    India in the Imagination of 20th and 21st Century Croatian Literature

    The purpose of this paper is to study perceptions of India in three literary works, from the 20th and 21st century. The first part looks into the tenets of postcolonial theory and literary imagology as a possible methodological framework. Subsequently, premodern perceptions of India in the Croatian literary and cultural space are summarised. The central analysis focuses on the historical novelJaša Dalmatin (Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gujarat) by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, the travelogue U potrazi za staklenim gradom (In Search of the Glass City) by Željko Malnar and Borna Bebek, and the short story Indija (India) by Bekim Sejranović. The analysis demonstrates that each of these writings reconstructs premodern perceptions to some extent, but primarily introduces new perceptions that are linked to the specific social, cultural and ideological context in which these works were written. This indicates that literary perceptions are at the same time always acts of literary fiction as well as a socially and culturally construed production of meaning

    Traditionally, the basic qualities of imagology are associated with its key category—the literary ethnic character. A special field of imagological improvisations is the Serbian novel, which, according to well-known national experience and specific genre features, is favorable for ethnic panoramic imagological reactions, especially when it comes to the mid-20th – early 21st century. The aimof the research is to single out in chronological supposition the poetics of the literary presentation of the phenomenon of Ukraine in the Serbian novelistic discourse at the turn of the millennium. The research is based on comparative, comparative-typological, imagological methods in combination with approaches of structural-semantic and archetypal analysis. In the stated imagological perspective, the novels by I. Andrić, M. Crnjanski, M. Oljača, M. Selimović, G. Petrović, M. Prodanović and М. Pavić are analyzed. The works highlight semantic accents that emphasize the positive imagological view of Ukraine from its foreign ethnic reception, formed in genetically related – Serbian – literature, the tolerance of the Serbian people in creating subjective ethnic panoramas, indispensable for the evolutionary enrichment of intercultural communication based on epistemological heritage.Traditionally, the basic qualities of imagology are associated with its key category—the literary ethnic character.     The aim of the article is to present the image of the body in relation to nature appearing in statements of the supporters of alternative health theories, as well as the processes of mythization of nature. The research material consists of statements by members of discussion groups on Facebook, and the research methodology—tools of anthropological and cognitive linguistics. The first part of the article discusses the changes in the dominant paradigm of perception of the relationship between the body and nature, the second part contains a brief description of the research methods, and the third part is the analysis of the material.The aim of the article is to present the image of the body in relation to nature appearing in statements of the supporters of alternative health theories, as well as the processes of mythization of nature.     The article attempts to present selected prose works by Damir Miloš as an example of Croatian maritime literature and ecological writing. In the posthumanist view, the symbiosis of man and nature constitutes a postpastoral attempt to return to Arcadia. In Miloš’s prose, ecopoetics is manifested in J. F. Lyotard’s idea of “house-building” ( oikon and poesis ), which is currently also discussed by other researchers, in the harmony of the human and the world of nature, as well as in the perspective of pansociologism, according to which “everything is society,” and all existence means “entering into interactions,” and, lastly, in the optics of Bruno Latour’s hyperhumanism. The element of the sea ( its flora and fauna) in an ecocritical approach is characterised by liquidity, ambiguity as well as transgression and liminality ( between the world of nature and culture ).     Easternisation and Enlightenment. Larry Wolff, Marquis de Ségur and the Younger Europe

    The article describes two accounts of Poland and the culture of its people. The first of these dates from 1784 and was written by the Marquis de Ségur, a French diplomat travelling to St Petersburg. The second, from 1840, was written by the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, at the time working as a professor at the Collège de France in Paris. I try to show the most important differences between the Enlightenment and Romantic images of Poland. An important context is provided by Larry Wolff’s monograph, which 30 years ago initiated a new phase in research on the European invention of Eastern Europe

    Serbian traveler Milan Jovanović arrived in China in the 19th century, and after his return, his travelogue Tamo amo po istoku (Here and There in the East) was published. This article aims to reveal Jovanović’s perception of China in his writings, in order to analyze the image of China and more importantly, his dilemmas of self–positioning while facing the East and the West. By applying comparative literary imagery theory and cross–cultural methods, this paper interprets the literal value of Jovanović’s work, and discusses the interactions between the East and the West, as well as the “self” and the “others.” This article argues that Jovanović’s self–affirmation is faced with two “others”: the heterogenous “other” of Eurocentrism, and the homogenous “other” of Eastern utopia.     This paper outlines the main reading strategies of ecocriticism. Its main theoretical interest lies not in the pure extraction of literary motifs of Nature, but in the deconstruction of the diversity between Nature and Culture, representing Nature as the postmodern significant “Other” relating to contemporary environmental problems and thus exposing literary approaches in the past ( includingpostmodernism ) as anthropocentric. The main part of this paper focuses on the example of the application of ecocritical strategies in Đuro Sudeta’s modernist and impressionistic novella Mor, which leads to the suggestion of reforming conventional readings in traditional literary history

    The interpretation of Vasyl′ Tkachuk’s stories from an ecocritical point of view showcases new aspects of understanding the prose legacy of this remarkable writer. Of course, the true love for the Hutsul region, one that the “proud” Hutsul people live in harmony with, one that, unlike in the works of Vasyl′ Stefanyk, is not only the cause of the Hutsul people’s extreme poverty but is sincerely loved and praised by them, is not the only merit of Tkachuk’s stories. Ecocritical dimensions of the “humble rural pictures, so touching to the core” ( Mykhaylo Rudnytskyi ) imply certain aspects of the critical literary analysis of Tkachuk’snovels, such as ethno national identity of the author and his characters, unbreakable unitywith the traditions of ancestors, apotheosis of the soil—one that not only feeds but is also responsible for the unique “national spirit” of the Carpathian highlanders, ecological awareness of the old Hutsul people and the philosophical layer of the literary legacy of the author.The interpretation of Vasyl′ Tkachuk’s stories from an ecocritical point of view showcases new aspects of understanding the prose legacy of this remarkable writer.     The article presents the imaginary structure of The Bay of Kotor in selected works ( the novels: Latajući Bokelj [Wandering Bokelj], Jedro nade [Sail of Hope] and the collection of short stories Prugastoplave storije [Striped Blue Stories]) by Nikola Malović, as well as the issues of ideological consequences of this literary creation, in which the region becomes a metonymy for the problems of the modern world. The story of the Bokelian identityis a story about rooting, about space treated as oikos, and about a man as one of the elements of this system. In Malović’s reflection, the awareness of the writer’s place of origin is combined with the awarenessof responsibility for it.
