Polish Nonword Span (PNWSPAN): A new tool for measuring phonological loop capacity
The phonological loop, which is a component of working memory, is considered to be one of the most significant factors affecting L1 and L2 learning. In order to measure this construct properly, a reliable instrument in the native language of the participants is needed. The purpose of this paper is to present the Polish Nonword Span PNWSPAN, which is a tool constructed to measure verbal working memory, in particular the phonological loop, in the case of adults. The article presents the theoretical framework of the study and the process of construction of the test, namely its structure, scoring and validation procedure. The phonological loop, which is a component of working memory, is considered to be one of the most significant factors affecting L1 and L2 learning. On the evolution of Polish syllabi and core curricula in foreign language teaching
The first part of the article is devoted to the terminology connected with the notions of core curriculum and syllabi. With reference to the subject, a five-level model of working on documents is presented. After, there follows a historical outline on the evolution of documents, from the national school curriculum to the first core curricula of general education, with reference to foreign language teaching at various stages of education, which was prepared based of the analysis of legal documents. The next chapter shows a syllabus from the present-day perspective of education law, and presents its functions. It describes the results of pilot questionnaires on the functions and role of German teaching syllabi in the Polish educational system in the context of previous theoretical considerations. The article concludes with ideas on leading and optimizing the role of contemporary curricula documentsThe first part of the article is devoted to the terminology connected with the notions of core curriculum and syllabi. Intersemiotic translation: Comments on audio description from a Translation Studies perspective
There is no doubt that Translation Studies have firmly established themselves as an independent scientific field. However, there are thematic overlaps in some areas concerning other disciplines. This work investigates the relations between interlinguistic translation and intersemiotic translation from the point of view of translation studies. First of all, a set of criteria for the identification of proper translation is offered and, in a second step, we examine how theoretical elements like communicative equivalence and communicative value can be transferred to a linguistic discourse by means of the intersemiotic translation modality known as audio description (AD).There is no doubt that Translation Studies have firmly established themselves as an independent scientific field. Communicative effort. Toward a true to everyday life intercultural (foreign language) teacher training
Intercultural (foreign language) teacher training tends to concentrate on selective case studies developed to show communicative problems, caused by their very special intercultural and multilingual characteristics. It also tends to make a big promise of a rapid improvement in intercultural communication in a multicultural and multilingual society by transferring the solutions for intercultural communicative problems to the students’ own experience. Such an approach fails to take into account the fact that encounters with inadequate communicative acts (behaviours/speech acts) determined by cultural and/or language differences are a daily experience of everybody and require a lot of communicative effort in order to prevent intercultural problems before they happen. The following article discusses what is meant by communicative effort, how past studies on the intercultural competence of (foreign language) teachers account on communicative effort, and how to prepare students to undertake communicative effort in their daily communicative activities in a multicultural and multilingual society.Intercultural (foreign language) teacher training tends to concentrate on selective case studies developed to show communicative problems, caused by their very special intercultural and multilingual characteristics. Identifying meaning by contrast or: how to render implicit knowledge explicit
The paper deals with verbal meaning deficiencies caused by lack of explicit knowledge occurring in Polish and German monolingual dictionaries with respect to the morphological categories of aspect and manner of action. The author shows that contrastive analysis has proved to be the chief means of identifying meaning and rendering implicit knowledge explicit, thus giving birth to the concept of horizontal lexicography and its realization. The paper deals with verbal meaning deficiencies caused by lack of explicit knowledge occurring in Polish and German monolingual dictionaries with respect to the morphological categories of aspect and manner of action. The Moral Turn in the discourse on interculturality
Since the start of the new millennium, research into intercultural communication and intercultural competence has embarked on an open debate on normative orientations for action in situations of intercultural contact. The contribution at hand presents the preliminary results and impressions from a thematic qualitative content analysis of central academic publications on intercultural communication from the past six decades. Earlier utilitarian paradigms on the one side and a growing outreach towards interpretative paradigms from ethnographic research have, of late, steered intercultural communication research into a moral vacuum. Since then, the discipline can be characterized as undergoing a moral turn. As a consequence, future research may face an opportunity of reflecting on its own moral paradigms in order to produce even more precise orientations for action in intercultural contacts.Since the start of the new millennium, research into intercultural communication and intercultural competence has embarked on an open debate on normative orientations for action in situations of intercultural contact. Feedback in language learning and teaching
The text analyzes routes and ways of processing feedback as well as discusses the most important psychological, pedagogical and linguistic factors influencing the effectiveness of feedback in developing learner autonomy and determining its impact on cognitive and affective processes in the learner. It also sets out to assess the place of feedback in the evaluation of educational attainment and to identify ways of promoting so-called formative feedback, both on the school-level and in the language classroom. On the relation of theory and practice in foreign-language instruction
Theoretical glottodidactic discussions are not only limited to the analysis and elucidation of the processes of teaching and learning foreign languages. They also create specific concepts for practical implementation. The essence of these processes is interpreted in many scholarly disciplines – for example, in didactics, glottocodematics, psycholinguistics – in the specific manner of that discipline. Thus, different theories recommended for glottodidactic practice propose their own/differing didactic-methodological solutions. The point of departure that is the language to be taught is, however, constituted by linguistic theories, which set out the distinctive features of that language, and particular glottodidactic theories are concerned with the effective acquisition and mastery of these features.Theoretical glottodidactic discussions are not only limited to the analysis and elucidation of the processes of teaching and learning foreign languages. Learners’ personal narratives on their way to EFL competence: The impact of teachers on learners’ development
In this paper, the authors present an analysis of students’ narratives on their way to becoming competent English as a foreign language (EFL) users. Before presenting our study we refer to the ecological perspective on language learning/teaching, which may show the important impact of the learners’ environment for EFL development. We refer to studies which point to the importance of the environment for language learning and which used various methods of research. In our study, we apply a narrative approach. The collected corpus of narratives is analysed following the grounded theory within the psychological model of wellbeing, i.e. the PERMA model. Eventually, we decided to concentrate on the impact teachers have on learners’ emotions, engagement, meaning, relationships and accomplishment. In this paper, the authors present an analysis of students’ narratives on their way to becoming competent English as a foreign language (EFL) users.
