Exploring the Root Causes of the Persecution Policy Against Rohingya People: A Study based on Three Constitutions of Burma/Myanmar

    No full text
This article presents and analyzes the complex case of the Rohingya, a large group that allegedly migrated from the Bengal area and has been deprived of citizenship through the sociopolitical measures of the Myanmar government, thereby making them de facto stateless people in Myanmar. Through archival research investigating extensive historical records in Myanmar with a particular focus on the three constitutions of the country, this study attempted to identify and analyse the sociopolitical reasons and underlying sociocultural rationale for why Rohingya migrants are deprived of citizenship in Myanmar, treated as illegal immigrants, and subjected to criminal prosecution and oppression under Myanmar’s military rule. While violence against the Rohingya people should be condemned, the Buddhist nationalism of the majority of Myanmar citizens and the concern about territorial sovereignty of the Myanmar government must be well understood before effective tutelary measures can be contemplated for the Rohingya people

    No full text
Today, online teaching and learning is widely accepted in institutions of higher learning. Although there were various problems in the beginning, all parties were receptive to this learning approach after many improvements were made to ensure that students could follow the online teaching learning activities even during the lockdowns. The objective of the study was to identify the elements of communication strategy and politeness factors and describe the use of these elements during online learning. This study was conducted through observation and recorded sessions of Google Meet (chat room). The respondents of the study consisted of 35 students of various races who took a Malay language course (MPU3201 National Language A) for one semester at Multimedia University, Melaka campus. Data recordings were analysed according to the approach of Asmah Omar and Hymes where the use of language through direct communication strategies is often expressed in the form of statements and direct questions. In addition, communication strategies that mark politeness are examined based on the factors of adherence to social rules and factors in maintaining face. The results show the importance of selecting effective communication strategies even in a formal but friendly atmosphere during teaching and learning as this can build harmonious relationships. Therefore, it is highly recommended that instructors or lecturers use communication strategies, especially in the aspect of opening expressions and appropriate language behaviour expressions by emphasizing the politeness factor so that the formal teaching and learning sessions in a formal atmosphere is appealing to students.

Predictions of Netflix Binge-watching Behaviour among University Students during Movement Control Order

    No full text
Streaming media like Netflix has become a mainstream trend for people to have fun and relax during the Covid-19 pandemic, and numerous studies found that college students and millennials account for a large group who binge-watch television programmes. Hence, understanding university students’ motive for binge-watching is timely, especially during the Covid-19 lockdown period, when there is a lack of studies on this phenomenon. Thus, this study aims to examine the motives that influence Netflix binge-watching behaviour among university students. The study utilised the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) Theory, and three motives, namely ‘entertainment’, ‘social interaction’ and ‘escape’ were deduced from the theory. The study adopted a quantitative research approach using an online survey method. A total of 150 valid responses were collected through the purposive sampling technique, and the results were analysed using correlation and regression analysis. The findings through the Pearson’s correlations indicated that ‘entertainment’ has a positive and strong relationship with Netflix binge-watching behaviour, while ‘social interaction’ and ‘escape’ motives have a positive but moderately significant relationship with the binge-watching behaviour. Regression analysis further showed that only ‘entertainment’ and ‘social interaction’ were the predictors of binge-watching behaviour; however, ‘escape’ was not a predictor. This study also contributes to the U&G Theory as well as the literature on the youth’s media consumption, particularly during the Covid-19 lockdown period, for it benefits the parents, video streaming service providers and government in understanding the motives that influence binge-watching among youths; thus, strategies can be implemented to avoid excessive binge-watching behaviour during the lockdown which leads to negative social media outcomes

Emotion Recognition by Facial Expression and Voice: Review and Analysis

    No full text
Emotion is a scorching topic in the recent years due to the critical unseen stress incurred during the pandemic and post-pandemic. This is worsening with the recent economy’s inflation and increase of living cost, many employees are seriously affected and drawn forth many families saddened cases and tremendous drop of working performance. The increasing stress brings a lot of harm not only to the individual but to the company’s and country’s growth. To recognize emotion through a single model is less accurate, however, recruiting multiple-models may lead to latency in data processing and possibly misleading results if the input models data are not properly filtered and segmented. This paper will review, analyze and theoretically compare 15 facial expression methods and 17 voice methods of emotion recognition research works. It will outline the pros and cons of each method and discuss the accuracy of some of the standalone and hybrid emotion recognition methods. Some of the methods (such as CNN, KNN and SVM) can span over multiple-models, but reveal different level of strengths. This is very important to discover, so that one may replace or enhance the weaker level if applying the same method across the multiple-models. This paper will also illustrate different levels of popularity of the methods in each model for visual comparison in ease. Hopefully, it can cater the new researchers a quick identification on the most suitable method for recognizing the emotion through facial expression and/or voice

The presence of Covid-19 was a game-changer in all the sectors that traditional learning, working, selling even living methods have changed from basic methods to something else to curb Covid-19. The impact was huge on most sectors due to the lack of experience in overcoming pandemics. One of the sectors that face the most struggle was educational institutions. For many years, face-to-face learning and teaching method have been in practice. While during Covid-19, everyone was forced to attend online classes as a precautious measure. Online learning is completely based on digital study without the physical presence of students or lecturers. Implementing such learning approaches gradually in education allows students to expose to both learning methods. Many subjects such as languages, and theory-based topics have been taught with an online learning approach; however, less attention was paid to mathematics. Therefore, this study aimed to examine students’ experience in learning Discrete Mathematics online through LearnwithEmma.  LearnwithEmma is a learning platform that was designed for students in this study. During a month, students’ learning was assisted by an agent, Emma.  Students were given a questionnaire that involved questions about their experience and their current understanding of the subject. Students opined that their performance significantly improved after learning via LearnwithEmma.  About 77.2% strongly agreed that they excel in Mathematics after fully utilizing LearnwithEmma. Most of them agreed that they were able to perform better in their exam after using LearnwithEmma. 75.4% of the students agreed that they have scored better in their exams after using LearnwithEmma. 61.4% of the participants preferred to learn Discrete Mathematics through an online class compared to a traditional class. This study recommends that educators and researchers may enhance online learning by introducing new platforms such as LearnwithEmma or integrating other multimedia elements

COVID-19 is a threatening pandemic to human being worldwide. Many of frontliner being infected in many ways. Private protective equipment (PPE) is a must to wear by all the medical personal when handling the COVID or treating the contagious patients. In normal circumstances, PPEs are easily available from medical suppliers. However, it there is disease outbreak like this COVID-19 and worldwide are affected, face shields are in high demand. Traditional process may not be able to cope with the sudden surge of the demand as well as the raw material. Manpower and factory accessibility are other factors as most of the country practise social distance through restriction movement order or completely lock down the town. To overcome this problem, rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printing and laser cutting methods are the promising method in producing the medical shields for our medical frontliner in battling the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia. To keep this in mind that this effort should be an alternative or interim method while waiting for actual PPE to arrive. With this grant and contribution from various parties (NCWO/Faculty member), we have produced a total of 1834 pieces of 3D printed face shield. A Study on Formulation of Strain-Based Triangular Elements

    No full text
This paper presents formulation of triangular elements based on strain approach. Various formulations of the strain-based elements can be seen in the literature. However, most of them do not clearly describe selection of the suitable strain fields for the elements. Therefore, in this work, some guidance for the formulation of strain-based elements are provided based on simulation results that are obtained by using several polynomial functions from Pascal’s triangle. It is seen that higher order terms in the strain functions do not always guarantee better performance for the case considered in this work.
