Literary Collectors as Literary Scribes: The Case of Đuro Ferić (1739–1820)

    Get PDF
The essay reconstructs the scribal collection of Ragusan literature compiled by Đuro Ferić (1739–1820) and currently scattered across various libraries. It argues that the focus on individual scribes is the best way of understanding Ragusan manuscript culture and of identifying relationships among different manuscript witnesses. Once scribal collections are reconstructed, it is possible to determine to what extent scribes understood their job as involving specific editorial decisions rather than just mechanical copying of the text in front of them. The approach is recommended not just to scholars interested in manuscript culture but to those interested in the larger questions of literary history as well. The essay reconstructs the scribal collection of Ragusan literature compiled by Đuro Ferić (1739–1820) and currently scattered across various libraries. Some Belarusian philosophical-allegoric novel renewal periods have been studied closely with the emphases on the historic, social and cultural heritage of different epochs. In the article, the decisive role of the Enlightenment French philosophical prose is noted in the development of the modern Belarusian philosophical-allegoric novel. The Enlightenment French philosophical-allegoric text is a model of reality, simple for understanding, with a fascinating adventure story, but with an obscure moral and philosophical attitude and didacticism. The 18th century philosophical-allegoric prose is distinguished by the parable form of narrative, which is characterized by moral and philosophical problems, global questions about the life and destiny of people, marked by didacticism, by a high degree of generalization, and the obligatory projection of the idea on the reader views. The article proves the influence of Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Diderot’ philosophical works on the development of the modern philosophical-allegoric novel in Belarusian literature. The article analyzes the poetics of Belarusian contemporary works of this genre taking into account the French traditions of the Enlightenment. Some Belarusian philosophical-allegoric novel renewal periods have been studied closely with the emphases on the historic, social and cultural heritage of different epochs. In this article, we reconstructed a generalized image of Poland and Poles within the framework of the multidisciplinary concept of “mental mapping”. The most popular daily newspaper of Napoleon’s time “Journal de l’Empire” (1804–1814) used distinctive linguistic markers of the Enlightenment to depict Poland and its inhabitants in French society, such as, “civilization”, “barbarity”, “culture”, “tradition” (“religion”), “childhood of nation”. Content analysis has been applied as an auxiliary method to the press sources which allowed to determine the nature and the impact of political propaganda on the public imagination. In this article, we reconstructed a generalized image of Poland and Poles within the framework of the multidisciplinary concept of “mental mapping”. Aleksander Antoni Sapieha has gone down in the history of Polish science, he is one of the episodic figures in the political history of our country in the Napoleonic era; and in the history of Polish literature he appears as the author of the Enlightenment travelogue. The reading of Journey around the Slav countries in the years 1802 and 1803 and the semantically defined narrator-hero-real author on the basis of hermeneutic interpretation is an attempt to supplement the ways in which both, the travel book and its creator, are discussed in Polish scientific and popular science literature about those aspects that can be derived from the text itself. Among them, attention is paid to the specificity of a research attitude stretched, so to speak, between its two complementary pars, rational and idealistic, combined in a particular pragmatism of knowledge, in which the pursuit of cognition accompanies the pursuit of common good. The result of the hermeneutic experience of reading Sapiehaʼs travelogue is an attempt to capture his scientific and social heritage which takes into consideration the plane of this internally doubled, yet coherent research attitude, which in a broader sense seems to be surprisingly fresh and inspiring.Aleksander Antoni Sapieha has gone down in the history of Polish science, he is one of the episodic figures in the political history of our country in the Napoleonic era; and in the history of Polish literature he appears as the author of the Enlightenment travelogue. The article is concerned with the Infant Jesus cult in the life and work of Anica Bošković (1714––1804), one of a few Croat women authoresses of Dubrovnik in the century of Enlightenment. The Infant Jesus cult was linked in the past in Croatia with Franciscan communities, in older Polish culture, too. The family Bošković had a little figure of Infant Jesus named Bambin, beloved by all the people and famous by miracles. Anica Bošković wrote about Him many time: her deeply implanted devotion reflects in letters to her brother Ruđer, in her last will and in her poetic works, especially in Razgovor pastirski vrhu porođenja Gospodinova. Anica Bošković has conceived a preface to this work – letter dedicated to her brothers Ruđer and Baro, in which speaks about her inspirations and dreams. This work is a concept of construction of inner world of every woman who wants to love God more then other people. Poetic world of Anica Bošković reflects her faith, fantasy and it is built on hard religions and moral foundation. The article is concerned with the Infant Jesus cult in the life and work of Anica Bošković (1714–1804), one of a few Croat women authoresses of Dubrovnik in the century of Enlightenment. The drama activities carried out in the period 1759–1781 on school stage of the Basilian College of Buchach helped to transfer the standards applied in the Enlightenment era to the gentry at the periphery of the former Polish Republic. The Enlightenment trends were evidenced by the observed tendencies in building theatre repertoires. Undoubtedly, the Basilian monks made use of the oeuvre of Jesuit and Piarist stages. Following the Enlightenment ideals, they attempted to impart civic and moralizing significance to the performances, in line with the slogan “teaching by entertaining”.The drama activities carried out in the period 1759–1781 on school stage of the Basilian College of Buchach helped to transfer the standards applied in the Enlightenment era to the gentry at the periphery of the former Polish Republic. Obrona wysiłków daremnych – Joanna Rapacka i badania historii literatury chorwackiej

The article analyses two methods from the scholarly oeuvre of a great Polish Croatian and Slavic studies scholar Joanna Rapacka (1939–2000). These two methods are very interesting and in a particular manner topical, especially in Croatian philology: due to a reconstruction of historical poetics and research of sources, and because of a deconstruction of national myths and national essentialism in literary historiography. These two approaches are closely linked in an attempt to understand an older, pre-modern literary culture in its original, epochal context. The article analyses two methods from the scholarly oeuvre of a great Polish Croatian and Slavic studies scholar Joanna Rapacka (1939–2000).
