Narratives of Encounter: H. G. Wells's The Time Machine and the Literature of Imperialism
Excerpts from Einar Schleef’s "Droge Faust Parsifal" (Drugs Faust Parsifal)
Arguably the most important books by Einar Schleef (1944-2001) are his novel Gertrud, a monologue narrated by his fictionalized mother, his diaries, and the work excerpted here, Droge Faust Parsifal (Drugs Faust Parsifal, 1997). Schleef also wrote plays and short stories, and was a theater director, set and costume designer, actor, illustrator, painter, and photographer. His work deserves a wide readership, yet only a story and a play have been translated into English (Buchner 1982, 130-138; Vivis 1987). Drugs Faust Parsifal’s 500 pages are autobiography, theater history, dramaturgy and cultural essay in one. It won the City of Bremen Literature Prize in 1998 and was adapted for the stage in 2011 by Armin Petras. The selected passages from Drugs, which are somewhat anomalous in a book mainly about dramaturgy, concern Schleef’s personal struggles; they have historical relevance and show his linguistic dexterity, articulated in his “suffering language, a language for suffering” (Windrich 2009, 481). Residual Urbanization and the Social Relations of Collective Struggle in an Amazonian Kichwa Commune from Ecuador
In this article, we combine anthropological theory with an urban studies framework to analyze and understand the processes by which cities expand into rural areas and transform landscapes, ways of life, and social practices in uneven and complex ways. Looking at the Kichwa commune of Mulchi Yaku as a case study, we argue that local cultural practices not only make urbanization partial or even subordinate but also reproduce the social relations of struggle through political and social actions of defending territory, ecology, and rights to collective organization. While capitalistic urban processes penetrate indigenous territories, urbanization is transformed by the political control that people have within their territory to define indigenous life through local values and unique cultural modes of social reproduction. As such, urbanization becomes incomplete or “residual,” and communal forms of social reproduction predominate. Our analysis employs a variety of methods that include survey data, geographical information systems, satellite image data, and fine-grained ethnographic research to understand how local people adapt and transform the processes of urban expansion within their territories

Roadmap to the Future: Calipers to Digitizing to Virtual Osteology
Steve Ousley was our friend, colleague, and collaborator. This article reflects on the impact of his work in modernizing three-dimensional cranial data collection. By building the 3Skull software program, something he is less well known for than FORDISC, he allowed generations of researchers to collect cranial and other skeletal coordinate data in a meticulous yet efficient manner. This contribution not only allowed for the creation of new knowledge, but it also served to facilitate repatriation at the Smithsonian. At the time of his death, Steve was working on the next great leap in skeletal data collection, virtual osteology. We discuss this growing component of our field, including how it is grounded in Steve’s prior work, ethical concerns, and promise for the future
Using Stable Nitrogen Isotope Ratios from Human Skeletal Muscle Tissue for Postmortem Interval (PMI) Estimation (Part 2)
Fly larvae were analyzed for stable nitrogen isotope analysis (δ15N) to test if values can be used to predict season of death/decomposition as a first step in developing a robust quantitative method for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. This is the first study to analyze δ15N values from blow flies (BF) (Ditera, Calliphoridae: Lucilia coeruleiviridis, Calliphora vicina, Calliphora vomitoria, Chrysoma rufifaces) and black soldier flies (BSF) (Diptera, Stratiomyidae: Hermetia illucens) to estimate seasonal PMI in eastern Tennessee. This study is part of a larger project seeking to expand stable isotope methods utilized in forensic anthropology to move beyond questions of geolocation and diet. When BF and BSF δ15N values are used to predict season of placement at the University of Tennessee Anthropology Research Facility, the BF δ15N values only have an overall accuracy rate of 38.4%, while the BSF δ15N values perform better with an overall accuracy rate of 72.6%. Based on the seasonal distribution of BSF δ15N values, it is our recommendation that only δ15N values from BSF be used as a general indicator of winter versus summer placement when values are above 30‰ versus below 18‰, respectively. Analysis of δ15N values in fly larvae is promising as a quantitative PMI estimation method, but further research is needed.
