Elderly and Smartphone Apps: Case Study with Lightweight MySejahtera
The outbreak of Covid-19 in the past 2 years has made the usage of contact-tracing app almost mandatory in Malaysia. Though the usage is seeming to be simple, but one interesting phenomenon can be observed in Malaysia is that most of the senior citizen are found not using smartphones regularly. While check-in through MySejahtera (the primary contract-tracing app used in Malaysia) for business, premises, and transports has made compulsory, it does bring a lot of inconveniences to the elderly. Many elderlies start to learn how to use smartphone and government has also taking initiative by providing free or low-cost smartphone with data plan. However, it is important to note that many apps are not customized for elderly navigation. Thus, we would like to study how does an app can be strip down so that the essential functions can be remained and keep minimal for elderly usage. The interface design, color, and button sizes are also important to consider. In this study, MySejahtera has been used as an example to strip down and tested its lightweight version among a group of elderly
A Cost-Based Dual ConvNet-Attention Transfer Learning Model for ECG Heartbeat Classification
The heart is a very crucial organ of the body. Concerted efforts are constantly put forward to provide adequate monitoring of the heart. A heart disorder is reported to cause a lot of hidden ailments resulting in numerous deaths. Early heart monitoring using an electrocardiogram (ECG) through the advancement of computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems is widely used. Meanwhile, the use of human reading of ECG results are faced with many challenges of inaccurate and unreliable interpretations. Over two decades, studies provided artificial intelligence (AI) technique using machine learning (ML) algorithms as a fast and reliable technique for ECG heartbeat classification. Moreover, in recent times, deep learning (DL) techniques have been focused on providing automatic feature extraction and better classification performance. On the other hand, the challenge with the ECG data is its imbalance nature. Therefore, this paper proposes a cost-based dual convolutional attention transfer DL model for ECG classification. The proposed model uses PhysionNet-MIT-BIH and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Diagnostics datasets. The first part uses the MIT-BIH for ECG categorization, while representations learned from the first classifier are used for PTB analysis through transfer learning (TL). The proposed model is evaluated and compared with well-performing conventional ML models based on their F1-score and accuracy scores. Our experimental finding show that the proposed model outperformed the well-performing ML models as well as competitive with past studies for both the classification and TL part, having obtained 98.45% for both F1-score and accuracy. The proposed model is applicable to real-life trials and experiments for ECG heartbeat and other similar domains
Development of Augmented Reality Based Applications for Brain Memory Training
This paper presents the development of augmented reality (AR) based brain memory training to improve the memorizing capability of the student. The AR visual memory training application is built on top of the mobile phone by utilizing the Unity and Vuforia platform. The developed visual memory test is a flipping card test that can measure a person’s memory capability to retain visual images and spatial perception in the mind. In this study, it is aimed to prove that AR technology is suitable to be employed in the education field. The results are justified based on the visual memory test score and the engaging level of the user computed from the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. The results are assessed by comparing with the physical mode and computer-based mode. As result, it is shown that the student performed better in the AR-based visual memory test compared to physical and computer-based modes. Besides, the EEG signals also show that students are more engaged and attentive while using AR technology. Thus, this research proves that AR technology implemented in the education field is able to uplift the learning experience and performance of the students. This research might contribute to the first step in revolutionize the traditional learning method in Malaysia education system.

Financial Reporting Quality and Control System: A Mixed Approach Assessment: DOI: https://doi.org/10.33093/ijomfa.2023.4.1.1
Listed firms have been reported by regulators to be tangled in financial scandals that have made the quality of their financial reports doubtful due to inadequate control systems of risk assessment, monitoring, information and communication, control environment and control activity. This study examines the relationship between financial reporting quality and the internal control system of listed firms in Nigeria. The research relieda hybridixed approach that sourced primary and secondary data using a bilateral convergent paralleled mixed design. The research method adopted is the interpretive post-action multiple case study that employs reduction and multiple regression as its data analysis techniques. Comparatively, results from both sources of data indicate that internal control system components are determinants of financial reporting quality. One of the implications of the findings on practice is that having financial and accounting experts on the board of directors that uses such expertise on risk assessment inhibits not achieving reporting quality. The study concludes that risk assessment improves financial reporting quality and recommends more such experts on the board of Nigerian firms
The impact of NYSE market index growth on investors’ trading volume
Investors’ behaviour tends to be affected by various factors, including the shift in the market index growth. Thus far, there is no concrete evidence that support the association between market index growth and trading volume growth. This study therefore tested the relationship between these two variables in a longitudinal study involving market data that covers a period of 20 years. The existing literatures have provided support that a significant, positive association exists between market index growth and trading volume in the NYSE market. The result, however, does not support this notion. Instead, the relationship between market index growth and trading volume was found to be significantly negative
Towards a Better Understanding of Social Acculturation: International Students in British EAP Universities
This study explores the role of social acculturation (social and cultural adaptation to university life in and outside the classroom) in a British EAP (English for Academic Purposes) classroom setting and to situate this within broader debates about the complex relationship between the concepts of language and culture. It argues that, with its overall focus on academic language and disciplinary acculturation, EAP pedagogic practices can overlook the dimension of social acculturation, which is also an equally important skill for students’ learning. For its theoretical framework, this paper presents a review of the literature that considers the significance of social acculturation and intercultural competence in the EAP curriculum. Drawing on this body of literature review as a methodology, this study proposes pedagogic practices such as Intercultural Approach and Sheltered Instruction that can be implemented in EAP seminar classes to develop international students' social acculturation. The seminar genre is suggested for students to practice the social acculturation process and hence improve their intercultural competence. This is because seminars provide an effective setting to prepare students for their new environment, allow them to interact with each other and practice their intercultural - as well as linguistic and disciplinary - skills
Workplace Preference Analytics Among Graduates
Graduates often find themselves difficult to secure a job after completing their education at universities or colleges. In this light, researchers have proposed various solutions to address this challenge. However, most of the work has largely focused on academic profile and personality traits; very few have highlighted the importance of workplace location characteristics. To address this challenge, this study has employed feature selection and machine learning approach to help graduates identify desired company type and sector based on their preferences and preferred location. The data used in this study was obtained from the Ministry of Higher Education Graduates Tracer Study's data, specifically for 2382 Multimedia University (MMU) students' employment situation upon graduating. Additional analytical datasets focusing on company and graduate locations were developed in order to extract further features relevant for this analysis. Feature selection was used to identify top-10 predictors that influence the selection of jobs in graduates' desired sectors. Various analytics methods such as Decision Tree Analysis, Random Forest Model selection, Naive Bayes Classification Method, Support Vector Machines and K-Nearest Neighbor Algorithms were employed for comparative evaluations within the workplace analytics scope. Notably so, results from this study demonstrate that using Random Forest Algorithm resulted in better performance in predicting employment status with an accuracy rate of 99.40%, predicting company type with 66.60% and lastly predicting company sector with 30.80% when compared to other predictive models utilized during our research work's project lifecycle phase
Moderator Effect of Audit Committee on Earnings Management and Board Diversity: DOI: https://doi.org/10.33093/ijomfa.2023.4.1.3
This study examined the effect of board diversity, audit committee and earnings management of oil and gas (o&g) companies listed in Nigeria stock exchange. Female directors and foreign directors served as proxies for board diversity, audit committee independence and meeting frequency were moderating variables to study possible discretionary accruals in earnings. Eleven o&g companies in Nigeria that were listed that had consistently produced audited yearly financial reports from 2009 to 2019 were employed to accomplish the study's goals. Regression models with fixed and random effects were utilised in the investigation. The outcome showed that earnings management and the board diversity of listed o&g companies in Nigeria was moderated by the audit committee. The findings suggested that Nigerian-listed oil and gas businesses should give a gender quota for female directors. It is advised that regulators consider the number of meetings that audit committees hold, as it is the members' intelligence to comprehend the financial ramifications of management decisions rather than meeting frequency that determines the monitoring of managers' opportunistic attitudes
