    No full text
This paper proposes to analyse the development of livestock farming in the Jesuit Guaraní doc-trines as a fundamental source of food for their inhabitants through a historical evolution of several stages, starting with the acquisition by purchase or donation and herding to the villages, passing through the search for cattle in the va-querías and finally the breeding of cattle under Jesuit administration.

This study demonstrates that Father José del Rey Fajardo; S.J. is the most important Venezuelan ecclesiastical historian of all time. The distinction between Church History and ecclesiastical history allows for understanding what is written in Venezuela, including authors, themes, and books from the 18th to the 21st century. Within this framework lies Father del Rey¨s voluminous written work, focused on the History of the Society of Jesus and its implications in linguistics, geography, ethnology, education, and particularly in the missions of the plains and the Orinoco.

Within historiography it is commendable to know the evangelizers of our people, and these are not only framed at the beginning of the Hispanic period. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, we also find excellent examples that left a deep mark on the lives of many, among them is Fray José Zapico, OP. Dominican friar from Spain who, during the first half of the 20th century, forged his life as a missionary in the Venezuelan region of Barlovento, specifically in the town of San José de Barlovento, for almost three decades. His dedication and effort was so great that, even today, he is known by its inhabitants as the “Apostle of Barlovento” and the intercessor of his needs before God. From the construction of the town's church by his own hands to fully living charity among its inhabitants, this is what is fascinating about this Dominican friar who died in the odor of holiness.
