Get PDF-This article discuses the results of a questionnaire on English-German false-friend pairs, carried out among four groups of respondents. The first three groups included Polish students of German and English Studies at the University of Rzeszow, while the last one consisted of native speakers of German. The respondents stated that their knowledge of false friends in both languages was good or even profound, however, the results obtained in the practical part of the questionnaire seemed to diverge from their declared knowledge. This suggests the need to pay greater attention to the phenomenon of false friends in foreign language teaching

Apart from that, typical languageareas take part in different non-language cognitive processes. Hence the linguistic ability should not be understood as a single and separate cognitive skill which can be attributed to some particular language organ, whose function consists only in producing and analyzing linguistic signals.Language should rather be perceived as a complex phenomenon and language processing as the one consisting of many subprocesses which is indicated by neuro-cognitive models

Nevertheless, learning German is a changing reality, its main fluctuations depending mostly on geographical and institutional factors at the educational level. In order to keep German attractive in our multilingual society, new teaching and learning concepts must be profiled, which can make foreign language acquisition suitable to a context of modern language polyphony. In any case, to learn German pays more today than ever before
