Od satyry do naturalizmu – krótkometrażowa filmografia Ante Babai

This article aims to analyze and interpret Ante Babaja’s short films (both fiction and documentary). These works can be seen as a kind of laboratory of themes and means of expression representative of the Croatian director’s work. The reconstruction undertaken reveals the evolution of Babaja’s artistic path, which can be simply described as a shift from a satirical to a naturalistic form of representation. Both tendencies are synthesized in later feature-length productions, along with a number of artistic devices specific to Babaja’s work. This article aims to analyze and interpret Ante Babaja’s short films (both fiction and documentary). The Archetypal Character of Eve: A Comparative Overview of Modern Czech, French and Canadian Literatures

There are very few archetypal characters being more important for European cultural tradition than the Biblical first woman – Eve. As evidenced by literary onomastic research, the very use of semantically loaded first names implies intertextual connectedness, fulfilling – in most cases – associative and symbolic functions. This reference to archetypal stories and heroes makes it possible to create a multitude of new semantic layers, but it also serves to keep their original sense in cultural and collective memory. In our contribution, we seek comparative analysis and interpretation of selected characters, bearing the name of Eve, in modern French, Canadian and Czech literatures. The study focuses on variants, shifts, and similarities that, to varying extents, refer to the first Biblical woman. Throughout both the national literatures, we observe forms of the pretext−posttext relation and concrete onymic functions of the name of Eve in the time span from the close of the 19th century to the present day

The paper discusses the role and the importance of the “Biser” magazine as a medium of the idea of education among Bosnian Muslims with its progressive values and emancipatory concept. We will describe the socio-political circumstances caused by the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by Austria-Hungary in 1878, its annexation in 1908 and the situation of Muslims in this new reality. We also identify the most important institutions as tools for the education of Bosnian Muslims. So too are the conditions of the creation of the “Biser” magazine, its significant assumptions and goals. Main attention was paid to the presented religious values and dogmas of Islam and their impact on the emancipation of the Bosnian community. We conclude that this magazine has great merits for Bosnian Muslims, both in spreading awareness of the importance of education among them, promoting the ideas of enlightenment, progressive values and modernization, as well as emancipation. The paper discusses the role and the importance of the “Biser” magazine as a medium of the idea of education among Bosnian Muslims with its progressive values and emancipatory concept. The paper analyzes motives and messages neglected by literary historians in two short travelogues by Bulgarian national poet Ivan Vazov: One of Our Black Sea Pearls (1891) and On the Waves of the Black Sea (1921). The author reassesses the idea of the cities’ ties with Bulgarian tradition, examples of nationalistic attitudes, as well as the persistent approach to mythologizing the national future. The key conclusions are that the texts abound in examples of nationalistic speech; modernization of the two cities is conceived of as a) Europeanisation, and b) as economic development (with particular emphasis on the ports); the two texts reveal Vazov among the first Bulgarian writers to see the role of tourism as a guarantee of prosperity; the writer gives ethnic Bulgarians the wishful role of civilizing colonists; the development of the Black Sea region implies a change in the ethnic structure of the population. The paper analyzes motives and messages neglected by literary historians in two short travelogues by Bulgarian national poet Ivan Vazov: One of Our Black Sea Pearls (1891) and On the Waves of the Black Sea (1921). „Przekleństwo” nauczania w przysłowiach polskich

The article discusses proverbs negatively evaluating the work of teachers as recorded in paremiographical dictionaries of the Polish language of the 19th and 20th centuries. The socio-historical context of this profession in Poland from its inception to the beginning of the 20th century is presented, and the literary and textual uses of the units in question are analysed. The history of the profession fully justifies the negative evaluation contained in the proverbs. The attestations of usage in corpus and Internet resources of contemporary Polish indicate that this assessment is still valid. The most widely used proverb in recent decades is Obyś cudze dzieci uczył!, as well as the phraseological expression derived from it, cudze dzieci uczyć. The noted modifications of some analysed units are an example of contesting the negative image of the teaching profession fixed in this stock of the Polish language. The article discusses proverbs negatively evaluating the work of teachers as recorded in paremiographical dictionaries of the Polish language of the 19th and 20th centuries. Full text link
The article is devoted to mathematical knowledge in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This fragment of the linguistic worldview of the inhabitants of the GDL is modelled on the basis of the other authors’ works and the study of the relevant Ruthenian vocabulary. It is argued that education was widespread due to the multi-confessionalism of the GDL. Ruthenian names for counting and measurement, selected from the dictionaries of the Old Belarusian and Old Ukrainian languages, are considered in the article as a lexical-semantic field with several groups: numbers, arithmetic concepts and operations; units of measurements, weight, currency; types of profits, benefits, taxes. It is concluded that, according to the Ruthenian language, mathematical knowledge in the GDL is represented by: 1) arithmetic concepts and operations; 2) applied knowledge related to agriculture, handicrafts, trade, and social organisation of society; 3) abstract mathematical concepts, denoted by Latin borrowings

The subject of this review is Dimitrina Hamze’s book Gender Culture in Proverbs (Based on Material from Polish and Bulgarian Paremiology) – a valuable contributionto the interpretation of the elements of the cultural code related to the universal issues of male-female relations. Based on a multidisciplinary approach, the author (Associate Professor in Polish language and culture at Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv), reveals the dynamic nature of the axiological meaning of proverbs. The most important results of the profound analysis carried out in the book include: exploring semantic zones of evaluation in the proverbs under investigation (beauty, love, marriage, infidelity, age, intelligence, etc.); recognition of the crypto-evaluative level of proverbial meaning that can stand in contrast to the explicit message; the author’s well-justified conclusion that stereotypes in gender-related proverbs appeal to overcoming rather than strengthening stigmatizing evaluation. The subject of this review is Dimitrina Hamze’s book Gender Culture in Proverbs (Based on Material from Polish and Bulgarian Paremiology) – a valuable contributionto the interpretation of the elements of the cultural code related to the universal issues of male-female relations.
