    Get PDF
Blended learning has been adopted in many universities worldwide since it combines the advantages of both online learning and face to face instruction. In this paper, the researcher reports on the quantitative segment of a mixed-methods case study that was conducted in a public university in Malaysia with the aim of investigating the ESL instructors’ reflections on the implementation of blended learning in their English language classrooms. More specifically, the researcher was interested in identifying the factors that enhance the implementation of blended learning and the challenges that seem to hinder an effective blended learning environment.   The quantitative data of the study were collected by a survey questionnaire, which was distributed to at least 30 English language instructors. Nineteen instructors responded to the questionnaire, and the data were analyzed by descriptive statistics via the statistical package for social science (SPSS). Findings show that while experience with technology and positive attitudes towards technology were identified as main factors enhancing the implementation of blended learning; workload and technological infrastructure were found to be the major challenges. The study signifies the need to address technology and workload related issues in order to effectively implement blended learning to promote ELT at tertiary level. &nbsp

College Students' Experience in Online Asynchronous Peer Feedback in Writing

    Get PDF
Writing is heavy, tedious, and difficult for college students. Likewise, writing instruction is equally arduous for teachers. The implementation of online and remote classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic becomes an opportunity for students to develop writing through their peers’ feedback. This study analyzes the college students’ experience and evaluation in online asynchronous peer feedback in writing. One hundred college students in free sections from a private university responded to an adopted, modified, and validated survey questionnaire and focus group discussions to evaluate and validate their experience in online asynchronous peer feedback in writing. The survey results underwent statistical analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 20, to determine the weighted mean scores. Thus, the results revealed that the college students have a strong positive experience in online asynchronous peer-feedback in writing with the course facilitator of English language-based subjects. Though online asynchronous peer feedback in writing is an established learning approach, it is not yet maximized in all or most classes of college students. Nevertheless, the study concludes that the positive assumptions, experimentations, and explorations done in online peer feedback in writing remain valuable for college students, especially in their asynchronous writing development

Re-contextualisation and the Transformation of Meanings: A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Islamic State Pedagogical Discourse in Iraq

    Get PDF
This article is an attempt to investigate the recontextualisation and transformation process involved in the pedagogic discourse of Islamic State classroom textbooks during its takeover of some parts of Iraq. The article uses an eclectic analytical framework comprising Bernstein's pedagogical model of recontextualization, Linell's levels of recontextualization, Fairclough's concept of genre mixing, Wodak's discourse-historical approach (DHA), and Barthes' model of visual semiotics. These mixed approaches are applied to the analysis of a variety of visual images of Islamic State published textbooks and classroom pedagogic visual aids downloaded from different websites. It is found that the meaning of the pedagogic discourse is transformed via interdiscursive recontextualisation processed in two reversal directions: a militarization of pedagogic discourse and a pedagogization of decapitation practice. Recontextualisation is exceptionally significant with regard to Islamic State jihadist pedagogic discourse that is reframed historically and ideologically to suit an extreme sense of religious intolerance which Islamic State prioritizes as a foundation of regaining and refreshing their lost Islamic caliphate

Despite the fact that English songs with written lyrics are already familiar in Malaysia, however only a few that recognizes the potential use of the material in teaching vocabulary especially among Malaysian English teachers. The researcher finds it necessary to understand the perception towards the idea of using English songs with written lyrics in teaching vocabulary especially in Malaysian context. This quantitative research aims to identify the MSU TESL practicum students’ perception towards the idea of using English songs with written lyrics in teaching vocabulary and to find out if there is any difference according to gender and program (DTESL/BTESL) in the practicum students’ perception. A total of 164 TESL practicum students are used as the sample in this research where an online questionnaire is distributed to collect data. The results reveal that the practicum students exhibit a positive perception towards the idea of using English songs with written lyrics in teaching vocabulary. No significant difference in perception is found regardless the gender and programs. The findings are hopefully to give significant to the English teachers and the English Language Teaching curriculum developer. Further recommendation is given for a better understanding of the perception

The study elucidates the merits and demerits or strengths and weaknesses in using the instructional resources among Social Studies teachers. In the Basic Education Unit of the Department of Education, this study would give them feedback on how and what interventions would be the best to employ and reinforce to overcome their weaknesses. This study used the descriptive method of research to determine the strengths and weaknesses of teachers in teaching Araling Panlipunan ( Social Studies). The study focused mainly on the strengths and weaknesses of teachers in teaching Araling Panlipunan( Social Studies)  in terms of teaching content, motivating the students, presenting the lesson, assessing student performance, and attainment of lesson objectives. Data were gathered from the Grade IV teachers who handled Araling Panlipunan ( Social Studies) subject during the study and their respective pupils in San Pablo, Isabela.  The performance of the Grade IV pupils was determined in terms of their final grades in Araling Panlipunan ( Social Studies) during the School year 2017-2018 and through their percentage score in a forty-item achievement test. With these strategies, the teacher frees the students to learn using their critical thinking abilities so that they will be able to discuss crucial issues and challenges that confront them in everyday life

The present research paper examines how Moroccan political public authorities’ communication strategies influence Moroccan male and female publics’ feedback, and the perception of government’s crisis response strategies in light of a new atmosphere, a new condition at the pandemic time of the coronavirus Covid-19. The  data is collected  from 132 Moroccan internet users via online survey. It was conducted between May and June, 2020, after the declaration of the state of emergency, the present study gathered concrete information and viewpoints regarding Moroccan male and female internet users’ feedback about political leaders’ communication strategies, trust in different sources and media channels, and perception of the Moroccan political leaders’ crisis communication management.  The findings of the study have revealed that younger male and female publics, who got news from social media, had negative views of authority messages, and expressed more negative opinions of the government’s crisis response and communication strategies as weeks went by. Therefore, trust in public authorities’ decreased as the crisis evolves. Other age group, 60 years or older of the respondents get information about the crisis from institutional political sources and mainstream news media, which have been more aligned with authorities’ information at the start of the health crisis. In addition, women have used multiple media platforms, but they have less direct access to information than do men. While some  progress has been made in  women’s political use of information and news consumption during the outbreak on social media,  on  the  overall,  the  participation  of  women  in both feedback and news consumption is still very limited in Morocco

The study shows the effect of risk management in IT businesses is utilized in the Scru

Bernstein polynomial induced two step hybrid numerical scheme for solution of second order initial value problems

    Get PDF
This paper presents a two-step hybrid numerical scheme with one off-grid point for the numerical solution of general second-order initial value problems without reducing to two systems of the first order. The scheme is developed using the collocation and interpolation technique invoked on Bernstein polynomial. The proposed scheme is consistent, zero stable, and is of order four(44). The developed scheme can estimate the approximate solutions at both steps and off-step points simultaneously using variable step size. Numerical results obtained in this paper show the efficiency of the proposed scheme over some existing methods of the same and higher orders
