    Get PDF
The main research objective was to determine the effectiveness of Leadership Development Programs (LDP) in the context of the Oil and Gas exploration firms in Abu Dhabi of United Arab Emirates (UAE) which are state-owned enterprises (SOE). After reviewing the literature review on SOEs, several relevant variables were identified. The dependent variable of the study was the LDP effectiveness while the independent variables were the government vision and individual values. In addition to the dependent variable and independent variables it was speculated that they would be mediated by organizational commitment and LDP program design. The coaching process in LDP was given critical importance in almost all respects such as in successful LDP outcome, LDP design and curriculum. There were six general hypotheses which were developed. The hypotheses of the research had focused on the influence and relationship between various variables and the sub-variables of the research. The study had adopted the quantitative methodology. The data was collected using a 5-part survey questionnaire which comprised 36 questions. The collected data of 255 samples were analysed using the SPSS version 20 software producing the correlation and regression results. The general trend of the participant responses showed their agreement and acceptance of being engaged in LDPs to improve their leadership skills. It was found that the Structural Contingency Theory (SCT) was suitable to explain the relationship between the variables. In addition, it was recommended to managers and policy makers in Abu Dhabi’s firms to focus on developing communication channels for better application and design of LDPs

Healthcare organizations strive to make the best use of their organizational knowledge. The collective know-hows of the medical workers directly affect the quality of the delivered healthcare services. This study addresses the healthcare knowledge-sharing among a community of specialized physicians. An extensive study of the literature on knowledge-sharing in industries generally and healthcare organizations specifically were presented. Six focal elements were detected in previous attempts to address the knowledge-sharing status in healthcare organizations. Additionally, three previous models for healthcare knowledge management were analyzed. The studied literature along with the three studied models helped in constructing the framework and suggesting a suitable research methodology for primary data collection. Qualitative approach of in-depth interview technique was used for interviewing eight specialized physicians. The data collected from the interviewees were then analyzed and produced explanatory themes and codes. These themes are physicians’ acquisition of medical knowledge, staff participating in the knowledge sharing, knowledge-sharing culture, ICT-based knowledge sharing and top management involvement. The findings resulted in recognizing four considerations which ought to be taken into account for successful knowledge-sharing activities and learning initiatives in the healthcare organization. Conclusions and recommendations for future studies were presented based on the implications of this research study

Most Tertiary Education Institutions (TEIs) have set up quality assurance processes to ensure quality of teaching and learning. The importance of quality assurance mechanisms in TEIs is revealed in the literature review which commends that clearly defined and effective quality assurance (QA) policies are necessary. The purpose of this study is to explore academics’ understanding on the impact of QA practices on their professional practices in a TEI at the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE). Data for this research has been gathered from the analysis of selected institutional texts on QA and in-depth interviews carried out with academics from different departments, schools and with varying years of experience at the institution. The data were analysed, segmented into categories to look at relationship and patterns. The phenomenon of QA in a specific context has been investigated through a qualitative research approach. The findings of this study show that academics viewed QA practices as positive. The academics described that the implementation of QA has led to quality in academic and administrative practices in higher education and has also contributed to standardization, transparency and quality in teacher training. The empirical data confirmed that there is a wide gap between the expectations of academics with regard to QA processes and what actually has been accomplished. The study suggested that the lack of an established institutional text on QA processes and procedures of how QA should be carried out confine the implementation of QA initiative at institutional level. There is a clear indication from the respondents of this study that the relationship between quality and quality assurance is not well defined. One of the key findings of this study is that the academics forcefully defended the boundaries of academic work and felt that the additional burden associated with an increasing change. QA practices have just been added into the traditional scope of academic work An important conclusion can be drawn from this research is that the apparent complexities for implementing an effective QA mechanism in this particular context are mainly due to the lack of participation, cooperation and involvement between academic staff and institutional management

This study focuses on the determinants of customers‟ satisfaction in the Malaysian for Halal cosmetics products. This study conceptualises consumption values as a multi-dimensional construct which consists of six dimensions of values, i.e. functional value, social value, emotional value, conditional value, epistemic value and religiosity value. This study examines both rational states and emotional states of the consumers by studying the relationships between consumption values, consumers‟ experience and customers‟ satisfaction toward Halal cosmetics product. The sampling consists of 359 Muslim and non-Muslim consumers from the urban states of Peninsular Malaysia which comprises Wilayah Persekutuan (KL, Putrajaya and Labuan), northern states (Perlis, Perak, Kedah and Pulau Pinang), southern states (Melaka and Johor), western states (Negeri Sembilan and Selangor), east coast (Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan), Sabah and Sarawak were collected and analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM PLS 3.0). Out of the 7 hypotheses tested, four are supported. The analysis revealed positive relationships between functional value, social value, emotional value and consumer experience value toward customer satisfaction for consuming the Halal cosmetics product. Furthermore the result also demonstrated that both Muslim and non-Muslim consumers are satisfied purchasing the Halal cosmetics product. The study also highlights the implications and limitations of the study as well as the suggestions for future research

Management of a Malaysian Hospitality Academic Programme: A Work-Based Learning Approach

    Get PDF
Leading one of the Entry Point Project (EPP) of the Economic Transformation Plan, Malaysia Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Education (MyCenTHE) shared the concept of work-based learning academic programme to the higher education providers (HEP) and hospitality industry in Malaysia as a mean to improve hospitality education, producing targeted qualified output of 50,000 personnel annually. The concept is new to the Malaysian education system that is governed by Malaysian Ministry of Education with Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as the guardian of tertiary education quality. Work-based learning concept introduced by MyCenTHE programme structure is different from the specific standards and guidelines set by MQA, thus, changes in the management of hospitality programmes is expected and is challenging having to comply to the standards and guidelines. This research paper aims to find out “How can the hospitality academic programme in Malaysia, in terms of programme delivery, be managed differently with the introduction of work-based learning (WBL)?” Qualitative research methodology is used for this research, utilising both descriptive and exploratory research methodology to study the topic, including the introduction of work-based learning, higher education quality, outcome-based education (OBE) and hospitality education in general. Interview with higher education provider, hotel establishments and participating students were conducted on the participant’s experience with work-based learning The research found that the introduction of work-based learning concept by MyCenTHE indeed has some influence on the hospitality and tourism education in Malaysia, however, the lack of clear guidance from MyCenTHE in managing work-based learning programme, even though it introduced the concept has resulted in the less successful implementation of the work-based learning hospitality academic programme. MQA published Guidelines of Good Practice: Work-based learning only in late 2015, with emphasis on assessment methodology, years after work-based learning is introduced. The guideline is also found not harmonise with Programme Standards: Hospitality and Tourism published earlier. After much exploration, the research concluded that there is least impact of work-based learning methodology to the industry, or the management of the education programme because it is not adopted by higher education provider, thus, it does not bring significant change to the delivery of programme in Malaysia. However, the research strongly recommends the higher education providers, that has interest to pursue the delivery method, to make efforts to study and benchmark those institutions in foreign countries who have successfully implement work-based learning prior to their implementation
