Get PDFThe paper ostensibly refers to Harold Bloom’s categories of the anxiety of influence. Bloom’s theory is treated as an immanentist one, i.e. text/aesthetics/personality-oriented, which is specific to the period in which the theory was developed. However, at least from the 80s of the XXth century, there occurs a visible change towards sociologization of all the human sciences. The paper appropriates and resignificates Bloom’s categories and intermingles them with the concepts of social psychology in order to enable a description of the condition of writers in the current social contex

Get PDFMusic is obviously not only an aesthetic phenomenon. It is embeddedin a dense network of social relations. However, its social involvementis rather ambiguous, particularly since the second half of the twentiethcentury. On the one hand, music is one of the main elements of culturalcapitalism and a part of the system of domination. On the other hand,music provokes, (co)produces or possibly strengthens and coexists witha number of counterdiscourses and social projects of counterhegemoniccharacter.The main objective of the paper is to examine relationships between both, revolutionary jazz and revolutionary social movements, namely the civil rights movement, but above all radical movements, especially black power movement. The crucial questions I am interested in are problems of selforganization, performative social practices, as well as alternatives elaborated by radical-oriented jazz circles in various social dimensions, for instance economic or symbolic.Muzyka, co oczywiste, nie jest zjawiskiem wyłącznie estetycznym. Osadzona jest w sieci relacji społecznych, jednakowoż jej społeczne uwikłanie nie jest jednoznaczne, szczególnie od drugiej połowy dwudziestego wieku. Z jednej strony stanowi ona współcześnie jeden z głównych elementów kapitalizmu kulturowego, jest zatem częścią systemu dominacji. Z drugiej jednak, muzyka prowokuje i współwytwarza lub ewentualnie wzmacnia i koegzystuje z licznymi (kontr)dyskursami i projektami społecznymi o antyhegemonicznym charakterze. Z tak nakreślonej perspektywy rozpatruję wzajemne relacje między rewolucyjnym formalnie i społecznie jazzem a ruchami społecznymi, zarówno ruchami konstytuującymi civil rights movement, przede wszystkim jednak radykalnymi, odwołującymi się do idei black power. Interesowały mnie szczególnie kwestie samoorganizacji i praktyk społecznych oraz alternatywy wypracowywane przez radykalizujące środowiska jazzowe w rozmaitych przestrzeniach, na przykład gospodarczej, ale i symbolicznej

Get PDFUnconditionality is the main feature of the idea of basic income. What we saw in last decades is development of conditional cash transfers in developed and especially in developing countries. The tension between expansive conditionality and proposals of unconditional basic income is the main interest of this article. First, author develops understanding of conditionality distinguishing three types of it with the consideration of the definition, role and effectiveness of social sanctions. The context for presentation of this topics is the classical construct of social security system with main social insurance pillar dependent on labour market participation and supplemental social assistance one for those without social insurance entitlements and poor. Against this background author assess some weaknesses of the case for the basic income supported by Guy Standing and some possibilities of making them less persuasive.Kluczowa dla koncepcji dochodu powszechnego jest jego bezwarunkowość. W ostatnich kilku dekadach mamy do czynienia z rozwojem warunkowości w zastosowaniu do niektórych świadczeń pieniężnych w krajach rozwiniętych i rozwijających się. Napięcie między ekspansywną warunkowością a postulatem usunięcia wszelkich warunków będzie przedmiotem tego artykułu. Temat zostanie przedstawiony poprzez naszkicowanie teorii warunkowości z uwzględnieniem sankcji socjalnych w odniesieniu do pomocy społecznej i w kontekście zabezpieczenia społecznego dochodu. Na tym tle rozważone zostaną stanowiska krytyczne w stosunku do warunkowości, w tym zwolenników dochodu powszechnego takich jak Guy Standing. Przedstawione zostaną też wnioski o charakterze praktycznym, co do wzmacniania strategii zwolenników bezwarunkowości
“Did somebody say ‘transition’?” A critical Intervention into the use of a notion
Get PDFFrom the time of its introduction, the concept of ‘transition’ has effected a tectonic shift in our understanding of post-socialism. In the process which has taken place during the last couple of decades after the collapse of East European socialist regimes, it has become transformed from one of the signifiers of the political and social change which occurred into a cornerstone for thinking, analyzing and predicting the future of post-socialism. Furthermore, in this article it is posited that all the political and social processes occurring in the ex-socialist countries are defined in relation to transition as an all-encompassing form of post-socialist experience. Relying on the discursive theory of Ernesto Laclau, this article attempts to consider together the usually separated questions of epistemology and ontology, and to ask what is the connection between scientific origins of the concept of transition and its political legitimacy. We claim that transition is a “sutured“ structure composed of various social experiences and political strategies, which naturalizes and universalizes the contingent power struggles that are taking place and will take place in the future of post-socialist countries. Therefore, severing the existing bonds between transition and the actually existing post-socialism is a necessary precondition for creating a more complex and productive understanding of the societies of East and South East Europe

On the one hand I highlight the focus of the Foucauldian liberation project; on the other hand I want to justify this project on an ontological level by introducing a “machine language” (inspired by the two-volume work Capitalism and Schizophrenia of Deleuze and Guattari). For this purpose I construct a research mini-tool whereby the difference between discipline and regimen will be analyzed. Moreover, in conclusion, I point out some weaknesses of the project offered by the author of The History of Sexuality which are revealed by the perspective I propose.Cel niniejszego artykułu jest dwojaki. Z jednej strony zamierzam wskazać, w którym miejscu leży punkt ciężkości Foucaultowskiego projektu wolnościowego, z drugiej – pragnę ów projekt uzasadnić na poziomie ontologicznym poprzez wprowadzenie „języka maszynowego” (wyraźnie zainspirowanego dwutomowym dziełem Capitalisme et schizophrénie Deleuze’a i Guattariego). W tym celu skonstruuje pewne mininarzędzie badawcze, za pomocą którego będę analizował różnicę pomiędzy dyscypliną a reżymem. The desire for fullness. The fantasmatic logic of modernization discourses in the turn of the 19th century in Łódź
No full textThe tension inherent in the desire to be modern appeared with all its strength in the discourses surrounding an alien, rapidly developing industrial center in the middle of the rural Kingdom of Poland – the city of Łódź,. In this article, I attempt to reconstruct the logic of press and reportage discourses dealing with this new experience. The press, reportage, and literary discourses concerning the newly established locus of modernity – the city of Łódź – reveal the work of ideological fantasy, a logic of discourse in reportages, essays and novels describing an imaginary diagnosis of reality and a fantasy about its utopian version, as well as the obstacles which always prevent the fulfillment of utopia and even threaten it with a more horrific dystopian vision. Still, the clue lies in the obstacle itself, which is at one and the same time the foundation allowing any utopian project to appear at all, as well a vision of reality
Po co nam garść pieniędzy? Refleksje o kryzysie i walkach wokół pracy reprodukcyjnej
Get PDFThe paper discusses basic income in the context of feminist political ecology using the concepts of reproductive labor, both performed by people and by nature. In the first part we elaborate on Wages for Housework campaign as a forerunner of the idea of basic income. The campaign inscribed the concept of income into intersectional relation between patriarchy and capitalism what was a key element of its revolutionary dimension. In the second part we analyze three different social struggles in order to create a ground for further reflections over the legitimacy such tools (and resolutions) as basic income. On the one hand the paper highlights some elements of the crisis of social reproduction, brought and further deepen by neoliberal reforms in Poland over the 25 years. On the other hand, it speaks to the issues of ecological crisis which needs to be taken into account in every anti-capitalist theory or strategy. Thus, the article aims to investigate if the wage demands for both reproductive and productive labor are still relevant in the era of neoliberal capitalism.Artykuł rozważa kwestię dochodu podstawowego z perspektywy feministycznej ekologii politycznej, wykorzystującej kategorię pracy reprodukcyjnej ludzi i przyrody. W pierwszej części nawiązujemy do Kampanii na rzecz Płacy za pracę domową – prekursorki dochodu podstawowego, która kwestię dochodów wpisywała w problematykę relacji między patriarchatem a kapitalizmem, co nadawało Kampanii rewolucyjny wymiar. W dalszej części artykuł przywołuje trzy aktualne walki społeczne, które są podstawą do dalszych rozważań na temat zasadności rozwiązania takiego jak dochód podstawowy. Z jednej strony naświetla sytuację kryzysu opieki w Polsce, narastającego wraz z neoliberalnymi reformami ostatnich 25 lat. Z drugiej rozwija problematykę kryzysu ekologicznego, którego rozwiązanie trzeba uwzględnić w każdej teorii i strategii antykapitalistycznej. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy postulat płacy za pracę reprodukcyjną/produkcyjną ma dalej sens w dobie neoliberalnego kapitalizmu
