    Get PDF
Islamic mutual funds (IMF) are growing as a substitutional investment vehicle for investors who want to combine value and financial objectives in their investment. A group of the funds is managed by one Investment Company called the family of funds. This study investigates the flow-performance relationship in IMF, in addition to the extent to which family and fund characteristics contribute to explaining fund flows in Saudi Arabia for the period from 2007 to 2017. The study uses raw returns to calculate the fund performance and use the percentage money flow (FLOW), defined as money flow scaled by the total net asset of the fund. The results show there is a positive relationship between past performance and fund flow that mean IMF investors make rational financial decisions by directing fund flows to better performing funds. In addition, the results show family characteristics have an impact on IMF inflow

Cymbopogon nardus (C. nardus) or fragrance lemongrass is a member of Gramineae family which is well known for its citronella oil content that is commonly used as a natural fragrant oil, in insect repellents, as well as in beauty, household and perfumery products. C. nardus is one of the unique herbs that has been widely discussed in Malay Medical Manuscript and has been consumed by Malay practitioner as it possesses various anti biological activities such as anti fungal, anti bacteria and anti-inflammatory. In traditional system of medicine among Malay traditional people, C. nardus has been used for the treatment of fever, muscle pain, and many kinds of illness. Various uses shown by this herb and the tendency of high application of the herb among Malay society has led us to study C. nardus according to the scientific perspective.  Therefore, the objectives of this study are to identify the morphology of  C. nardus and its application from Malay traditional’s perspectives, as well as to determine the active compounds present in the herb through scientific findings.  Two different parts of leaves and stems of C. nardus were extracted using steam distillation method for 2 hours. The chemical composition of citronella oil was determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). An amount of 0.55 % and 0.024 % of citronella oil were extracted from leaves and stems parts, respectively. The main compositions of oil extracted from the leaves part are citronellol (41.4 %), methyleugenol (80.2 %), citronellal (39.7 %), D- limonene (40 %) and geraniol (36.5 %). Meanwhile, the extraction from the stems composed of α-Himachalene (45.34%), Citronellol acetate (48.2 %), cis-Geraniol (57.8 %) and endo- Borneol (26.2 %). Thus, it can be concluded that C. nardus leaves extraction yield higher citronella oil content as compared to stems and consist of different main chemical compositions between the two parts

    Get PDF
Supplication was viewed as man’s response to the exigency of the condition, in which he was driven to seek security, status, prosperity, sustainability and permanence by identifying himself with a reality greater, more worthy and more durable than himself. Being aware of this fact, man always seeks assistance from his Lord over daily challenges and endeavours. A da‘i whose task is to call people to the Way of his Lord could not but seek the help of this Lord to grant him success and to remove any impediment that may hinder his ability to discharge his duty effectively. It is against this background that this paper aims to assess the role of supplication in da‘wah programmes. To achieve this, Qur’anic approach that x-rays the prayers of the Prophets of Islam to facilitate their da‘wah programmes was adopted. This approach has been recommended for present day duaat who intend to carry out da’wah programmes to enable them successful in their missionary activities

Analisis Kritis Terhadap Pandangan Sarjana Dalam Mendefinisikan Manhaj, Uslub Dan Wasilah Dakwah: [The Critical Analysis Toward the Views of Scholars in Defining Manhaj, Uslūb And Wasīlah Da’wah]

Abstract There are three terms that usually used by scholars in discussion on method of da’wah namely, manhaj, uslūb and wasīlah. They have different views in defining each of these terms. Some scholars provide a wide definition while others provide a narrow definition. Some define method as manhaj, but some define the same method as the uslūb. Difference perspective in defining this matter led to the different terms but the essence of the subject is same. Library research method is used to discuss different view among scholars on this matter. The result found that the method of da’wah could be divided into three levels; the first is manhaj to determine the direction of a da’wah that is called manhaj, the approach used that is called uslūb and the medium used is that called wasīlah. The difference among scholars in expressing method da\u27wah is only in terminology chosen, not in the essence because they agree that da\u27wah should be done with the appropriate methods and approaches that may differ according to nature of target groups. Different approaches are inevitable because da’wah could be seen from many perspectives

Dying Wishes: Understanding Advance Medical Directives from the Malaysian and Islamic Law Perspectives

    Get PDF
The respect for patient autonomy is a bioethical principle that has acquired a compelling degree of prevalence in modern medical practice. While a doctor is ethically and lawfully bound to respect a patient’s preference and personal values in administering the requisite treatment, the duty to do so is more intricate in end-of-life care, when most patients are unable to partake in the decision-making process. An advance medical directive thus provides an assurance that the patient’s right to make autonomous decisions is preserved and will not be defeated by any future incapacity. It also serves to alleviate the ethical dilemma faced by doctors and assist them to determine the course of treatment according to the incompetent patient’s wishes. In turn, this facilitates healthcare providers to effectuate a more functional allocation of resources, which include costly life-sustaining equipment. In Malaysia, although advance care planning and advance medical directives are fairly novel concepts, there have been recent calls by certain sectors to increase awareness among the public and incorporate such measures into the delivery of healthcare services. This paper seeks to discuss the viability of integrating advance medical directives into the Malaysian regulatory framework on the provision of healthcare. Accordingly, this will also include deliberation on the Islamic standpoint with regard to the subject matter, in view of Malaysia’s religious demography and the position of Islam as the official religion of the country

Covid-19 and the Future Scenarios of Muslim Societies

    Get PDF
Covid-19’s shock to the world economy is greater than both the 2018 Financial Crisis and the Great Depression 1929-1939. In two weeks, 10 million became unemployed in the United States, far exceeding the 2008 financial crisis of which 8.8 million lost their jobs in 106 weeks. Nations that were previously seen as sustainable and recession-proof also looked shaky and some countries have already tumbled into economic recession. The world has seen a trillion-dollar stimulus package injected, including developed and rich countries, to breathe a sigh of relief into the economy. By adapting the content analysis methodology and pragmatic critical thinking processes, this article attempts to provide a new perspective on the dynamics of the Muslim Societies in the future through three impending scenarios namely the Disowned, the Outlier, and the Preferred. These scenarios are significant and can be used as a reference or consideration for post-pandemic strategic planning. Muslim Societies need to have the right post-pandemic vision to ensure change towards a better future

Potensi Wakaf Sebagai Mekanisma Perlindungan dan Jaminan Sosial Golongan Pelarian Di Malaysia: Satu Analisa Kualitatif: [Waqf as a Potential Protection Mechanism Against Loses and Social Guarantee for Refugees in Malaysia: A Qualitative Analysis]

    Get PDF
Today, in the globalized world, new media technologies including social media platforms have dramatically changed the nature of human communications. Old and new media platforms have to some extend converged and allowed the circulation of content to reach global audiences. Media content in various forms has been transmitted to the Muslim society through oral communication, written materials as well as printing, broadcast and new media technologies. Ideally, Muslim culture is derived from the culture of knowledge and communication. As understood from the notion of ‘ilm (knowledge) and iqra’ (read), the history of communication in Islam has been firmly based on the transmission of Islam as a comprehensive way of life. This article offers a systematic way of understanding the nurturing process of Islamic media content in the digital environment by examining and conceptualizing the related issues of the media ecosystem in Muslims society. Therefore, crafting the variety of Islamic media content to suit the different medium is in a need to be re-examined. This paper will evaluate issues related to overview of Islamic entertainment, examine the need for new ijtihad (legal reasoning), and nurturing Islamic popular culture through the establishment of a competitive and dynamic Islamic production house. It is argued that globalization has “imposed” some sorts of new challenges to the Muslim world with regards to the media philosophy and technology
