The Restoration of Two Salmon Spawning Sites in Maple Creek, Port Coquitlam
Maple Creek flows through Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam in British Columbia. It is a salmon-bearing stream in an urbanized watershed. Maple Creek drains 128.2 hectares.This report focuses on gathering data through physical, chemical and biological testing and analyzing the results. Data was drawn from a census done on aquatic macro-invertebrates, fish trapping and water quality testing to support the installation of salmon spawning gravel at two sites. This project is part of a multi decade restoration program outlined in the Allen Thomson Report 1997 for Maple Creek and the volunteer stewards. The goals and objectives of the spawning gravel installation are to increase the quality and quantity of the gravel at the two sites where the returns have declined from historic norms.Active spawning gravel installation creates habitat immediately and this will assist in increasing salmon populations. The new spawning gravel will enhance biological function of the stream at these sites for salmon, invertebrates and other biological organisms.Data from the weekly samplings was compared to BC Water Quality guidelines for aquatic life parameters. Acceptable pH levels for salmon in freshwater streams is in the range from 7-9. Sustained levels below of 6 pH leads to mortality. The pH levels met the acceptable parameters with the exception of one reading which was extremely low at 5.4. As it was a manual reading and not a metered one it was considered by senior testers to be an anomaly. The downstream reading on that day also did not support the reading. Dissolved Oxygen results from weekly testing were within acceptable parameters given in the guidelines for aquatic health. Water temperature did not exceed the acceptable parameters. Turbidity levels were within acceptable parameter as the stream visibility was consistent with minute amounts of sediment.Aquatic macro invertebrate survey produced a variety of capture rates. The most pollution intolerant macro invertebrates are the Mayfly nymph Ephemeroptera, the Stonefly nymph Pleeoptera and the Caddisfly Trichoptera or (EPT)taxa which were not predominant taxon in any of the sites sampled. Restoring Aspen Parkland at Riverlot 56 in Central Alberta
The Aspen Parkland ecoregion occurs within Canada and the United States of America between boreal forest and prairie grasslands. Large scale clearing and cultivation of this region has left very little of it in a natural state. Riverlot 56 is a protected area that contains unaltered, natural aspen forest as well as some cleared areas that have been cultivated for hay. In 2014 the Riverlot 56 Natural Area Society, as designated stewards of the site, initiated a project with the aim of reforesting the cleared section in order to restore habitat and control the invasive plant species that had colonized the cleared area in the absence of native vegetation. Plantings of native trees and shrubs were conducted utilizing three methods; within fenced "exclosures" to prevent grazing, within "islands" of unmowed areas, and transplanted from the forest edge into a row. The intention was that these plantings would provide cover eventually outcompeting the invasivespecies onsite.By 2018, when this current project was initiated, there had been limited follow up and it was unknown whether the plantings had been successful. The goal of this project is to assess the three techniques that were utilized in order to answer the question, what is the most effective way to reforest a site within the Aspen Parkland while controlling invasive species? All of the plantings that were conducted in the study area were assessed for their rate of survival, both by species and propagation method. Within the three planting areas and the open field the amount of invasive plants per m 2 was assessed in order to understand the effectiveness of the plantings in controlling them.The intention of conducting this new project was to understand what had been effective in order to continue applying the principles of adaptive management. As there is limited information available on restoration projects within Aspen Parkland adaptive management offers the most effective way of managing the site while simultaneously gaining a greater understanding of the site. Over the long term reviewing what methods have been effective on site and adjusting management plans accordingly it will be possible to effectively and efficiently reforest Riverlot 56
“Of, Not For...”: The Evolving Recognition of Children’s Rights in a Community
This article describes the development of a charterof rights of children and youth in Hamilton,Ontario. The process involved gathering inputfrom over 1,500 children and youth in theform of spoken and written words, drawings,and other visual representations. A validationprocess resulted in over 900 more children beingdirectly engaged. The inclusion of participatoryresponsibilities for both children and adultsappears to have increased the level of acceptanceof the charter among adults. Awareness of thedocument was aided by its multiple formats ofpublication and by an exhibit that toured keylocations throughout the city, beginning at CityHall
Native versus invasive crab effluent effects on byssal thread production in the mussel, Mytilus trossulus (Gould, 1950)
Mussels have evolved many adaptations to protect themselves, including the production of byssal threads. These are strong, proteinaceous fibres that mussels secrete to adhere themselves to rocks, preventing detachment by waves and predators. These byssal threads may be strengthened if mussels can recognize potential threats, such as native crabs, as their populations have a long history of coevolution. Unfortunately, the introduction of invasive predators poses a challenge for prey, which may not be capable of recognizing them. In this study, byssal thread production in the Pacific blue mussel (Mytilus trossulus ) was observed when exposed to effluent from the native red rock crab (Cancer productus) or the invasive European Green crab (Carcinus maenas). M. trossulus were placed in closed systems with effluent from either C. productus , C. maenas or control (no predator), over a 24-hour time period. Final measurements of number, length and diameter of byssal threads were recorded. M. trossulus exposed to effluent from C. productus produced byssal threads at a statistically significantly faster rate than in the control group over the first 7.5 hours. M. trossulus exposed to effluent from C. maenas produced byssal threads at a statistically significantly faster rate than both the C. productus and control groups. However, after 24 hours, there was no statistically significant difference between the mean number of byssal threads for any treatment. Additionally, we found no statistically significant difference between the mean diameter of byssal threads produced or length of byssal threads produced for any treatment.
