THE CASE OF TIMORESE ASSISTANT TEACHERS IN USING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: BASIS FOR EDUCATION POLICY
Learning English in Timor-Leste, a young country in the Expanding Circle of the world’s English usage, whose citizens speak multiple languages, poses diversified challenges that may be reduced through amendments to the educational curriculum in the country. Therefore, this article delved into the experiences of Timorese assistant teachers in a faith-based international school in Dili, Timor-Leste, as they acquire and use English. The lack of existing literature prompted the conduct of this qualitative case study, which involved a sample of eight assistant teachers. Four of the assistant teachers’ advisers were also interviewed for triangulation. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The results showed that the participants had only been exposed to English from middle school, which resulted in their encountering various language challenges. These challenges included interacting with individuals with limited English proficiency, grappling with complex English terminology, and facing abrupt cognitive impediments. Notwithstanding these challenges, they exhibited coping strategies to surmount language barriers, including enrolling in English courses, seeking counsel from more knowledgeable individuals, engaging in informal English conversations, reading English literature, viewing English videos, and employing Google Translate. Moreover, they expressed their plans to engage in self-help practices and attend courses to improve their English language skills. Therefore, the study recommends refurbishing the country’s education policies through the inclusion of English subjects in the primary school curriculum and strengthening their undergraduate programmes on English language and literature
ESTABLISHING AN INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL COURT IN SAUDI ARABIA: LESSONS FROM DUBAI AND SINGAPORE
This article discusses the need and the benefits of establishing an international commercial court in Saudi Arabia. Since Saudi Arabia’s legal system has been criticized regarding its openness to international investments, this issue is observed from the perspective of potential investors and business partners interested in doing business in Saudi Arabia. The aim is to determine how setting up a specialized international commercial court will improve the environment for investments and remove legal uncertainties that arise from the lack of such courts. Furthermore, a brief overview of the international rise of commercial courts worldwide will be provided, with comparative examples of the courts in Dubai and Singapore to reveal how those jurisdictions have adapted to the global economy and ensured their positions as regional leaders and investment hubs. The essential procedural rules will be highlighted to provide ideas and directions for Saudi Arabia. Finally, this article will discuss the challenges the Kingdom faces in the race to become the regional investment leader, and then provide some key takeaways. The objective of this article will be to explain how Saudi Arabia will overcome the challenges in establishing an international commercial court that will specialize in the application and interpretation of international commercial regulations, and why the setting up of an international commercial court will have a positive effect on the attraction of foreign investors to do business in the Kingdom. This will be achieved by examining and discussing Dubai and Singapore as comparative legal systems that have already established flexible dispute resolution forums which have been recognized worldwide
ENRICHMENT OF SYSTEMS THINKING FOR PROBLEM SOLVING IN ENGINEERING SYSTEMS USING THE HERMENEUTIC LOOP: CASE STUDIES FOR DESIGNERS IN THE FIELD OF REMOTE COMMUNICATION
The systems thinking approach to problem solving is a dynamic and productive approach. However, emphasizing only the objective aspects of a phenomena and neglecting their subjective aspects can decrease its problem solving power. In order to enhance the problem solving power of systems thinking, it is proposed in this article to enrich systems thinking by using the hermeneutic loop. This applied research adopts practical aspects of systems thinking and hermeneutics in understanding and solving problems more effectively. The proposed approach is comprised of an additive loop, named the hermeneutic loop, concerning simultaneously “the whole system and its parts” and “subjectively and objectively”. Requirements of systems thinking are highlighted involving the holism and life cycle of the system. A summary of the considerations for systems thinking regarding holism and lifetime are as follows: (1) feedback in lifetime, (2) feed forward, (3) combining human and tools, (4) resources, (5) stock and flow and (6) carrying capacity (saturation). The utilization of this enriched systems thinking is investigated in three real engineering design processes, including case studies for designers in the field of remote communication. As the result, the proposed enriched systems thinking provides an improved understanding of the whole, which improves the solving power of the designers of components, and adds subjective product design to the objective design
FACTORS EFFECTING PADDY PRODUCTIVITY IN THE MADA REGIONS, MALAYSIA
Rice commodity is becoming increasingly important for most countries worldwide, particularly those where rice is the main staple meal. This study examines the socioeconomic attributes of farmers, their perspectives on management practises, and the implementation of paddy machinery technology in the four MADA (Muda Agricultural Development Authority) regions in Malaysia. The study aims to determine the main factors effecting paddy productivity in the MADA regions. Primary data was collected from paddy farmers in the four MADA zones using a standardised questionnaire. The data was collected from 673 respondents from four regions of MADA. The analysis employed both descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results indicate that variables such as land area, selection of paddy planting as the primary occupation, increased time spent on paddy farms, gender, and the educational background of farmers have a significant impact on paddy productivity in the MADA regions. The findings also show that, only a small percentage of respondents (6.2%) followed the crop schedule, and 93.8 percent of them were late. The utilisation of machinery in paddy cultivation achieved the following results: nine farmers achieved a success rate of 85.71 percent, while a majority of farmers (662 farmers) achieved a 71.43 percent utilisation rate, with one farmer earning the lowest usage rate of 57.14 percent. In conclusions the study has found that it is imperative to promote the use of management practises and advanced machinery technologies among paddy farmers to effectively increase productivity
