INTERNATIONALISATION OF ISLAMIC HIGHER EDUCATION IN INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RATIONALES, CHALLENGES, STRATEGIES AND PRACTICES

    No full text
This study aimed to document, explore, and compare rationales, strategies, and challenges, as well as identify best practices in the internationalisation of several Islamic universities in Indonesia and Malaysia. Drawing on a multiple case study approach, data are sourced by collecting pertinent documents and conducting semi-structured interviews with key informants from public and private Islamic universities in both countries. Data analysis was carried out in two stages. First, the data were analysed separately based on their characteristics. Documents were analysed using document analysis techniques, while data from interviews were examined through thematic analysis. In the second stage, all findings from the first data analysis were collated for a cross-case analysis to identify similarities and differences. The study discovered that both Indonesia and Malaysia aim to address globalisation and enhance their international standing by internationalising their higher education institutions (HEIs). In Indonesia, achieving better academic recognition through internationalisation is a major motivation for Islamic HEIs, especially those seeking a better accreditation status. Although similar motivation is shared by some of the participating Malaysian Islamic HEIs, but achieving academic global prominence has been the major objective of their internationalisation programs. The study also found that the internationalisation strategies of Islamic HEIs in both countries aligned with multiple typologies of internationalisation strategy. However, various challenges hinder the internationalisation efforts of Islamic HEIs in both contexts, including language proficiency, multicultural awareness, the implementation of sustainable and cost-effective internationalisation programs, immigration and international student regulations, as well as inadequate staffing in international offices

BORDER SECURITISATION AND ECONOMIC FACILITATION: THE QUEST FOR FREE VISA AND OPEN-BORDER POLICIES

    No full text
In the context of Malaysia’s economic and border policies, two important developments have taken place. In 2023, the government decided to reopen the Wang Kelian free-flow zone in favour of economic development after its closure in 2015. In the same year, the government eliminated visa requirements to attract tourists from China and India. This study examines the two above mentioned case studies that illustrate the debates in the facilitation of entry for economic development and security concerns. Three findings are revealed. First, this article proposes the hypothesis that Malaysia’s migration control policies can be framed as tension between border securitisation and economic facilitation. From an enforcement perspective, border securitisation is undermined by the facilitation of legal entry in the quest for the state’s economic interests, as the abuse of legal entry facilities is prevalent. Second, security and economic interests may be harmonised through smart border control mechanisms, such as the Digital Arrival Card, data centres that evaluate passenger information, delegating gatekeeping responsibilities to airlines and tourist firms, enforcement, surveillance and denying entry and amnesty for overstayers. Third, the amnesty regime functions as an entry and exit mechanism by blacklisting overstayers from re-entering the state using biometric data

THE IMPACT OF MATERIAL FLOW COST ACCOUNTING ON RESOURCE EFFICIENCY IN SMALL-SCALE SOYBEAN OIL PRODUCTION

    No full text
This study adopted the case study approach to examine material flow cost accounting (MFCA) as a measure of resource efficiency and environmental sustainability in small-scale soybean oil production in South Africa. Data were gathered primarily through direct observation of the soybean oil production process over three months. To achieve the study’s first objective, the Pareto chart was employed to determine and analyse the leading root cause of the negative product cost. The result of the MFCA and Pareto chart analysis found that the highest negative material cost was incurred during the oil extraction process. Therefore, the improvement plan was concentrated on reducing the negative material cost. An investigation into the root cause of these high negative costs was then carried out to seek improvement, after which improvement methods were proposed and implemented. Descriptive statistics and Microsoft Excel were employed to analyse the results obtained before and after the improvement plan implementation. The study found that applying the MFCA technique resulted in a reduction in the negative material costs from 1648.4 Rands to 1359.15 Rands; system costs reduced from 791.69Rands to 622.65 Rands; waste costs reduced from 270 Rands to 249.50 Rands, while energy cost that was expected to increase actually had a reduction from 118.94 Rands to 93.51 Rands. This study, therefore, recommends the application of the MFCA technique in small-scale soybean oil production and similar production processes.

Many emerging markets in developing countries have seen a decline in entrepreneurial activity. This is especially concerning because entrepreneurs constitute a significant share of the workforce, enterprises, and national revenue. In this turbulent time of the COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath, the struggle for economic survival has added considerable pressure on the Nigerian government. Despite the economic challenges, entrepreneurs can still play a significant role in reviving the economy However, for entrepreneurship activities to take place, opportunity identification must first occur. To better understand the factors that influence the identification of entrepreneurial opportunities, this study has examined the potential effects of entrepreneurial social networks, prior knowledge, self-efficacy, proactive personality, alertness, and creativity on opportunity identification. The study employed an exploratory research design and several quantitative methods in the analysis of the collected data. The population of the study was the total number of registered nascent entrepreneurs in Southwestern Nigeria, comprising six (6) states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti. A muti-stage sampling technique was used, while primary data was collected directly from all the participants by administering the study questionnaires. The number of questionnaires administered was 300, with a sample size of 103, which is this study’s minimum according to the Gpower result. The study found that entrepreneurial alertness and self-efficacy exhibited the strongest correlation, suggesting that entrepreneurial ability was closely linked to entrepreneurial skills. Entrepreneurial creativity and entrepreneurial self-efficacy also demonstrated a strong relationship, indicating that higher entrepreneurial skills were associated with greater entrepreneurial commitment. These variables had jointly enhanced the performance of emerging entrepreneurs in Southwestern Nigeria, highlighting the need for entrepreneurial training programs and policies that could help cultivate these abilities and characteristics. Therefore, this study has shown that opportunity identification shaped by social networks, prior knowledge, self-efficacy, proactive personality, alertness, and creativity could play a critical role in driving business sustainability by enabling entrepreneurs to recognize and exploit viable, innovative, and enduring market opportunities
