    DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A WEB-BASED INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR UNIVERSITY STAFF UNION

    The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigerian public universities has long championed the welfare and interests of academic staff. However, operational inefficiencies stemming from manual processes hinder its effectiveness in addressing contemporary challenges. This inefficiency hampers ASUU’s effectiveness and limits its ability to interact efficiently with its members and stakeholders. Therefore, this study proposes that the ASUU Web-Based Information System (AWBIS) should modernize data management, communication, and decision-making within the union. Drawing on related work in online information systems across various sectors, the methodology involves requirements gathering, leading to the development and implementation of AWBIS. Leveraging development technologies, AWBIS offers modules for member management, communication, event organization, and biometric attendance. This project uses the waterfall model approach to developing software as the research methodology. The data collection techniques include interviews and questionnaires. The AWBIS enables various operations to be performed online, consisting of registering members by the admin, logging members, and allowing members to manage their profiles. The system also provides a login page for both members and admins, each with their own username and password. A secure and accessible database for storing memberprofiles, academic information, and other relevant data was created. The successful implementation of AWBIS will significantly streamline ASUU’s operations, resulting in improved communication, reduced administrative burden, and enhanced transparency. Members will have access to up-to-date information, and the system will facilitate better coordination of ASUU’s activities. Future enhancements, including financial management, election processes, loan applications, and mobile app development, are suggested to further optimize AWBIS’s functionality and accessibility. AWBIS is a model for leveraging technology to advance organizational efficiency and effectiveness within the education sector

    In light of prevailing technological advancements, online shopping has become increasingly prevalent. A well-designed webpage interface, particularly in terms of visual appeal, has the potential to evoke customer emotions such as pleasure and arousal, thereby stimulating impulse buying among consumers. In contrast to global brands, local web stores have faced challenges in devising strategies to cultivate an environment conducive to enhancing brand perception and encouraging impulsive buying behavior, specifically in the realm of online local brand retailing. Previous studies have primarily focused on customers’ cognitive perspectives, including privacy concerns, content sharing, and websites credibility. However, existing research has yet to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding customers’ online impulse buying behavior. Addressing these gaps, this study aims to investigate the effect of different web store stimuli on creating consumers’ brand perception of online web stores and its impact on customers’ impulsive buying behavior. Data was collected through purposive sampling, involving 423 users of different online local web stores. The results showed interesting findings with implications for both theory and practice. Specifically, environmental stimuli, such as ambience (lighting), assortment, forum fnac and helping staff, were found to significantly enhance the brand perception of local web store outlets, consequently boosting customers’ impulse buying behavior

    FORECASTING THE REALIZED VOLATILITY OF ISLAMIC EQUITIES USING MULTIVARIATE HAR-TYPE MODELS

    This study proposes nine multivariate intraday models using various realized variation measures with the aim to improve volatility forecasting in the Islamic stock market in Malaysia using a dataset from 1st April 2008 to 31st March 2018. The findings show that considering independently the jump-robust realized volatility, additional daily jump realized volatility, and continuous and discontinuous jump sample path variations improved the in-sample predictive regressions compared to using the standard realized volatility. For the out-of-sample volatility forecasts evaluation, it is observed that the volatility models that disentangled the realized volatility into its continuous and discontinuous jump components have outperformed the rest of the proposed models. This is because both the continuous and discontinuous variation of returns exhibit distinctive substantial information in yielding the final volatility dynamic and thus should be modeled disjointedly. However, the empirical results suggest that the simple autoregressive specification using the standard realized volatility is often performing better or as well as the new extension models. Lastly, this study may provide useful insight in portfolio management, risk assessment, and asset pricing, particularly in the Shariah-compliant equities

    ADOPTION OF THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE ON THE SAFETY AND HEALTH RISKS OF NANOFOOD IN MALAYSIA

    Food derived from nanotechnology or contains engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is widely available for consumers in the marketplace. Oral exposure to ENMs has been linked to various potential adverse effects on human safety and health. In Malaysia, nanofood is regulated with a regulatory framework designed for conventional food without considering the unique and novel properties of ENMs. The adequacy of the existing framework for regulating the safety and health risks of nanofood is ambiguous. This study examined the necessity for Malaysia of having such regulatory framework to govern the safety and health risks of nanofood using the precautionary principle. By adopting the doctrinal analysis, the finding suggests that the existing food safety framework must be amended to incorporate specific provisions on nanotechnology, and that the amendment must be based on the precautionary principle. The new regulatory framework enables the food safety authority to implement the earliest precautionary measure, protecting consumers from serious future harm caused by nanofood. The proposed regulatory framework will strengthen the domestic food safety framework and national food safety policy in meeting the challenge posed by nanofood

    THE VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TENURE RIGHTS- COMPANIES VS TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES IN INDONESIA

    Over the past 12 years, the escalation of violence in conflicts arising from disputes over natural resource management rights between corporations and indigenous communities has become a growing concern across all regions of Indonesia. This abstract introduction highlights the urgent need to address the rising tensions and clashes associated with the competing claims to and utilization of natural resources in the country. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the causes of violence and conflict resolution over natural resources using an empirical legal study with a socio-legal approach adopted through a case study in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Informants for the study were selected using a snowball sampling technique, ensuring a diverse and representative range of perspectives. Secondary data was obtained through a literature study by tracing information from journals, books, and the internet, and data analysis was carried out qualitatively. Furthermore, an analysis was performed on the findings of other studies concerning instances of violence in conflicts related to forest and mining resources. This research found that (1). The violence occurred because the company did not respect the customary community’s natural resource control rights. (2). However, violence can be stopped through violence or mediation (3). Resolution of violence in conflict can only be done through mediation. The authors recommend that: (1). The practice of resolving violence in conflicts of rights over natural resources through mediation needs to be strengthened by the government to realize justice for all. (2). In indigenous communities, apart from state law, the legal landscape is still heavily influenced by customary law and religious law

    Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) remains a contentious and highly debated topic within medical, legal, and ethical spheres. The complex issue of (PAS) raises significant inquiries regarding patient autonomy and societal norms. Ambiguities in conceptual, legal, and ethical aspects impede policy formulation, leading to unequal access and apprehensions about patient welfare and confidence. This article provides a thorough examination of assisted suicide, exploring its legal, ethical, and medical dimensions. It aims to facilitate informed dialogue and stimulate further investigation into the legal framework and ethical considerations surrounding this contentious issue. Through a library-based research approach and qualitative analysis of existing literature, this study delves into the diverse facets of assisted suicide. The article begins with a definition and contextualisation of assisted suicide, distinguishing it from related end-of-life practices. It then delves into the legal landscape, discussing different legal frameworks and regulations across various jurisdictions, and significant legal cases that have shaped the current discourse. From an ethical standpoint, this article explores the ethical considerations involved in assisted suicide, including autonomy, dignity, and the sanctity of life, and presents the perspectives of different stakeholders. The medical perspective examines the role of healthcare professionals, the criteria for assisted suicide, and empirical research on its effectiveness and safety. Realworld case studies are presented to illustrate the complexities of assisted suicide. Furthermore, this article analyses public opinion and ongoing debates on the topic. Ultimately, this analysis aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of assisted suicide, fostering informed discussions and encouraging further exploration of this contentious issue.

    This concept paper is a discussion that emphasizes the virtual reality support idea. Widad FAROKAM is an application based on the system that is compatible with the website surfed by mobile or desktop. The future target user of this system will rehearse the attention of completing the task given and divert their attachment growth by the involvement of a guardian within the task target. Still, the research must explore certain aspects which indeed can make up several issues arise. Widad FAROKAM’ integrated system is based on the currently developed product of R&D named Widad Psychetra Door (WPD). Through the investigation and feasibility study from the same research in a previous paper published on Widad FAROKAM & WPD, the common representation arises from the fourth phase of this R&D product. This fourth phase involved virtual reality.

    HALAL CERTIFICATION: LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATION IN ISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE

    The article examines the moral and legal issues related to halal certification within the context of Islamic jurisprudence. This study also aims to examine the halal certification process\u27 guiding principles and how they affect Shariah law compliance. The research employs a qualitative technique to investigate fundamental Islamic scriptures and modern fatwas to define the standards for halal certification and the moral obligations of certifying agencies. The findings show that halal certification reflects wider ethical convictions in Islamic finance and consumer practices, serving as more than just a regulatory instrument. The study identifies key elements affecting halal certification, such as the need for transparency, observance of Islamic dietary regulations, and the function of Shariah supervisory bodies in guaranteeing conformity. It also draws attention to the difficulties certifying bodies confront in upholding integrity and public trust in the face of expanding market demand. The article concludes by stating that halal certification greatly aids in adhering to Islamic beliefs and fostering ethical consumption. To guarantee that halal certification procedures correspond with the developing interpretations of Islamic jurisprudence, it advocates for increased cooperation between Islamic scholars and certifying bodies. This will promote ethical business practices and increase customer confidence in the halal market

    SOLVING BIPOLAR FULLY FUZZY SYLVESTER MATRIX EQUATIONS WITH NEGATIVE FUZZY NUMBERS

    Sylvester matrix equations play a crucial role in control theory for controller design. Bipolar Fully Fuzzy Sylvester Matrix Equations (FFSME), incorporating both positive and negative components, are employed in controller design to address uncertainties that may affect a system’s performance and stability. However, there is not much existing research on combining bipolar fuzzy numbers and FFSME,and most of them mainly deal with positive coefficients. Thus, this paper presents a method that enables solving the negative coefficient of bipolar FFSME in the form of Left-Right (LR) triangular fuzzynumbers using an Associated Bipolar Linear System (ABLS). To obtain the ABLS, bipolar FFSME is transformed into a bipolar Fully Fuzzy Linear System (FFLS) using the Kronecker product and Vecoperator. Subsequently, the solution is derived through the inverse method, and the equation of the ABLS is rearranged as a bipolar fuzzy matrix. Additionally, this paper provides two numerical examples to illustrate the applicability of the constructed method

    Automatic Negation Detection for Semantic Analysis in Arabic Hotel Reviews Through Lexical and Structural Features: A Supervised Classification

    One significant challenge in sentiment analysis is the presence of negation, which reverses the meanings of sentences, transformingpositive statements into negative ones and impacting the sentiment conveyed in the text. This issue is particularly pronounced in Arabic, a language known for its complex morphology. Detecting negation is crucial for enhancing sentiment analysis performance and various natural language processing applications. This paper presents an approach for automatically detecting negation in user-generated Arabic hotel reviews through lexical and structural features. It comprises several stages: data collection, text pre-processing, feature extraction, supervised learning classification, and evaluation. The study employed multiple supervised classification techniques, including naïve Bayes, random forest, logistic regression, support vector machines, and deep learning, to analyse lexical and structural features extracted from the dataset. The results of the experiments yielded promising outcomes, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach for practical applications. The classifiers exhibited highly comparable performance in identifying negation, with only marginal deviations in their performance metrics. Notably, the deep learning classifier consistently emerged as the top performer, achieving an exceptionally high overall accuracy rate of 99.24 percent, surpassing established benchmarks in Arabic text processing and underscoring its potential for practical applications. These findings hold significant implications for advancing Arabic text processing, particularly in sentiment analysis and related NLP tasks. The high accuracy of 99.24 percent achieved by the deep learning classifier highlights its robustness in accurately detecting negation, a critical challenge in sentiment analysis. This classifier performance demonstrates the potential to be integrated into real-world applications, such as automated review systems and opinion mining tools, where accurate sentiment interpretation is essential.
