Get PDFAlthough mining is at present a signifi cant source of foreign currency fl ows to Peru, it went through times of crisis when metal quotations dropped. Many international mining majors weathered the crises with the fi nancial backing of their parent companies or fi nancial multilaterals, and their operative economies of scale. In the wake of the crisis, some small and intermediate mining companies closed their operations, leaving behind a negative impact of their communities and a degraded environment. Yet, other companies, thanks to the commitment of their shareholders, workers and local banks, introduced a number of initiatives to negotiate the crisis. The story of Gold Land Mining illustrates the case of those companies that managed to survive during very dire times

The first section discusses the relevance of adopting a strategy based on economic corridors as an efficient alternative to combine scale of production and efficient logistics costs, in particular for the Sullana-Tambogrande-San Lorenzo-Ayabaca and ChulucanasMorropon-Huancabamba corridors. The second section adopts a systemic view of agro-industrial competitiveness to identify the barriers to and ex ante conditions that have a positive impact on lime production, namely adoption of technologies, growers’ associations, access to financing, adoption of mechanized planting and harvesting techniques, and others

The gap between the interests of both actors (the company vs. the people), deepened by personal feelings, created an attitude of rejection towards Chochomin mining company (Chinese capitals) and its staff. Julio Concha, the company’s new head of community relations, has to face this hard situation and restart activities that were paralyzed by the population. This case is based on real facts and shows that personal attitudes and approach can often be keys to open or chains to close the doors of social consensus activities

In the first section, statistics show Peru is basically a unipolar travel destination. The second section presents the complex problems identified at the Sanctuary. To conclude, the study presents a proposed solution, including setting up a structure to manage the Sanctuary’s strategic planning while abiding by the key principles of sustainable development

Get PDFMoney laundry is the process that hides the origin of resources obtained through illegal activities like drug traffi cking, smuggling, corruption, tax fraud, white-collar crimes, public misappropriation, extortion, illegal work, and, lately, terrorism. The resources are presented as coming from legal activities, and are freely traded in the fi nancial system. However, thanks to the ongoing efforts of international organisms, the countries have established regulations, institutions and organisms to fi ght this crime. In Peru, the entity created for this purpose is the Financial Intelligence Unit, and several legal provisions have been set forth in this regard. This document presents a methodology aimed at generating analysis instruments, indicators and procedures to allow fi nancial institutions to detect money laundry operations. The information used to generate said indicators is provided by INEI’s annual economic survey database, and the information to generate the analysis instrument comes from satellite account
An empirical study of the relationships betwen corruption, capital leakages and country risk: part I
Get PDFThis paper investigates the relationship between corruption and capital flight in developing countries. Part I tackles the challenge of defining and measuring capital flight, as well as the various root causes of expatriated savings. Our research contributes to the corruption and capital market literature in several ways. First, the issue of capital flight has attracted less attention than that of external capital inflows in emerging market countries. In particular, capital flight has kept a low profile in academic circles until the late 1990s. In addition, research often looks at capital flight as a portfolio issue, and very few studies consider corruption as a «push factor». Second, our paper looks at why capital flight deserves renewed interest, as the globalization of financial markets broadens investment diversification opportunities for domestic residents. Increasingly, official agencies express concern regarding the recycling of generous development aid flows and heavy borrowing in the international capital markets outside the developing countries’ economies. In the aftermath of the G-7 1996 Cologne meeting, larger and broader debt relief, coupled with a strong emphasis on sustainable development policies, focuses on the urgency of capital flight repatriation. Third, we assume that corruption combines two kinds of centrifugal forces for capital leakages: corruption-driven money leaves a country because of fear of being caught by the tax and judiciary authorities; in addition, money leaves a country because of fear that a corrupt government will not provide a stable and conducive environment for safe savings and profitable investment. In Part II of our research, we test the assumption that the higher the level of corruption, the less conducive the national environment for private investment, and the greater the capital leakages

In this effort, it addresses the main theoretical foundations of ICTs and highlights the leading role placed by the Chilean government in e-trade by creating an on-line government procurement system (ChileCompra). Additionally, it presents the results of a survey to suppliers in the Los Lagos region on their perception of this new system, in operation since 2003. Get PDFThe authors evaluate the best alternatives to offer eggfruit in foreign markets, by stressing the fruit’s advantages and looking for an appropriate by-product attractive for exportation. Their evaluation is based on a research on eggfruit, its types, characteristics, uses, growing in Peru and industrialization methods, and also on statistical data collection, and production and exports projections. Italy was found to be the most appropriate destination, because of its traditional ice cream market, where freeze-dried eggfruit powder can be used as main fl avoring input. Taking these fi ndings into account, the authors propose a 10-year business plan which includes a strategic proposal for installation and business growth, both at the production integration level and the product development level.
