Empowerment Based Peatland Ecosystem Conservation for Fire Control and Environmental Conservation

    Get PDF
Peat ecosystems are a hydrological buffer and carbon stock that is very important for the environment. This ecosystem must be protected through conservation so that its function can be maintained. Conservation of peatland ecosystems means that emissions of very large amounts of carbon can be minimized. Conservation of peat areas in several places is increasingly important because it tends to decrease peat lands. Peatland conservation in Indonesia is regulated in Presidential Decree No. 32 of 1990 concerning protected areas. Protection of peat areas is intended to control the hydrology of the area, which functions as a water store and prevents flooding, as well as protecting the unique ecosystems in the area concerned. Peatlands have hydrological, biogeochemical, biodiversity protection and forest product production functions. Peat is also useful for preventing drought, flooding and mixing saltwater for irrigation in agricultural areas. But the benefits are lost because the peatlands are burning. Therefore, peatlands must avoid fires through the empowerment-based ecosystem conservation. The community empowerment approach becomes a strategic choice because in its implementation process it has optimized community participation, trying to improve the community’s ability to analyse conditions and the potential and problems that occur around peatlands. The empowerment approach also can formulate priority program options that are relevant to program objectives including fire control and environmental preservation. Conservation of peat land ecosystems based on empowerment means carrying out a conservation process by involving the community for the purpose of aid effectiveness, increasing the potential of the community, and increasing community contributions towards a sense of ownership and a sense of responsibility towards the sustainability of the program. Fire disasters in some parts of Indonesia are still a serious threat, as well as peatland shrinkage. The current study seeks to find evidence and solutions through descriptive qualitative studies in the provinces of East Kalimantan, North Sumatra and Aceh. The results of the study confirm that conservation of peatland ecosystems based on empowerment is a strategic approach

Social networking sites (SNSs) have simplified the way people communicate and interact with each other, in addition to the benefits of using social media, there are also privacy risks surrounding the posting of personal data details on social media. Furthermore, students are vulnerable to cyber security attacks because their account was created by his/her friend. This resulting, to a lot of weakness and poor risk management. Therefore, the primary goal of this research is to advance students’ intent while using social media through successful security and privacy-setting awareness. Four sub-objectives were investigated to reach the primary purpose of the study. The first sub objective was to investigate students’ awareness of security and privacy settings offered by social networking site providers. The second sub-goal of this study was to identify the impact of perceived training, value, attitude towards share, perceived benefit, and perceived severity attack on students’ intention to use security and privacy safety options in social media. The third sub-goal of this study was to identify the comprehensive approach to making the students use the security and privacy measures in Social Networking Sites (SNSs). The fourth sub-objective of this study was to propose a suitable model (framework) for promoting security and privacy protection measures in Social Networking Sites (SNSs). This research is based on already recognized models: the model Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). The researcher sought empirical suggestions for the validation of the theoretical model and hypotheses. A web-based survey instrument was developed that contains 45 –items survey using Likert-type scales. The target population of this study was undergraduate students at Mogadishu University (Freshman, sophomore, junior and senior). The sample for this study was 378 students with and high response rate. Descriptive analysis was used to accomplish the objectives of the study. The structural equation modeling technique was utilized to investigate both measurement model testing (reliability and validity) and structural models (hypotheses testing) to determine the factors influencing students’ intention to use security and privacy protection measures in social media by undergraduate students. A pilot study was conducted to get valuable feedback about the questionnaire, and the researcher tested the validity and reliability of the gathered data through the questionnaire. The Cronbach's alpha reliability score of each item (independent variables and dependent variable) exceeded the recommended value of 0.70. the range of level of internal reliability became between 0.939 and 0.818. this result illustrates that the measurement of the questionnaire items is reliable and can be used in the study. The results revealed that perceived training, severity attack, perceived value, perceived benefits, and attitude toward share have a positively related to students' intention to use security and privacy safety option in social networking sites (SNSs); perceived awareness was not significant to the student's intention to use security and privacy safety option

The main purpose of the study is to examine the effects of conflict management styles (integrating, obliging, compromising, dominating, avoiding) on stakeholders’ relationship quality in construction projects of Pakistan. The study further examined the moderating role of task conflict as the gap identified the little research on the effectiveness of conflict handling styles in a high or low level of conflict. The study has considerable importance from a practical aspect as it guides the project managers to know the effective way of dealing with conflict in different situations and when arises. For this quantitative study, a survey was conducted in July 2021 in construction companies of Pakistan through paper and web-based questionnaires. The target sample for the study was 400 including both male and female internal stakeholders. The results of this study demonstrate the positive effects of two approaches integrating and obliging in most situations and the negative effect of other styles dominating and avoiding also supported. Whereas the study doesn’t support the positive effect of compromising as it could involve losing the benefits and interests of stakeholders in a project. Furthermore, the study has confirmed the moderating effect of task conflict on the relationship between integrating and stakeholders’ relationship quality and avoiding and stakeholders’ relationship quality. The study is limited by its cross-sectional data and the data was collected only from internal stakeholders so the feedback of the study was restricted to only one party of a project. For further research on a similar line, it has been recommended that future studies should be conducted by incorporating the longitudinal research design and the responses should also be recorded by involving both internal and external stakeholders of the project. Also, the study recommended examining the effect of different combinations of conflict management styles on relationship quality

Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international comparative study that has been implemented by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achieve¬ment (IEA) since 1995. This proposed study is aimed to identify the correlations of science classroom teachings with eighth graders' science achievement in TIMSS among Southeast Asian and East Asian countries. The freely downloadable secondary data were analyzed using IEA's International Database (IDB) Analyzer (version 4.0) for TIMSS, a plug-in for SPSS. TIMSS uses an imputation methodology, involving plausible values, to report student performance. This study found that countries with higher average science achievement allocated higher percentage of educational hours for science teaching, students were taught the TIMSS science topics, students attended schools with science laboratories and have assistance available when conducting experiments, computer availability during science lessons, with science teachings were not limited by student needs, and less frequency of student absences. Based on the research findings, policy recommendations were made to the Malaysian Ministry of Education to boost Malaysian eighth graders' science performance in the forthcoming TIMSS assessments

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are traditionally seen as society’s robust institutions but are currently experiencing new difficulties as a result of shifts in both government and society’s expectations of their roles as education providers. There is a global call for new models and practices which need HEIs in the private sector to develop what was once business-oriented management competencies. Hence this study addressed the global call for HEIs in Malaysia to be more entrepreneurial and explored the experiences of entrepreneurs who had ventured into the education industry with the aims of business diversification, capacity building, lifelong education and nation-building. The qualitative study explored the context of private universities in Malaysia which included the socio-historical background and experience of seven founders, and their management approaches in establishing their HEIs as successful, sustainable and respectable education providers. A grounded theory approach was adopted to gather data through in-depth interviews with the participants. Their emic perspectives of the challenges and opportunities experienced while managing their respective universities was analysed thematically. The findings revealed that new ventures into private higher education must be spearheaded by individuals with entrepreneurial leadership who would be able to develop and enhance the dynamic capabilities necessary for successfully managing a university. These leaders must also capitalize on the opportunities available and form a team of agile and resilient staff who can withstand and manage changes in the environment. The study also provides a guideline for managing private universities in a more cost-effective manner

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate migration, remittances, and socioeconomic effects of Myanmar migration workers’ families left behind in Mon State, Myanmar. A combined quantitative and qualitative approach was used. A survey was conducted on 494 respondents from the left-behind families by using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 informants to explore the experiences of migrant families. It was found that the common reasons for overseas employment were lack of job opportunities, not having enough earnings, and difficulty in finding jobs relevant to education. Thailand is the major destination country, followed by Malaysia and South Korea while the least amount of remittances was sent by the migrants from Thailand. The majority of families used Hundi as their main remittance transaction channel. After migration, both financial assets and perception on economic indicators improved significantly. Family perception on social indicators has significantly become better; however psychological problems are found to be worse off after migration. It can be concluded that international labour migration has economically and socially benefited to the migrant families; however psychologically detrimental to a large extent. The narratives of informants produced three themes ̶ migration as conventional choice; migration as misery; and migration as success. Labour migration is a major livelihood of the families and provides positive financial and economic effects, making them to assume migration works as success. Negative psychosocial consequences to left-behind spouses, elderly, and children in the families pushing them to assume migration works as misery. With the two strands of migration effects, engaging in safe migration practices and arranging social welfare and protection policies for migrants and their left-behind families are major challenges faced by Myanmar. In addition, creating local employment opportunities of young and working age people and preparing them for job relevant skills through technical vocational education training are priority areas to be focused on to escape from migration tra
