Enhanced Storage Mechanism for Secured Parallel Network File System

    Get PDF
The main aim of this dissertation is to study how parallel network file system and storage appliances are integrated to storage computing. The prime focus is on file locking techniques, state maintenance of file locks and layouts, data compression and data protection across network attached storage and parallel network file system. The problem statement relies how the enhancement of storage mechanism for secured parallel network file system will benefit the storage computing environment. In order to comply with these objectives, a study is conducted and data is collated by visiting storage customer data sites, references of storage summit articles, journal references and by participating in storage conferences and workshops across globe. Based on the analysis of data, the legacy usage of network lock manager and network status monitor in file locking mechanism, unhandled locks and layouts, legacy security model used with pNFS client and servers, a single pattern of file-based data compression and non-dynamic external data protection techniques on storage computing system has resulted high impact on network attached storage computing. The challenges faced translates how the new techniques, lease and delegation algorithm for file locking, snapshot enabled locks and layouts for data state, integration of highly secured Kerberos security on storage for pNFS locks and layouts, data block size algorithm enabled deduplication on file, block and object patterns and the redundant array of independent disk data protection can create impact on storage computing system. The proposed techniques resulted synchronous LEASE file locking, capturing of state of locks and layouts, Kerberos secured the pNFS locks and layouts on storage, new algorithm enabled the scalable data compression using data block size compression algorithm and better dynamic data protection using RAID

An Application of Contextualised Knowledge Elicitation in the Development of Knowledge Management Systems based on Identified Critical Success Factors

    Get PDF
A significant number of ineffective Knowledge Management Systems inundating the marketplace today necessitates the identification of critical success factors prior to the development of successful Knowledge Management Systems. Critical Success Factors (CSF) that embody contextual elements are investigated and determined to form a contextual-based framework that would be useful for KMS developer in building a KMS while taking into consideration of elements beyond merely technical dimensions. The framework guides the knowledge elicitation process to acquire contextual aspects from knowledge workers among others. In building the framework, a mixed mode data gathering method was adopted to investigate KM practices and KMS implementations across five organisations from various industries. A purposive sampling was used for the survey followed by semi-structured interviews. The findings led to a refined list of six (6) Critical Success Factors governing contextual knowledge elicitation namely KM Strategy, Knowledge Repository, KM Measurement Metrics, Core KM Features, Motivational Factors and KM Governance. In order to formulate the theoretical framework, activity theory and knowledge value added were used as the theoretical underpinning. The outcome of the theoretical contributions are the KMS-AT Development Framework, the Knowledge Asset Value Stream Model, the KM-AT Model and the KM Measurement Metrics. The practical contributions of this research include the KMS Business Case Blueprint and the KMS Requirements Blueprint. The culmination of the research is the validation of the KMS-AT Development Framework through the development and deployment of a prototype knowledge elicitation tool for acquiring contextual knowledge in building Knowledge Management Systems

Purpose: The focus of this paper is to identify learners’ satisfaction and performance levels in an online learning environment at the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) universities in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach: 2283 valid questionnaires were completed by three batches of undergraduates. The responses revealed a significant correlation between the learners’ performance and satisfaction with the learning materials, assessment management, academic facilitation, the services provided by the universities and the promptness of their responses. The stepwise regression analysis indicated that services and assessment management significantly influenced learner performance. Findings: All the independent variables had means between 3.210 and 3.647. This indicates that the learners were satisfied with their usage of learning materials, assessment management, academic facilitation and the services provided by the universities. However, only two variables were related to learners’ performance, namely assessment management and services rendered by the universities. Research limitations/implications: Future studies should consider the inclusion of other variables such as the availability of alternative modes of enquiry and refining the items use to measure the variable in this study. The study could also engage a longitudinal method of data collection and be administered on a broader population involving all faculties and program levels. Practical implications: This study suggests to policy makers and academic leaders that they should continue to provide the current excellent level of support in the form of resources and services but they need to find creative ways to engender better performances by their learners. Originality/value: Earlier models of distance education used to be centered on correspondence courses, audio-based courses and video-taped lectures. These models are being updated with internet or computer based models. Consequently, there are different challenges in the delivery of ODL programs today. Hence, a learner’s demonstrated success in a conventional delivery may not adequately predict his or her success in an ODL program. Understanding the performance of present day ODL programs’ success factors will allow new ODL universities, or brick and mortar universities in the process of transforming to blended learning, undertake the necessary steps to ensure the success of their ODL programs. Keywords: Open and Distance Learning (ODL) universities, Malaysia, Learners’ Performance, Learners’ Satisfaction

Implementasi Algoritma Cheapest Insertion Heuristic (CIH) dalam Penyelesaian Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP)

    Get PDF
Traveling salesman problem (TSP) is the problem of a salesman to visit the city of each city connected to each other and there is the weight of travel between the cities so as to form a complete weighted graph. Departing from a certain initial city, a salesman had to visit (n-1) another city exactly once and return on the initial city of departure. The purpose of TSP is to find the route of all cities with minimum total weight. Many algorithms have been found to solve the TSP, one of which is the Cheapest Insertion Heuristic (CIH) algorithm in the process of inserting weighted steps obtained from the equation c (i, k, j) = d (i, k) + d (k, j) - d (i, j). This algorithm provides different travel routes depending on the order of insertion of cities on the subtour in question. In this final project, the writer took the problem of distribution route of mineral water of al-ma'some 240 ml cup type, with vehicle capacity to meet 1200 carton and have different customer / agent demand that is the distance of depot and agent far from each other, distribution costs

Relationship Between Job Characteristics, Job Satisfaction And Productivity In The Citarum River Restorationagencies, West Java,Republic Of Indonesia

    Get PDF
It has been more than 30 years since the Government of Indonesia and the Regional Government of West Java Province carried out a program to restore the Citarum River, where the water was brown and dirty with garbage, and had chemical smell due to the domestic and chemical waste from the surrounding factories. The restoration work, which was focused solely on developing infrastructure, was proven ineffective in rehabilitating the river to its former and functioning role as an ecosystem for the living things nearby. Against this background, this study hypothesizes that the restoration work of the Citarum river can be more productive through the job design for the employees, namely job characteristics, in the Citarum restoration agencies. Thus this study was conducted on the relationship between job characteristics, job satisfaction and productivity amongst employess in the citarum restoration agencies in Bandung, Karawang and Bekasi, West Java. A sample of 283 respondents were collected and using SEM- analysis, the results of the studies indicated that the job characteristics and job satisfaction are the factors that have significant effects to increase the productivity in the restoration agencies of Citarum River with a value tvalue 4.42 (>1.96); whilst the job satisfaction variable has an influence on productivity with value tvalue 9.600 (>1.96). Thus the study concluded that the job design such as job characteristics with the increase in job satisfaction as a mediator has a significant effect on the productivity of employees in the restoration work of the Citarum River
