Spory wokół języka słoweńskiego i ich wpływ na kształt literatury słoweńskiej w okresie romantyzmu

The article aims to explore the status of the Slovene language and literature, as well as Slovene culture during the Romantic period in the context of historical events which informed them as a result of the creation of the alphabet by Adam Bohorič in the 16th century. During the 19th century, in Slovenia an “orthographic war” was being waged. Its goal was to establish the one and correct version of the alphabet and the definitive spelling rules for the Slovene language. The debate about language erupted between the group under the leadership of Matia Čop (of which France Prešeren was a member) and the followers of Jernej Kopitar. The dispute involved a number of issues connected to Slovene literature and culture, and the status of Slovenia in Europe. Arguments in the debate were exchanged via publications, (e.g. Slovenska abecedna vojska), poetry (Satirical Sonnets and epigrams) and engaged a wide spectrum of topics such as the dialects of the Slovene language or literary criticism. The article aims to explore the status of the Slovene language and literature, as well as Slovene culture during the Romantic period in the context of historical events which informed them as a result of the creation of the alphabet by Adam Bohorič in the 16th century. In this paper I analyze one of the first collections of poems for children in the SCBM language, Niz dragocijenoga bisera ili Duhovne i moralne pjesme za djecu by Jovan Sundečić (Zadar 1856, Cetinje 1865). Although many have stated that it is one of the first original publications intended for children and young readers of the South Slavic area, there has been no detailed analysis of it until now. In the introductory part of the paper, I will look at the circumstances which led to creation of literature for children and young people, in the central part, through the analysis of Sundečić’s book, I will show why Romanticism in children’s literature inevitably intertwined with Enlightenment, and I will try to illuminate the socio-historical circumstances that led to the reprint. In the conclusion, I make an evaluation of the book from the viewpoint of Romanticism, as the period in which it was created, as well as the contemporary moment, which tends to mark the timeless literary qualities. In this paper I analyze one of the first collections of poems for children in the SCBM language, Niz dragocijenoga bisera ili Duhovne i moralne pjesme za djecu by Jovan Sundečić (Zadar 1856, Cetinje 1865). The “Archaeology” of Popular Culture: Common Sense and the Past

This paper demonstrates the influence of common sense on the perception of facts from the past. In order to understand the mechanisms of reduction, instrumentalisation and banalisation of the Holocaust in popular culture, we need to understand the influence of common sense on the understanding and misunderstanding of the past, represented in this paper by the testimonies of the massacre of 1500 Jews in the forest of Niesłusz-Rudzica.The main premise of the paper is that common sense is the dominant form of knowledge and the description of reality, which is reproduced by the mechanisms at function in popular culture. This paper is an example of ‘archaeological’ work in this context

History and Literature in the Historical Novels of Ksaver Šandor Gjalski

The paper begins by asserting that the historical novels of Ksaver Šandor Gjalski have received special treatment in Croatian literary historiography, which tends to ascribe to them a more a documentary and historiographic rather than literary value. This paper will analyse the Romantic, realist and modernist features of Gjalski’s historical novels Osvit. Slike iz tridesetih godina (Dawn. Pictures from the [18]30s) (1892) and Za materinsku riječ. Slike iz četrdeset osme godine (For the Maternal Word. Pictures from [18]48) (1906). In the light of theories of histories as stories (narratives), this paper will indicate that their so-called documentary value is attributable to literary strategies that are used to interpret the past they represent in a specific way, and not to record what is assumed to be the authentic past

This article introduces some examples of the wide range of texts and shows their form and content. Finally, the article seeks to point outsome aspects that make it worthwhile to take a closer look at these texts from a literary and didactic point of view and to investigate whether some of these texts, which have been largely ignored by literary and didactic studies so far, may be used for educational purposes.E-book platforms, such as Wattpad (wattpad.com) offer authors and readers, often rather young, the opportunity to publish their own stories on a wide varietyof topics and in different genre categories, e.g., fanfiction, time travel, love stories. Skazani na imperium. Wizja rosyjskiej drogi dziejowej w Jeźdźcu miedzianym Aleksandra Puszkina

The article is an attempt to explore the vision of Russian history in Alexander Pushkin’s The Bronze Horseman. The key role in the poem is played by the figure of Peter I, who is shown as a despot on the one hand, and a bold visionary on the other. In The Bronze Horseman, Pushkin presents a suggestive image of the flood in St. Petersburg, referring to such problems as the clash between an ordinary man and history or the essence of rebellions and revolutions. Deciphering the meaning of individual motifs allows us to perceive Pushkin’s coherent and multidimensional historiosophical vision. The main conclusion of the article is the statement that Russian imperialism in The Bronze Horseman is shown as an organic element of Russianness, without which Russia could not have formed as a strong and modern state. Moreover, the poem can invariably be seen as a key to understanding the essence and vitality of Russian imperialism. The article is an attempt to explore the vision of Russian history in Alexander Pushkin’s The Bronze Horseman. The Holocaust between Pop Literature and High Literature: Maxim Biller’s Inside the Head of Bruno Schulz

Maxim Biller, one of the most prominent, but also most controversial German-Jewish authors, is an important figure in modern Holocaust literature. After a short introduction to his early journalistic and literary oeuvre dealing with the Holocaust, we will focus on his novella Inside the Head of Bruno Schulz from 2013. A short outline of the story will be followed by a detailed analysis of therole the Holocaust plays in this story, especially with regard to the two protagonists, Bruno Schulz and Thomas Mann. It will be shown that the pop-literary provocations that dominate Billers’ early works, are now displaced by clear tendencies towards a high literary, artistic standard, which are characteristic for the developments of modern Holocaust literature in general
