The poetry of the Polish landed gentry drew on the ancient models of Horace and Virgil: on their images of the farmer-ploughman, the family, and the cyclical rhythms of nature. It also established an ethos of work, moderation, self-sufficiency, and freedom. In the 18th century, the perspective shifted: the home ceased to be a fixed living space, becoming more of a space of otium, a refuge from the court and the city while remaining a symbol of security and moral order. Individual images of gardens, seasons, and stages of human life began to appear in poetic works. After the partitions, the motif of farm work took on a patriotic dimension in which cultivating the land signified fidelity to tradition and freedom. The home of the landed gentry became etched in the Polish imagination as a space of harmony and enduring values, independent of time and history. The poetry of the Polish landed gentry drew on the ancient models of Horace and Virgil: on their images of the farmer-ploughman, the family, and the cyclical rhythms of nature. No further back than the late 19th century, equal access to education and science was a controversial issue, and to knowledge – even a taboo one. ‘A very difficult and delicate matter is treated with considerable skill, although many will think that it had better have been left alone’, read an 1896 review of Ellis Ethelmer’s “Baby Buds” from “The British Medical Journal”. This article focuses on different uses of natural science, especially botany, in children’s literature at the turn of the twentieth century in Great Britain and Poland, with the main case being a British botany primer for the youngest readers – actually a sex-education handbook, which triggered a serious and indeed heated debate among Polish literary critics, educators and parents, becoming an important element in the dispute over the shape of Polish education, girls’ education in particular. Edycja cyfrowa „Aratusa” i „Fenomenów” Jana Kochanowskiego – problematyka aparatu naukowego

In this text, the author uses the critical edition of Jan Kochanowski’s Aratus and Fenomena being prepared at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences to present the practical aspects of creating a functional back matter in relation to the first digital proof of such an edition. The rules for publishing Old Polish texts, which were created at the Institute in the late 1950s are confronted with the practice of classical philologists (in this case, Neo-Latinists) and with the contemporary digital toolset used for both textological research and publishing. It turns out that the adaptation of an analog edition to a digital one might cause a change in the concept of a given edition and that in such cases a significant role is played by the programmers working with the scientific editors and the editorial team.In this text, the author uses the critical edition of Jan Kochanowski’s Aratus and Fenomena being prepared at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences to present the practical aspects of creating a functional back matter in relation to the first digital proof of such an edition. „A co na owo zdanie, że kobieta niezamężna marnieje, to nigdy się nie zgodzę”, czyli rzecz o Krystynie Klementyny z Tańskich Hoffmanowej oraz o jej autorce (wybrane aspekty kulturowe)

This article brings to light the novel Krystyna (Lipsk, 1841), a work known to very few literary historians despite the fact that it was written by Klementyna née Tańska Hoffmanowa, one of the most famous and influential Polish novelists of the first half of the 19th century. In it, the author defended unmarried women and demonstrated that spinsterhood could be simultaneously socially beneficial and life-satisfying for the woman in question. In this respect, Krystyna, whose ideological message stands out among the novels of its time, constitutes a definitive voice in the debate surrounding spinsterhood in 19th-century Polish literature and as such may be regarded as a pioneering work in the defense of single women (including those who intentionally chose not to marry). This analysis also touches on important social issues of the first half of the 19th century. It draws attention to issues in women’s everyday life, their privacy (primarily those related to family and social relationships, and the choice of a husband), and the role of women as custodians of family and national traditions. Above all, however, it addresses matters related to the experiences of unmarried women. The model of a free woman proposed by Hoffmanowa in Krystyna reconciled old (pre-partition) tendencies deeply rooted in Polish tradition with modern (Enlightenment) influences, while also taking into account new demands that emerged during a period of political subjugation. This article brings to light the novel Krystyna (Lipsk, 1841), a work known to very few literary historians despite the fact that it was written by Klementyna née Tańska Hoffmanowa, one of the most famous and influential Polish novelists of the first half of the 19th century. The article discusses the teaching of creative writing at the university and within literary and cultural life, using as its case study the development at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań of the artistic-literary specialisation established in 2007 and the degree programme Creative Writing introduced in 2020. It draws attention to the still developing position of creative writing among the disciplines of the humanities, a position that calls for clearer definition, as well as to its place between academic education and the institutions and participants of literary and cultural life beyond the university – a relationship that deserves further support and development. An important element of artistic education is the combination of workshop-based classes with philological courses, in which the art of interpretation plays a central role. Interpretation is understood here as a practice that brings together skills of literary analysis and the practical craft of writing, supporting students in developing both interpretive competence and a growing awareness of literature as a cultural practice. The article discusses the teaching of creative writing at the university and within literary and cultural life, using as its case study the development at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań of the artistic-literary specialisation established in 2007 and the degree programme Creative Writing introduced in 2020. Napięcie kosztem pretekstu. O adaptacji filmowej „Przygody Stasia" Bolesława Prusa

Przygoda Stasia (Stas’ Adventure) – a short story by Boleslaw Prus (first printed in the magazine „Kłosy” in 1879) – became the subject of a film adaptation released in 1970 under the same title, directed by Andrzej Konic. This television movie deserves research attention for at least two reasons. Firstly, it is a work that, in the context of the history of Polish cinema, has been doomed to almost complete oblivion. It is worth asking about the reasons for this and attempting to reconstruct the historical and filmmaking circumstances of the film’s creation. Secondly, adaptation processes should be analyzed and interpreted (here: in relation primarily to the plot issues and the construction of the presented world).Przygoda Stasia (Stas’ Adventure) – a short story by Boleslaw Prus (first printed in the magazine „Kłosy” in 1879) – became the subject of a film adaptation released in 1970 under the same title, directed by Andrzej Konic. Z życia romantyka. Dwa nieznane listy Władysława Wężyka: do Lucjana Siemieńskiego i do Eleonory Karwickiej

The article includes the first edition of two letters written by Władysław Wężyk, a forgotten writer and activist from the 1840s. The first one, discovered in the Stefanyk National Science Library in Lviv, Ukraine, documents the young domestic writers’ interest in Towianism. In the second one, kept in the Jagiellonian Library, Wężyk expresses his intentions towards his future wife and considers his life plans, which include his participation in the awaited uprising. The newly-discovered letters document both the initial enthusiasm in the country towards Towiański’s doctrine and the author’s involvement in the conspiracy network in the 1840s.The article includes the first edition of two letters written by Władysław Wężyk, a forgotten writer and activist from the 1840s.
