A linguistic approach to the theme of language decadence. In consideration of whether language change should be a topic of interest for German as a foreign language

    Get PDF
The concept of language decadence can be interpreted in different ways: as mixing of languages, language deterioration, or language loss. As linguists are aware, all these manifestations commonly attributed to so-called language decadence are actually phenomena of language change. The debate on language decadence, while fascinating to public opinion, is based upon an abstract inconsistent view of language as a perfect, immutable instrument, to be used according to precise rules. Nevertheless, it is unavoidable in foreign language instruction to refer to rules and to a manageable model of standard language. The transmission of awareness about language change can avoid the creation of myths about language decadenceThe concept of language decadence can be interpreted in different ways: as mixing of languages, language deterioration, or language loss. Enhancing the role of pragmatics in primary English teacher training

    Get PDF
Teaching EFL in primary school is no longer a novelty but firmly established in the education landscape throughout Europe and many countries worldwide. Primary English language teaching (PELT) is a unique branch of ELT insofar as it entails both the teaching of children and beginners. While PELT teachers and PELT teacher educators largely agree that this concurrence of ‘young plus beginning’ requires a focus on vocabulary, speaking and listening, introduced and practiced through songs, games, stories, roleplaying and embodiment techniques such as Total Physical Response, pragmatic aspects often take a backseat in PELT teacher training and by extension in the PELT classroom, even though it has been established that pragmatics instruction is necessary and feasible on all proficiency levels, right from the beginning. This article discusses possible reasons for this omission and illustrates with authentic examples why pragmatics should play a bigger role in the training of primary English teachers.Teaching EFL in primary school is no longer a novelty but firmly established in the education landscape throughout Europe and many countries worldwide. Teaching materials for neighbouring language teaching at school. A German-Dutch comparison

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the differences between teaching Dutch in Germany and German in the Netherlands, while considering the challenges teachers are confronted with, e.g. the lack of appropriate textbooks. In particular, the composition and method of some textbooks for Dutch and German are presented and evaluated with regard to their practicality in the classroom. It is striking that textbooks for German are written in Dutch, and that pupils even have to work out tasks in Dutch and not in the target language, while there is merely one textbook in Germany for school-based teaching, lacking a consideration of school types, age groups, and prior knowledge. Even though the conditions of neighbouring language teaching are particularly diverse, teachers on both sides are in urgent need of more innovative and improved teaching material which ensures that pupils are able to develop and improve their language skills, as well as their intercultural competences. This paper discusses the differences between teaching Dutch in Germany and German in the Netherlands, while considering the challenges teachers are confronted with, e.g. the lack of appropriate textbooks. Writing fairy tales and learning professional language: on creative writing in professional language classes

    Get PDF
The paper discusses the question of creative writing in business language teaching, using the example of writing fairy tales about taxes. For learners who do not have previous knowledge of the subject and need to acquire a similar level of expertise and vocabulary simultaneously, creative writing in language classes can increase learning efficiency and motivation, facilitate the cognitive processing of complex, complicated content, and integrate newly acquired (language) skills and expertise into the individual’s thinking processes. The paper discusses the question of creative writing in business language teaching, using the example of writing fairy tales about taxes. Evaluation of liaison interpreting in university education: Game of Thrones – How professionally does Missandei act?

    Get PDF
This article aims to present a didactic teaching proposal, which broaches the issue of evaluation of liaison interpreting. An interpreting scene in the popular series Game of Thrones, in whose third season the slave Missandei serves as a negotiating interpreter, will serve as a live demonstration. On the basis of the evaluation criteria elaborated by Kautz (2002), this scene will be examined and analysed in a plenary session, to enable students to form a clear idea about how negotiation interpreting can look in practice, what difficulties can arise, what solutions can be found and what strategies can be adopted. The subsequent discussion serves as a starting point for further reflections about professional ethics, codes of ethics, the neutrality of the interpreter, etc. This teaching proposal has attracted wide interest and its didactic could all be more than achieved. This article aims to present a didactic teaching proposal, which broaches the issue of evaluation of liaison interpreting. Methodological problems of using questions in foreign language teaching

    Get PDF
The author discusses the status and role of questions in foreign language teaching. Although they are essential tools of managing the learning process, the topic does not enjoy much interest in the methodological literature. Therefore it seems advisable to discuss the methodological problems of foreign language teaching in a broader context including both the activation of learners and teachers with questions and application of questions while working with a foreign language textThe author discusses the status and role of questions in foreign language teaching. Get PDF
The present paper discusses the importance of needs analysis in ESP.
