Implicit bias and perception of accent

    No full text
This study explores our underlying, unconscious attitudes towards foreign accents. Italian and Mandarin accents were compared in order to determine whether there is a common preference amongst Western Canadian participants. Implicit bias was measured using an Implicit Association Test, in which participants associated each accent with positive words as quickly as possible and reaction times were recorded. A survey was also taken to examine participants’ conscious attitudes towards the accents and compare them with their implicit biases. The survey results showed no preference for one accent or the other, with overall averages of 2.63 for Mandarin accents and 2.65 for Italian accents. The results of the IAT revealed that implicitly, Italian accents were preferred, having an average reaction time of 1528.68ms while Mandarin accents had an average reaction time of 1657.02ms. Implicitly, 16 participants preferred Italian accents, while only 4 participants preferred Mandarin accents. The results of this study suggest an underlying preference for Italian accents over Mandarin accents in Western Canadian society. Keywords: Implicit bias; sociophonetics; nonnative accents; Mandarin; Italia

A note on how weaving and knitting can enhance learning Salish reduplication patterns

    No full text
There is a dearth of research on how learners acquire reduplication patterns in the Indigenous languages of North America. Additionally, most approaches to teaching reduplication (a process in which meaning is expressed by copying part of the word) utilize abstract concepts from linguistics to explain how to derive a reduplicated word from a base word. This paper outlines some strategies for incorporating key concepts from weaving and knitting into developing pedagogical materials for learning Salish reduplication patterns. Keywords: Reduplication; pedagogy; Salis

A Gendered Approach to “Quality of Life” after Separation under the British Columbia Family Law Act Relocation Regime

    No full text
As established in existing literature, the separation of spouses has gendered consequences. Women are likely to suffer more severely, financially, from the dissolution of a relationship and are more likely to experience family violence. Mothers in heterosexual relationships are more likely to have care of children after separation than are fathers. In the face of those challenges, many guardians will apply to relocate for reasons that include seeking out emotional support from extended family and new partners, better financial opportunities, and housing affordability and availability. This article charts and analyzes British Columbia court decisions made under the Division 6 Relocation provisions of the Family Law Act. In Division 6, legislators have directed courts to consider the effects of a proposed relocation on a child’s quality of life and that of the guardian who proposed relocation. This article examines how courts have engaged with the many gendered aspects of quality of life following separation. It finds that courts’ recognition of family violence’s repercussions is uneven and recommends the explicit inclusion of family violence in the Division 6 quality of life provision. It identifies the following as areas for further judicial education: first, family violence and its connections to courts’ assessment of female applicants’ credibility and to barriers to accessing housing and, second, potential biases in assessments of new female versus new male partners of applicant parents in heterosexual relationships

Nourritures terrestres, nourritures célestes et rhétorique du sublime dans l\u27art de Bossuet panégyriste

In the Panegyrics of saint Gorgon, Bossuet uses the topics of eating and drinking, and changes its meaning under the paradigm of catholic dogma : it doesn\u27t help any more to express humiliation, but to express the greatness of christianism. This paradoxical construction of christian sublime forms the bedrock of an approach of language as eating and digesting : the topical construction raises the legendary aspect of the narrative of martyrdom - a border case of narrative fiction -, which is itself a component of the poetics of panegyric.

    No full text
In Isabelle de Charrière\u27s novels, there are repeated scenes of meals where the protagonists talk about eating. The novelist uses them to characterize her characters and to create situations, which allow her to illustrate her theses. The confrontation between the correspondence - currently being digitized - and the novels clearly shows this link between her democratic convictions (expressed in some of the letters) and their staging, aiming to reach a wider audience.
