The Subjunctive as a Model of Grammatical Complexity: An Integrative Review of Issues Based on Combined Evidence from Mental Chronometry and Neurosciences
International audienceThe acquisition of a second language requires the construction or reconstruction of linguistic knowledge about the new language system. Learners of a second language have to acquire the linguistic structures of the second language by constructing or reassessing their own knowledge in the light of the new one. Some of these new linguistic structures may be more or less complex to process and/or difficult to acquire. In this review, we focus on an example of linguistic complexity in French, namely, the subjunctive. Through a discussion of some selected studies on the second language acquisition of the French subjunctive, our purpose is to argue that these findings, considered from a psycholinguistic perspective, could be fruitful for further research employing neuroscience techniques, such as electroencephalography or neuroimaging in order to better understand the neurocognitive processing of this complex structure both in French native speakers and in learners of French. Hence, we aim to contribute to exploring the question of linguistic transfer in the field of second language acquisition, the typological distance/relation between L1–L2, the syntactic acquisition of complex structures in adult second language learners, and the potential contributions of electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging to the processing of the subjunctive, selected as an example of linguistic complexity that has not yet received much attention
The earliest unambiguous Neanderthal engravings on cave walls: La Roche-Cotard, Loire Valley, France
International audienceHere we report on Neanderthal engravings on a cave wall at La Roche-Cotard (LRC) in central France, made more than 57±3 thousand years ago. Following human occupation, the cave was completely sealed by cold-period sediments, which prevented access until its discovery in the 19 th century and first excavation in the early 20 th century. The timing of the closure of the cave is based on 50 optically stimulated luminescence ages derived from sediment collected inside and from around the cave. The anthropogenic origin of the spatially-structured, non-figurative marks found within the cave is confirmed using taphonomic, traceological and experimental evidence. Cave closure occurred significantly before the regional arrival of H . sapiens , and all artefacts from within the cave are typical Mousterian lithics; in Western Europe these are uniquely attributed to H . neanderthalensis . We conclude that the LRC engravings are unambiguous examples of Neanderthal abstract design
Investigating the effect of process parameters for fused filament fabrication
International audienceFused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is a promising technology that is largely developed in small series, as this technology optimizes supply chains by reducing production time and costs. However, its shortcomings have slowed its adoption as a dominant production technology. Among its weaknesses, this work focuses on geometric and dimensional accuracy within tolerance range. There is a need for understanding the sources of geometrical inaccuracies and for methods of characterizing them, in order to modify the input parameters to eventually obtain the desired geometry. This work first focuses on the geometric and dimensional accuracy of parts printed by the FFF process by studying the influence of the inner radius of a cylindrical part, the type of material and the type of filling pattern. The levels with the greatest dimensional dispersion are the largest radius, the nylon material, and the hexagonal filling pattern. Secondly, a defect characterization method associated with a parametric mathematical model is developed. The 3D scanner enables the retrieval of the coordinates of the printed geometry; this allows to characterize the errors with respect to the theoretical 3D model and to modelize the printed part by a series of ellipses of which we obtain the analytical equations, as a first step of a correction process

Les Écritures du « je » en recherche-création: De possibles anti-projets ?
International audienceWhilst the idea of a project would appear to assume what the object of the thesis will presume as the thesis' final form and purpose, in research-creation this notion is sometimes challenged. In what way does this type of research question the notion of project, in its sometimes contradictory link to the future? Research-creation requires us to witness the processes that inhabit us, as we become observers and creators. Focus turns towards thought movements, while momentarily abandoning the end result. Naturally, deviating is part of any research work; the difference lies in the valorization of mechanisms that normally remain hidden, as material for thinking. Through the study of two literary works, De Cendres et de braises (2019) by Manon Ott, and of xx.com (2020) by Jean Gilbert, I wish to show that research-creation, in particular in literature, allows us to consider becoming, with its own configurations.

"Orale Ursprünge und früheste Formen in Vorderorient und Mittelmeerraum," in : Paradigmen -Poetiken -Geschichte, ed. Stefan Elit and Kai Bremer (Stuttgart: J. B. Metzler, 2023), 3-20
International audienceThe cuneiform sources from the 3rd to the end of the first millennium BC provide the earliest evidence for a tradition of verse epic, which includes such famous works of world literature as the Epic of Gilgamesh. The poetic narratives from this time derive from multitude of overlapping cultures and languages. The chapter attempts an overview and comparison of the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, and Ugaritic epics traditions. Individual sections focus on the historical development, external factors of transmission such as the roll of writing and orality in shaping the tradition, formal aspects, and conceptual history
