    Da or weil, daher or deswegen? / Because it is not adequate for the target language...? That’s why! Target language adequacy of causal adverbs in L1- and L2-Texts in German

    Grammar books for L2-learners mostly follow grammatical themes, e.g. sentence – verb – conjunctions. However, when a L2-learner composes a text, he will probably focus more on the function he wants to express than the form he wants to use. In this article, functionality versus grammatical categories will be discussed in order to answer the question, whether and – if so – how German and Dutch students differ in their way of expressing causality in academic writing. An analysis of German Bachelor’s and Master’s theses written by German and Dutch students showed differences between these groups in their use of subcategories (word classes) and specific words for expressing causality. The absence of a functional structure and specific information about the use of causal connectives in grammar books can therefore be regarded as an important cause for these findings. Especially for advanced L2-learners of German it seems recommendable to organize grammar books to put a greater focus on function (rather than form).Grammar books for L2-learners mostly follow grammatical themes, e.g. sentence – verb – conjunctions.     This article presents the findings of selected empirical research on language anxiety, conducted in various countries and among age groups at diverse proficiency levels, applying different research designs and anxiety measurement instruments. First of all, the role of some language skills in anxiety production is presented. The studies summarized below focus on listening, reading and writing in order to more specifically classify the causes of language anxiety. Then, a discussion of the relationship between anxiety during the three stages of language processing (i.e. input, processing, output) and its relationship to learning deficits is presented

    In this paper, a new generic development in the medical case report will be presented as a potential tool in a variety of medical contexts. A case report describes new diseases or their novel aspects, and its new interactive type additionally allows readers to comment on published cases and features patients’ first person narratives. This development may be a useful tool in medical English language courses, in medical training as well as in professional development.     Storytelling in literary and language teachingof German

    The article starts with a discussion of the essential theories of storytelling, reading and writing, and focuses on the concept of reading-to-write. It discusses the use and the abuse of classical schema of storytelling – “the mouse”. In the last step, using fragments of different children’s books, the article develops an integrative literary and language teaching model for school lessons of German in a way which stimulates a highly functional receptive and productive handling of language semantics and performance

    Translating foreignness. Experience from a translation project carried out by a students’ project group

    The article partially sums up the results of a translating project realized by a students’ science club. The aim of the project was to translate into German an interview with the caretaker of the synagogue in Łańcut. The interview deals with the history of the building and the history of the former Jewish community in Łańcut. Particularly problematic in the translation process were terms originating from Yiddish or Hebrew: realia, cultural artefacts, religious terms and some other exoticisms. Another barrier was connected with the ability to approach the text from the receiver’s perspective. The article discusses those and other difficulties involved in the process of translation and some possible ways of solving them.The article partially sums up the results of a translating project realized by a students’ science club.     Ethnophaulismen in translatorischer Perspektive

    The subject of this paper is the translational challenge which is translating linguistic representations of national stereotypes, depicted on the examples of ethnonyms of a pejorative overtone, used by representatives of one nation towards another, such as: szwab in Polish and Piefke, Tschusch and Katzelmacher in German.     The cognitive function of specialized languages: educational implications

    The current article explores the problem of conceptualizing specialized languages in the general body of language, and, as such, will refer extensively to the concepts described by S. Grucza (2013) based on the anthropocentric theory of language per se. By focusing on the cognitive function of specialized languages and evoking the principles of ecological linguistics, the necessity of integrating specialized knowledge with specialized language will be highlighted. Consequently, pedagogical implications for ESP syllabi and teacher education will be drawn
