Swimming and Diving in Grandpa\u27s River: A Promise of Help with Respect to Water on Halalt Territory
No full textDrawing on media reports, court proceedings, and ethnographic literature, this paper explores contentions between the Halalt First Nation and the Municipality of North Cowichan regarding rights and access to the Chemainus Aquifer. Using a well project proposed by the municipality as a focus, I describe colonial power dynamics and argue that a decolonizing shift is needed in law and society to reconcile Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of using and regulating resources on unceded Coast Salish territory.

Anxiety and Vulnerability: Women and Ritual Murder in Medieval Western Europe
No full text“Anxiety and Vulnerability” examines Christian ritual murder and host desecration accusations against Jews in medieval Europe. Analyzing several charges from diverse locations reveals trends in conceptualizations of women in religious discourse between the two groups. Previous studies of these accusations have acknowledged the presence and importance of female characters, but have not treated them as a subject of study in and of themselves. This paper moves female characters from the margins of ritual murder and host desecration charges to the forefront, arguing for the necessity of examining gender in understanding the rhetorical power of these influential narratives. Andino argues that Christians viewed women as the weak links in their struggle against Jews, reflecting anxiety over marginal women and their ability to fulfill their roles in Christian society. In Jewish accounts of these events, representations of women centered on their bodies as sites of Jewish debility and Christian aggression. Both Christians and Jews conceptualized the vulnerabilities of their communities in terms of female weakness. Through their shortcomings, women offered the religious Other a point of entry into the community, enabling and legitimizing the danger of the Other
CREATING FUTURES: RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES IN HUNGARY AND SWITZERLAND COLLABORATIVELY DEVELOP THEIR CAPACITY TO EMPOWER CHILDREN AND YOUTH TO ACTIVELY REALISE THEIR OWN FUTURES
No full textChild and youth homes in Hungary and Switzerland want to increase the chances that the approximately 1,000 children and youth in their care will transition well from residential care to other settings, will be fully included in society, and will live lives that they have reason to value. Key to this objective is the empowerment of the children and youth to take their development into their own hands, to develop ideas of a possible future, and to pursue these ideas actively and sustainably. In the project “Creating Futures”, these homes plan to collect knowledge from children, youth, staff, and managers, as well as from the literature; to develop a framework of analysis to identify current good practices, and potentials for further development; and to implement a concrete pilot project in each home. Evaluations of the learning and development process and dissemination of publications complete the project. Throughout, there will be a strong focus on the voice of children and youth. Collaborating as a community of practice and within the context of expert network FICE International, the homes will make use of their diversity for stimulating learning and development on the individual, professional, and organisational levels.
