Hegel, la Dialectique du Maitre et de l’Esclave et la Révolution de Saint-Domingue
No full textDocument de travail en lien avec mes recherches doctoralesOn November 18, 1803, a battle fought by the insurgents of Saint-Domingue, pushed back the most powerful army of Hegel's time, and put an end to Napoleon Bonaparte's attempt to restore slavery on the island. This constitutes, for many commentators, one of the most original feats of universal history, since it was a "spectacular achievement of slaves who, by overthrowing the old order of things, managed to organize to [….] transform into real men, into a nation-state when we know that shortly before the uprising, thousands of slaves could tremble before a single white man” (Claudy Delné, 2013: 56). Thus, many authors recognize that “the Haitian revolution reinforced tendencies towards slave insurrections and revolts in the 19th century throughout the Caribbean and the Americas in general” (Laënnec Hurbon, 2009: 65-75). A large number of recent studies are unanimous in maintaining that the Haitian revolution is a landmark event, like the face that “constantly comes back to haunt Western modernity” despite attempts to marginalize it. It is in this order of ideas that Tavares and Buck-Morss see in it the main historical source of the famous “figure of conscience” of Hegel, the crucible and “the trial by fire for the ideals of the French Enlightenment. And any European who was part of the bourgeois reading public knew it” (Susan Buck-Morss, 2009: 44). But Hegel seems to seek, according to Matthieu Renault among others, to hide and conceal these abolitionist Caribbean sources, "if only to better philosophically cancel the potentially subversive effects of this reality in order to better suppress it" (Matthieu Renault, 2021: 21 -32).Le 18 novembre 1803, une bataille livrée par les insurgés de Saint-Domingue, fait reculer la plus puissante armée du temps de Hegel, et met fin à la tentative de Napoléon Bonaparte de rétablir l'esclavage sur l'Ile. Cela constitue, pour de nombreux commentateurs, une des prouesses les plus originales de l'histoire universelle, puisqu'il s'agissait d'une « réalisation spectaculaire des esclaves qui, en renversant l'ordre ancien des choses, parvenaient à s'organiser pour [….] se transformer en de vrais hommes, en État-nation lorsqu'on sait, que peu avant la veille du soulèvement, des milliers d'esclaves pouvaient trembler devant un seul blanc » (Claudy Delné, 2013 : 56). Ainsi nombreux sont les auteurs à reconnaitre que « la révolution haïtienne a renforcé les tendances aux insurrections et révoltes d'esclaves au XIXe siècle à travers la Caraïbe et les Amériques en général » (Laënnec Hurbon, 2009 : 65-75). Un grand nombre d'études récentes sont unanimes à soutenir que la révolution haïtienne est un évènement marquant, comme la face qui « sans cesse revient hanter la modernité occidentale » malgré les tentatives de la marginaliser. C'est dans cette ordre d'idées que Tavares et Buck-Morss y voient la principale source historique de la fameuse « figure de la conscience » de Hegel, le creuset et « l'épreuve du feu pour les idéaux des Lumières françaises. Et tout Européen qui faisait partie du public des lecteurs bourgeois le savait » (Susan Buck-Morss, 2009 : 44). Mais Hegel semble chercher, selon Matthieu Renault entre autres, à cacher et à dissimuler ces sources caraïbéennes abolitionnistes, « ne serait-ce que pour mieux annuler philosophiquement les effets potentiellement subversifs de cette réalité pour mieux la supprimer » (Matthieu Renault, 2021 : 21-32)
Cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to PEL Rapoport-Zink spaces with signature (1,n-1)
No full textThe study of the cohomology of Shimura varieties and of Rapoport-Zink spaces should unveil a close relationship with global and local Langlands correspondences respectively. This cohomology is in principle difficult to understand, because of the complexity inherent to the geometry of these spaces. Nonetheless, there is a certain class of Rapoport-Zink spaces, called "of Coxeter type", which exhibit a very concrete stratification by Deligne-Lusztig varieties whose combinatorics is described by the Bruhat-Tits building of an underlying p-adic group. Deligne-Lusztig varieties have been studied independently in the context of representation theory of finite groups of Lie type, a field in which their cohomology plays an essential role. In this thesis, we suggest to use the litterature on the cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties in order to draw the consequences on the cohomology of Rapoport-Zink spaces of Coxeter type. We apply this strategy to the cases of the PEL unitary Rapoport-Zink spaces of signature (1,n-1) at a ramified or unramified prime. This original approach allowed us to discover new phenomena, such as the non-admissibility in general of the cohomology of these Rapoport-Zink spaces, and the computation of the cohomology of the supersingular locus of the associated Shimura varieties for low values of nL'étude de la cohomologie des variétés de Shimura et des espaces de Rapoport-Zink devrait révéler des liens étroits avec les correspondances de Langlands, respectivement globales et locales. Cette cohomologie est en principe difficile à comprendre, en raison de la complexité inhérente à la géométrie de ces espaces. Néanmoins, il existe une certaine classe d'espaces de Rapoport-Zink, appelés "de type Coxeter", qui admettent une stratification très concrète par des variétés de Deligne-Lusztig dont la combinatoire est décrite par l'immeuble de Bruhat-Tits d'un groupe p-adique sous-jacent. Les variétés de Deligne-Lusztig ont été étudiées indépendamment dans le contexte de la théorie des représentations des groupes finis de type de Lie, domaine dans lequel leur cohomologie joue un rôle essentiel. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons d'exploiter la littérature sur la cohomologie des variétés de Deligne-Lusztig afin d'en déduire les conséquences sur la cohomologie des espaces de Rapoport-Zink de type Coxeter. Nous appliquons cette stratégie aux cas des espaces de Rapoport-Zink PEL unitaires de signature (1,n-1) en une place ramifiée ou non. Fluctuation in cognitive engagement during listening and reading of erotica and horror stories
No full textInternational audienceThe present study examined whether emotional text content influences cognitive engagement and transportation during listening (Experiment 1) and reading (Experiment 2) of neutral, horror and erotic stories. In Experiment 1, fluctuation in arousal and cognitive engagement were measured by continuous arousal judgments and head movement recordings during story listening. Participants rated experienced transportation and emotional valence after each story. The results showed that emotional texts were more arousing and induced more transportation than neutral stories. There was less head motion overall and a steeper decrease in head motion across time for erotic than neutral or horror stories. In Experiment 2, participants’ head movements and reading times were recorded during reading, and participants rated experienced transportation, arousal, and valence after each text. The results showed that emotional texts were more arousing and induced higher transportation than neutral stories. There was less head motion during reading of erotic than neutral or horror texts. Horror texts were read slower and recalled better than neutral or erotic texts. The present results show that emotional text content impacts cognitive engagement during listening and reading of literary texts and demonstrates the importance of methodological triangulation when examining cognitive engagement
Search for direct production of winos and higgsinos in events with two same-charge leptons or three leptons in collision data at TeV with the ATLAS detector
No full textInternational audienceA search for supersymmetry targeting the direct production of winos and higgsinos is conducted in final states with either two leptons ( or ) with the same electric charge, or three leptons. The analysis uses 139 fb of collision data at TeV collected with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Simplified and complete models with and without -parity conservation are considered. In topologies with intermediate states including either or pairs, wino masses up to 525 GeV and 250 GeV are excluded, respectively, for a bino of vanishing mass. Higgsino masses smaller than 440 GeV are excluded in a natural -parity-violating model with bilinear terms. Upper limits on the production cross section of generic events beyond the Standard Model as low as 40 ab are obtained in signal regions optimised for these models and also for an -parity-violating scenario with baryon-number-violating higgsino decays into top quarks and jets. The analysis significantly improves sensitivity to supersymmetric models and other processes beyond the Standard Model that may contribute to the considered final states
The Impact of Incidental Emotions on Susceptibility to the Framing Effect: Failure to Detect a Moderating Effect of Happiness and Sadness
No full textInternational audienceWhen facing a choice between two equivalent options, decision has been shown to vary as a function of the formulation; this effect is named the framing effect, which has been linked to emotions. Using an emotional induction procedure, we explored whether induced happiness and sadness moderate framing susceptibility. Although sadness increased risky choices, neither sadness nor happiness significantly affected framing susceptibility. However, emotional arousal had an impact on the framing effect
