The difference in Lexical Meaning of ‘Female’ in the Malay Language: ‘Perempuan’ against ‘Wanita’: A Corpus-Driven Analysis
Cognitive linguistics is an interdisciplinary branch of linguistics, combining knowledge and research from cognitive science, cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, and linguistics. One of the subjects often being studied under this discipline includes a phenomenon in which a lexical tends to be followed by other lexical contiguously with the word. Hence, to analyze this phenomenon, Sinclair (1991) and Louw (1993) introduced a linguistics approach known as semantic prosody. The usage of semantic preference will form clusters of meanings that will describe the common meanings in certain lexical or phrases. Meanings that were inherited from these semantic preferences will evoke cultural connotations that can reflect the social reality of the speaker. This article will discuss the collocation importance of ‘perempuan’ and ‘wanita’, two lexical that can be translated into the exact word in English: female. A collocation analysis was conducted on a text corpus in order to see which lexical often collocates with these two lexical. The collocation meaning of ‘perempuan’ and ‘wanita’ was evaluated based on the lexical list collocated with these two lexical. The result shows that ‘perempuan’ is often used to describe the gender or sexuality of a person, while ‘wanita’ is mainly used to describe something religious. ‘Perempuan’ also has a negative value but only when collocated with negative value pronouns. This research is hoped to add some value to the previous studies of collocation meaning as well as become a pioneer for upcoming studies
Exploring the Influence of Modalities on the Translator\u27s Style within a Multidimensional Analysis: A Case Study in the English Translations of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan
This study examines the influence of the modality on translator style through a multidimensional analysis of five English translations of Ah Q Zhengzhuan. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research integrates quantitative analysis using Multidimensional Analysis (MDA) framework (Biber, 1988) and Multidimensional Analysis Tagger (MAT) proposed by Nini (2019) to investigate the use of necessity, possibility, and predictive modals across the translations. Complementing the quantitative data, a qualitative analysis explores specific examples of modal choices made by each translator, providing deeper insights into their stylistic and cultural strategies. The findings indicate that Leung and Lyell favour stronger predictive modals, thereby reinforcing future certainty and maintaining the authoritative tone of the original text, while Lovell and Wang tend to balance the use of possibility and necessity modals, resulting in a more adaptive narrative style. This study offers practical implications for translators by illustrating how modality influences the expression of authority, certainty and cultural reproduction in translation, contributing to a broader understanding of the translator’s style. By bridging quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the research provides original insights into the modality’s role in cross-cultural literary translations and its impact on both narrative tone and cultural interpretation

BEYOND LIKES! INVESTIGATING THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS ON eWOM AND PURCHASE INTENTION IN SOCIAL MEDIA
The emergence and pervasive adoption of social networking sites (SNSs) have evolved the means in which people communicate and share information. Accompanying this advancement, electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) has garnered considerable interest as a potent tool for information transmission and consumer decision-making. Given the interpersonal dynamics inherent in SNSs, this research investigates the association between antecedents of social relationship and eWOM as well as purchase intentions. Consequently, a conceptual model was constructed and validated to ascertain the significance of distinct factors, including interpersonal influence, social capital, homophily, and trust, as precursors to engagement in eWOM. The study also explored the moderating impact of social support on the association between eWOM intention and purchase intention. Additionally, the study analysed the moderating impact of gender on the relationship between interpersonal influence and eWOM intention. Using data from 383 respondents, the adequacy and accuracy of the model were assessed by employing partial least square technique of structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that informative influence, bridging social capital, and trust have a favourable impact on users’ engagement in eWOM activities, which further effects purchase intention. On the other hand, normative influence, bonding social capital and perceived homophily demonstrated a negative relationship with eWOM engagement. These research findings have practical implications for marketers targeting new markets through eWOM activities
Surgery for Superior Cerebellar Artery Aneurysm
Background: Superior Cerebellar Artery (SCA) aneurysms account for about 1% to 3% of all intracranial aneurysms. SCA has an interesting anatomy, with multiple options of surgical approaches.
Methods: From January 2022 to May 2023, a total of 167 aneurysm cases were treated at our centre. Only two patients were confirmed to have SCA aneurysm from cerebral angiography. Demographic study, clinical characteristics, radiological data, treatment plan and outcome were analysed.
Results: The total number of vascular cases at our centre from January 2022 to May 2023 is 241. There were 167 cases of aneurysm (69.3%), where 115 patients (68.9%) went for surgery, and 52 (31.1%) opted for endovascular intervention. The distribution of aneurysms by location are ACA 7.2%, ACOM 24.6%, MCA 8.9%, PCOM 18.6%, ICA 21.6%, SCA 1.2%, PCA 1.8%, PICA 8.4%, vertebral artery 2.4%, and basilar artery 5.3%. Complex aneurysms made up 58.7% of all cases and were treated with endovascular procedures more often than simple aneurysms (36.7% vs. 23.2%, P = 0.04). Most patients in both the surgical and endovascular groups had good recovery outcomes (79.1% and 76.9%, respectively; P = 0.78). Both patients with SCA aneurysms were managed surgically. Two sample cases are presented: i) a proximal saccular SCA aneurysm treated with pterional craniotomy, transylvian approach, and clip reconstruction; and ii) a mid-SCA fusiform, multilobulated aneurysm managed with temporal craniotomy, subtemporal approach, Superficial Temporal Artery (STA)–SCA bypass, and excision of the aneurysm.
Conclusions: SCA aneurysms are rare and present significant surgical challenges due to their complex anatomy. Choosing the right surgical approach depends on the aneurysm’s location along the SCA segments. With proper technique and surgical experience, microsurgical treatment can offer favourable outcomes for patients
Social Support for Pursuing and Perseverance in Career Related Higher Education: The Lived Experiences of First-Generation Maldivian Youth
The current education and employment policies of Maldives highlight the importance of increasing the number of youths with higher education for the sustainable development of the country. Given the importance of social support, this article focuses on young people\u27s experiences of social support in deciding to pursue a career relevant to higher education and their commitment to the programme and future career. The study used a qualitative research methodology of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Participant selection focused on capturing recent experiences of making career-relevant higher education decisions. Hence, 14 first-generation higher education students studying in an undergraduate degree programme (in Maldives) were purposively selected as participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore their experiences of choosing a career-related higher education programme. Findings show that family networks were the most dominant source of social support and few participants also received social support from institutional members (school and college/university personnel), peers, and work colleagues. The article describes the degrees of social support mobilised by the students from different social networks and highlights the importance of strengthening institutional social networks for youth
EdQUAL – A Paradigm to Measure Overall Quality in Education: Empirical Evidence from Vietnamese Lower Secondary Schools
“Quality in education” is an ambitious objective that every education entity or system wants to pursue, regardless of levels of governance, legislation, diversity of motivation, and approaches towards education. However, the alignment on how we should define quality in education is not reached yet. That challenge in illustrating a portrait of quality education also makes it more difficult for school leaders and education system leaders to improve education quality. For hundreds of years, education systems worldwide witnessed the blooming of theories and practices to tackle this Gordian knot. To be dated, most of the recent approaches focus on the macro perspective of an education system and demand high-level technical skills to implement. Whilst, there are limited well-known guidelines and practices for school leaders to capture the overall picture of contemporary quality issues at their schools for instant and continuous improvements. As a small puzzle to contribute to the fourth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4), this research proposes a framework to measure overall quality in education using a lean and rounded perspective, which can be adopted by any school, school district, or education system. Besides, using the data of 2,239 students’ expectations and perceptions about the quality in education, this article also presents the empirical evidence of eight Vietnamese lower secondary schools as a case study
Reading Intervention Programmes Employed in EFL Reading Contexts: A Review Article
Among the four major language skills, reading serves as an important tool for successful academic achievement. Various studies in EFL contexts have focused on the effect of some types of instruction on EFL students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this paper is to review these studies which have examined the effect of some instructional inputs on the development of reading comprehension among EFL students at both school and tertiary levels. This study is valuable as it sheds lights on intervention programmes that have been employed for the sake of improving reading comprehension in EFL contexts. It further provides some insights that can be useful for future researchers who intend to use reading intervention programmes. This review article has revealed that most of these studies have focused on EFL students in schools. Additionally, this review has shown that most of these studies have not employed full intervention programmes that pay attention to the improvement of students’ reading skills. Rather, each of these studies has just focused on one aspect and examined its effect on students’ reading comprehension. For example, while some studies examined the effect of extensive reading, others have focused on the effect of a selection of cognitive strategies on EFL students’ reading comprehension. This study highlights the need for more studies that should consider the effect of instructional packages such as Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA), task-based instruction, Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI), extensive reading, and cooperative learning on the development of EFL students’ reading comprehension
