in the Social and Cultural context. This shows that the Minangkabau Society in social interaction with each other always uses a sentence that is decorated, especially the use of the proverbial Minangkabau meaning satire which aims at providing input, criticism and advice in accordance with religious aspects, customs and tradition which are held firmly by the Minangkabau community

    The Implementation of Field Trips as Edu-Tourism to Improve Students’ Speaking Ability at University Level

    Field trip programs as edu-tourism in university level were viewed as the great equalizer in terms of delivering students to cultural heritage awareness. So, they had seen these experiential learning as a central of educational mission. Higher level education especially university which implemented field trip programs as supporting activities in the English for tourism lesson was gladly endured the expense and disruption of providing field trips as the primary purpose to provide a learning opportunity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of educational field trips as edu-tourism at university level. This is a qualitative study which is carried out by survey and observation. The population of this study is the English Department students of Potensi Utama University. There were 150 respondents in this research which included of 50 teachers and 100 students were randomly selected. The instrument of this study used questionnaires and speaking test items. The questionnaire consisted of 30 items. The collection of in this research were analysed by using simple percentage method. The place for field trip activity was held in the ecotourism of Bukit Lawang, which located at Bahorok sub-district, Langkat Regency, North Sumatera, Indonesia. The result of this study hoped that educational field trips are helpful to cope up with advance learning to develop students’ interest especially speaking ability
