    Production of Energy from Water Flow Output in Fish Tank

    Nowadays, the world is confronting the increasing energy demand, reduction of emissions and security of energy supply. The high energy demand leads to a severe problem, and we need to reduce the usage of non-renewable energy to avoid adverse climate change. Thus, renewable energy is an important role obtained from the natural environment and can be replenished naturally from those sources without environmental degradation. Water energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources today, especially in the aquaculture industry. Hydropower played a vital role in producing large scale power and electricity. This study was set up to determine the electrical energy output depending on the different sizes and shapes of tanks. It is also to measure the water flow rate based on different size and shape tanks. Besides, the Pelton type of water turbine generator micro-hydroelectric DC 12V output was used in this experiment. Two types of tanks (rectangular and circular) with three different sizes (0.5 ton, 1.0 ton and 2.0 ton) were tested to measure high value of output energy (V) and flow rate (m3/s) by using clear water and wastewater. The result significantly shows that the circular tank had a higher water flow rate and output energy than the rectangular tank due to higher gravitational force, where the outlet placed in the middle and edge of the tank, respectively. The finding of this study benefits the aquaculture industry, where it introduced an alternative and cheaper method of reusing wastewater, reducing the cost maintenances and enhancing the profit of the business

    POPULATION GENETICS OF LONGTAIL TUNA (Thunnus tonggol) (BLEEKER, 1851) FROM EAST MALAYSIA BASED ON MITOCHONDRIAL DNA D-LOOP MARKER

    Present study investigates the genetic diversity and genetic distribution of the longtail tuna Thunnus tonggol collected from east Malaysia (Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak) based on mitochondrial DNA D-loop sequence analysis. 58 fish samples were obtained, specifically from Kota Kinabalu, KK (n = 22), Miri, MR (n=20) and Bintulu, BT (n = 17). DNA template was isolated using the salt extraction method. Final length of 404 base pair (bp) D-loop sequences revealed 52 haplotypes that comprise of 77 variable sites (38 of parsimony informative and 39 singleton). A total of 20 haplotypes were found in KK, 19 haplotypes in MR and 16 haplotypes in BT. Molecular diversity indices revealed high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity in all populations; KK (h = 0.9913 ± 0.0165, π = 0.00239 ± 0.0127), MR (h = 0.9942 ± 0.0193, π = 0.0226 ± 0.0121) and BT (h = 0.9926 ± 0.0230, π = 0.0196 ± 0.0171). Population comparison pairwise FST show that KK and BT were significantly genetically differentiated. The result from this study will be beneficial for fisheries management and also to provide information on the population genetics of T. tonggol in East Malaysian waters

    VESSEL LIFE JACKET COMPATIBILITY MOBILE APPS FOR SAFETY ASSESSMENT

    Life jacket is one of the safety appliances that can be found on the ship that provide buoyancy and prevention against drowning. Before the ship can sail, every element of safety of the vessel should be confirmed. Despite the establishment of standards for life jacket, both local and international, there have been cases of drowning associated with the usage of life jackets by the passengers of passenger boat/vessels for open-deck situation. Moreover, deficiency of information on safety instruction is reason the passengers are lack of personal safety information during on board. Thus, the evaluation on safety standard of life jackets and passenger vessel are vital for assessing the provision of the life jacket on board passenger vessel with respect to compatibility between life jacket and passenger vessel. In this paper, A Vessel Life Jacket Compatibility Mobile Apps (VELIT) was developed using software development methodology called Rational Unified Process (RUP) to automate the safety assessment process based on model called LCI (Life Jacket Compatibility Index). VELIT apps synchronized the safety assessment aspect and which allow user to compute the element in the model and produce the result of the safety assessment in real time. The VELIT apps are expected to be used in maritime area especially for ship safety assessment process

    TEKANAN KERJA DAN KOS KESIHATAN MEMPENGARUHI KEBAHAGIAAN STAF UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA TERENGGANU

    Kebahagiaan adalah rasa kesejahteraan, kegembiraan atau kepuasan yang boleh membawa kepada satu bentuk emosi yang positif dalam diri seseorang pekerja. Namun kebahagiaan akan merosot akibat daripada tekanan kerja dan masalah yang berkaitan dengan kesihatan. Kebanyakan pekerja tidak menyedari akan bahaya tekanan kerja yang pada akhirnya akan mengakibatkan kemerosotan kesihatan. Kajian ini dijalankan adalah bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti status kebahagiaan dan tekanan yang dihadapi oleh staf Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) serta mengukur kos kesihatan yang terpaksa ditanggung oleh mereka. Seramai 100 orang staf UMT, di mana 50 orang staf daripada bahagian akademik dan 50 orang staf daripada bukan akademik telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Satu set soal selidik digunakan sebagai instrumen kajian. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian SPSS versi 20.0. Secara keseluruhannya, dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara faktor tekanan kerja dan kebahagiaan. Majoriti staf UMT menyatakan bahawa mereka bahagia ketika berada di tempat kerja iaitu sebanyak 78 peratus. Jumlah kos langsung perbelanjaan kesihatan yang terpaksa ditanggung oleh responden adalah RM2,220, manakala jumlah kos tidak langsung pula adalah RM1,4376.41. Antara kes tertinggi yang dirujuk ke pusat rawatan adalah berkaitan dengan tekanan darah tinggi. Oleh itu, kesedaran dalam kalangan pekerja dari segi cara mengawal tekanan mereka adalah penting untuk mencapai kesihatan yang baik seterusnya merasa bahagia apabila membuat kerja

    Phytotoxic Activity of Geraniol-Treated Lemongrass Leaf Mulch against Common Weeds in Nurseries

    Hand weeding continues to be one of the most laborious aspects of nursery maintenance. Oxygenated monoterpene, an important group of secondary metabolite found in essential oils, has a potential herbicidal activity that could be exploited as natural herbicide whereas organic mulch could delay weed emergence. Thus, this study aimed to examine the phytotoxicity of geraniol, an oxygenated monoterpene compound, in combination with lemongrass leaf mulch against three common weeds, Eleusine indica (grass), Cyperus distans (sedge), and Tridax procumbens (broadleaf). Greenhouse experiments were carried out by treating 4.0 t/ha lemongrass leaf mulch with 7.5% (v/v) geraniol compound. The pretreated mulch acted synergistically and inhibited the emergence and shoot growth of T. procumbens completely. However, the pretreated mulch exhibited a moderate inhibitory effect on C. distans emergence and growth. Geraniol-treated lemongrass leaf mulch acted synergistically and inhibited the emergence of E. indica by 72%, but it acted antagonistically and caused a 45% reduction of shoot biomass. The present findings suggest that geraniol-treated lemongrass leaf mulch has potent herbicidal activity but its phytotoxic effect is species-dependent

    Solar Photocatalytic Efficiency of Zinc Oxide for Water Decontamination

    Solar photocatalysis is a green technology that takes advantage of sustainable solar energy for enhancing oxidation process of numerous harmful water contaminants. In this study, a custom solar driven zinc oxide (ZnO)-mediated photocatalytic system was developed and its efficiency to remove organic contaminants as well as to disinfect selected bacteria was investigated. Methylene blue (MB) dye was used as the model organic contaminant, while Escherichia coli (E.coli) was used as the model fecal coliform bacteria in contaminated water. A series of photodegradation experiments were conducted on water contaminated with either 10 mg/L of MB or ~1010 CFU/ml of E.coli. The experiments were completed under sunlight irradiation in the presence of 1 g/L of nano ZnO photocatalyst for up to 6 hours. Using a solar thermal collector, the photoreactor operated in the temperature range of 25 to 50 oC. The findings revealed that the combination of solar thermal with solar photocatalysis using ZnO intensified the degradation of MB and disinfection of E.coli. 98.08% of MB dye and 99.99% of E.coli were successfully removed from the water within the first 3 hours of treatment. Almost complete removal was eventually achieved after 6 hours of treatment. It is therefore suggested that ZnO-based solar photocatalytic system developed in this study is highly efficient at enhancing water decontamination process

    Removal of Eriochrome Black T DYE from Aqueous Solution by Nickel/Aluminium Layered Double Hydroxide

    Batik industry is well known in the East Coast of Malaysia, particularly in Terengganu and Kelantan. This industry consumes a lot of water for the batik making process which contributes to high discharge of wastewater containing excess dye pollutants. Hence, in this study, an anionic clay of nickel/aluminium-layered double hydroxide (NiAL) was investigated as a potential adsorbent for the removal of anionic dye of Eriochrome Black T (EBT). The NiAL was synthesized via self-assembly method and characterization of NiAL was carried out using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR). The composition and morphology of NiAL was further analyzed using carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur elemental analyzer (CHNS), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The potential of NiAL as an adsorbent for the removal of EBT in aqueous solution was tested at different dosages of NiAL. The adsorption ability was analyzed by using two common adsorption isotherms, which were Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption of EBT onto NiAL was governed by Freundlich isotherm model indicating that the adsorption occurs in heterogeneous system

    The Relationship between Anxiety and Depression with Quality of Life among the Elderly with Dementia Living: The Need of Reminiscene Group Therapy in Resident Institutions

    This study aims to identify the relationship between anxiety and depression with quality of life among the elderly with dementia living in institution. This study also propose reminscence group therapy in reducing depression and anxiety among residents in institutions. This cross sectional study was conducted at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras. A total of 58 elderly with mild to moderate demensia were selected through a series of screening process by a qualified clinical psychologist. Several instruments has been used including Quality of Life-AD (QoL-AD) Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) to investigate the relationship between anxiety and depression with quality of life among the elderly with dementia. This study shows that there is a negative relationship between the level of anxiety and quality of life among the elderly with dementia. Meanwhile, the relationship between depression and the quality of life of elderly with dementia in RSK Cheras shows that there is a significant relationship. The application of reminiscene group therapy as one of the effective intervention to improve quality of life and reduce anxiety and depression among the elderly with dementia in institution were discussed

    On Numerical Methods for Second-Order Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs): A Reduction To A System Of First-Order ODEs

    2nd-order ODEs can be found in many applications, e.g., motion of pendulum, vibrating springs, etc. We first convert the 2nd-order nonlinear ODEs to a system of 1st-order ODEs which is easier to deal with. Then, Adams-Bashforth (AB) methods are used to solve the resulting system of 1st-order ODE. AB methods are chosen since they are the explicit schemes and more efficient in terms of shorter computational time. However, the step size  is more restrictive since these methods are conditionally stable. We find two test cases (one test problem and one manufactured solution) to be used to validate the AB methods. The exact solution for both test cases are available for the error and convergence analysis later on. The implementation of 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-order AB methods are done using Octave. The error was computed to retrieve the order of convergence numerically and the CPU time was recorded to analyze their efficiency

    The Potential of Local Earthworms in Vermicomposting Goat Manure (GM) and Spent Coconut Flakes (SCF)

    Vermicomposting is a process that involves biological, chemical and physical transformations of solid organic materials such as agricultural residues of plant and animal through the use of microorganisms and earthworms. There are three main classes of earthworms, and only those from one class are usually used for vermicomposting. However, mostly foreign earthworms are used in the setup. Foreign earthworms are more expensive and harder to obtain than local earthworms. This makes the local farmers reluctant to try since they are expensive. The difference in vermicompost using two species of epigeic earthworms, a local earthworm and a foreign earthworm (Eisenia fetida), and normal compost without any earthworms was measured in this study. Both species of earthworms were placed in identical vermibeds consisting of partially composted goat manure and partially composted spent coconut flakes (SCF) with the ratio of 5:1 respectively in terms of weight. The vermibed moisture content was maintained at 60 – 70% throughout the whole process. The end products showed a difference from one another. The E. fetida showed a better result compared to the local earthworms in terms of the nutrient content presence and the adaptability of the earthworms during the whole process. However, the end product from the local earthworms was still better compared to the normal compost without any earthworms
