The effect of closeness on Japanese L2 English learners’ use of emoji
This study investigates the use of emoji by Japanese learners of English in discussion forums. Specifically, the discussion forums refer to online conversations on the LINE smartphone application. The investigations answer the research question: “What is the effect of closeness on learners’ rate of emoji use in online discussion?”. The aims of the study are pursued by gauging learners’ perceived closeness with each other via a questionnaire with five levels of closeness from one to five; the rating of one is the closest and the rating of five is the most distant. Following this, five weeks of online discussions from the LINE discussion forums are investigated, analyzing a total of 123 messages, which contain a total of 10,081 words and 578 emoji. The participants are 25 second-year students who are enrolled at a middle-ranking Japanese university. They are from two classes, consisting of 21 females and four males in total. The investigations find a higher rate of emoji being employed in relationships identified as more distant. The study concludes that L2 English learners may also employ more emoji in distant relationships, where interactants may be attempting to reduce the social distance between each other

Evaluating the pertinence of foreign languages (German, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Italian) in Cameroon’s education curriculum: needs for reform of the curriculum and language in education policy
The ongoing debate regarding the decolonisation of Africa should focus primarily on the domain of education, as ideologies about languages are reflected, implemented and reproduced in the language in education policy (LIEP) of a country. Most African countries have inherited the Western monolingual LIEPs and have given prevalence to ex-colonial languages as official languages of education, media, and administration. Some countries, like Cameroon (host to more than 270 African languages), have gone beyond preferring French and English as a medium of instruction, adding more foreign languages (German, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, and Arabic) in secondary schools and universities, to the detriment of national languages. Most studies on language policy address the issue of language as a medium of instruction and neglect to critically evaluate the pertinence and relevance of the generalised teaching/learning of foreign languages in schools and universities in Cameroon. This study looks at the connection between teaching foreign languages and Cameroonians' transnational aspirations. The data were collected from discussions on two Facebook threads about the topic, discussions with lecturers of foreign languages at university, and a meta-synthesis analysis of existing statistics about international migration for educational purposes. The findings reveal that inbound international migration flux is associated with language but is not the most crucial factor. As a result, the study suggests either suppressing the generalised teaching of foreign languages in the francophone subsystem of education and setting up a public-private partnership or at least suppressing the Spanish and Italian languages whose knowledge has not provided any direct benefit for the majority of the learner. The cost of running those languages is not equivalent to the return
The Limits of Teaching Literary Discourse: A Stylistic Approach
Some scholars take it for granted that literature and linguistics are detached areas of education. Stylistics, however, as the study will show, is the field where literary criticism and linguistics could overlap and thus contribute to ameliorating the strategies of teaching literature. There are two streams of literary criticism: the textual approaches, such as Formalism and New Criticism, which highlight close reading of the given text. On the other hand, there are contextual disciplines, for instance, Marxist Criticism and Feminist Criticism, which draw on socio-political and ideological movements. Consequently, teachers vary in the way they interpret and instruct their students. Stylistics, nonetheless, is a field where different approaches could converge. It is not only a theory describing how one could read and understand a literary discourse but also a pedagogical method that could help students appreciate literature and encourage them to be involved in the interpretation procedure. The study will illustrate these points through the discussion of “foregrounding”—a stylistic device—in Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem: “Pied Beauty”. Yet, however efficient in stylistics a teacher could be, he/she should respect certain limits
Are Women a Soft Target for Cyber Crime in India
A growing global issue that might have significant social and economic repercussions is cyber violence against women. This is due to the growing popularity of social media, the spread of information via mobile devices, and the growth of the internet. Any form of sexual or gender-based violence against women that takes place through ICTs like the Internet, mobile devices, and video games is referred to as cyber violence. These technologies are ideal for using as weapons against women for a variety of reasons these include cyber stalking, sexual abuse (including sending sexually explicit or pornographic emails to the victim), cyber extortion, cyber bullying, cybersex trafficking, and phishing. Even if there are more crimes against women overall, a woman can find that experiencing a cybercrime is the most upsetting thing that has ever happened to her. More so in India, where women are devalued and cybercrimes aren't even given significant legal consideration. India's legal system's current rules and practises are shown to have gaps in Cyber Crimes against Women, as well as what can be done to keep individuals secure online. In this essay, I'd want to discuss the various cybercrimes that can affect women and how they can harm them. I also briefly discuss new laws that are being introduced in this field, such as the Criminal Amendment Bill, as well as the many statutes that protect women in these circumstances, such as the Information Technology Act of 2000. (2013). to reach a conclusion, I consider a number of well-known cybercrime cases. Additionally, we need to consider a couple of answers for the rising frequency of cyber crimes against ladies in India. At the end, we talk about the choices accessible to casualties of cyber crime and the changes that should be made to the overall set of laws to battle the rising tide of cyber crimes
Thermo-diffusion effect on magnetohydrodynamics flow of fractional Casson fluid with heat generation and first order chemical reaction over a vertical plate
Analytical solution of thermo diffusion effect on magnetohydrodynamics flow of fractionalized Cassonfluid over a vertical plate immersed in a porous media is obtained. Moreover, in the model of the problem, additional effects, like a chemical reaction, heat source/sink, and thermal radiation are also considered. The model is solved by three approaches, namely, Atangana-Baleanu, Caputo-Fabrizio, and Caputo fractionalderivative of non-integer order γ. The governing dimensionless equations for temperatures, concentrations, and velocities are solved using Laplace transform method and compared graphically. The effects of different parameters like fractional parameter γ, Thermo diffusion Sr, and magnetic parameter M are discussedthrough numerous graphs. Furthermore, comparisons among ordinary and fractionalized velocity fields arealso drawn. It is found that the velocity obtained with Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivative is less than thatobtained by Caputo, Caputo-Fabrizio, or ordinary derivatives
Endemic Equilibrium and Forward Bifurcation in the Mathematical Model for Using Wolbachia to Control Spread of Zika Virus Disease
This paper focuses on the use of wolbachia to control the spread of zika virus disease. Zika virus disease is an arboviral disease that spreads through bites of female mosquitoes in the aedes family especially, aedes aegypti. Experimental studies have indicated that wolbachia could be used to prevent the spread of zika virus disease by infecting aedes aegypti with wolbachia in a laboratory and releasing them in the wild to mate with the wild aedes aegypti.
A system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is used to model the use of wolbachia to stop the spread of zika virus disease in the human and mosquito populations. as well as the population of wolbachia-infected aedes aegypti used as control. It is shown through bifurcation analysis that the model exhibits forward bifurcation, which confirms that a unique endemic equilibrium exists in the model when the control reproduction number, \mathcal{R}_c>1. The existence of forward bifurcation in the model means that \mathcal{R}_c<1 is enough to guarantee eradication of zika virus disease using wolbachia as a biocontrol. Hence, the spread of zika virus disease can be controlled irrespective of the initial sizes of infected human and mosquito population
Numerical solution of systems of fractional order integro-differential equations with a Tau method based on monic Laguerre polynomials
In this paper, numerical technique based on monic Laguerre polynomials is proposed to obtain approximate solutions of initial value problems for systems of fractional order integro-differential equations (FIDEs). Operational fractional integral matrix is constructed. This operational matrix is applied together with the monic Laguerre Tau method to solve systems of FIDEs. This systems of FIDEs will be transformed into a system of algebraic equations which can be solved easily. Numerical results and comparisons with other methods are also presented to show the efficiency and applicability of the proposed method
Language learning strategy preferences and levels of willingness to communicate by Iranian EFL learners
The present study aims at investigating the relationship between Iranian EFL learners’ levels of willingness to communicate (WTC) and their preferences of language learning strategies. To achieve this goal, a quantitative study was carried out with 46 Iranian EFL learners majoring in English translation. The participants’WTC levels were determined through willingness to communicate (WTC) questionnaire developed by McCroskey and Richmond (2013). Oxford’s (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learners (SILL) was also used as another instrument to investigate the participants’ preferences of language learning strategy use.The participants were moderate strategy users. Metacognitive and cognitive strategieswere found to be used strongly by the participants of the study. It was also found that the participants were moderate regarding their willingness to communicate. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found to exist between the two variables of the study. The findings of this study have implications for teachers, students, material developers as well as course designers
