The hidden reefs in foreign language teaching: on the presence and instruction of discourse markers in textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language
Discourse markers (DMs), represented by words and phrases such as but, you know, moreover, have for many years been a widely discussed topic in linguistics in Poland and abroad. However, no attention has been paid yet to DMs in teaching Polish as a foreign language (PFL). The paper explores this neglected issue by analysing the modes of presentation of DMs in the three most popular series of textbooks for teaching PFL (levels A1-B1). The textbooks were analysed manually to identify DMs and the ways in which they are taught. The results show that the textbooks differ in the number of DMs appearing in them. However, four common problematic aspects of the instruction of DMs in the analysed textbooks were identified: translation of DMs, usage of homographs of DMs, the mechanical nature of exercises and lack of sufficient inpu
Der Einsatz von kurzen lustigen Videos im DaF-Unterricht. Möglichkeiten für die Wortschatz- und Grammatikarbeit
Because emotions play a major role in the learning and memorising process, it is of high importance to create positive emotions in order to make language learning more efficient and enjoyable. The aim of this article is to show how a very popular source of entertainment, funny animal videos, can be used to make language learning more attractive to students. The author explores the connections between emotions – such as fun, joy and curiosity – and brain activity during learning. She then describes a range of exercises based on funny animal videos which can be used to introduce and practice vocabulary and grammar at different language levels and to create positive associations with the foreign language, in this case German

Verbzweitsätze aus kontrastiver Sicht (Deutsch-Italienisch): Das topologische Modell zur Verbstellung
The present paper focuses on the syntactic description of verb-second-sentences from a contrastive view (German-Italian). The study is based upon a corpus of texts written by Italian native speakers of the course German Language for Tourism at the University of Pisa. This paper is composed of two parts: the first one aims at pointing out the main grammatical structural differences between Italian and German declarative sentences as far as the position of the verb is concerned; the second one shows the results gained by analysing the corpus of written texts referring to the position of the verb in declarative sentences in order to provide a successful methodological approach to verb-second-sentences in the didactics of German as foreign language
Profile of a ‘good’ foreign language teacher in a high school: Research report
The aim of this article is to present the profile of a ‘good’ foreign language teacher, which has been created on the basis of the comments made by about 230 students of modern languages at Polish institutions of higher education (colleges and universities) in two voivodeships of Poland, namely Podkarpackie Voivodeship and Wielkopolska Voivodeship. In this image, teacher personality traits, the majority of which are regarded as values not only in professional life (e.g. in the teaching profession), but also in personal life, have ranked the highest. Personality traits have overshadowed the other two groups of qualities, which foreign language teachers are also equipped with, i.e. didactic and glottodidactic ones. This study is part of a larger research project covering all types of schools in Poland (from primary schools, through middle and secondary schools, to colleges and universities
Reflection before action: Students’ perceptions of selected aspects of the language teaching profession
The study explores trainee teachers’ opinions on selected aspects of the language teaching profession. Reflecting on the reasons for becoming a teacher, on a language teacher’s professional qualities, and on the positive and negative aspects of the profession appears to be necessary at the starting point of professional training. A qualitative method was employed to collect the data. The students were asked to answer four survey questions pertaining to the issues mentioned above. Thirty-five undergraduate students completed the survey. Their answers were then analysed, which resulted in suggesting some procedures that could be implemented in the training programme. The findings revealed generally positive attitudes to the language teaching profession. However, some actions should be also taken to eliminate a few subjective theories that could negatively influence the students’ approach, such as the feeling of having power over learners, or controversial ways of dealing with discipline problems in the classroom. The study emphasised the role of reflection in the initial stages of teacher trainin

La fausse simplicité de la prise de parole en classe de langue étrangère
Although the importance of oral production in language learning is recognized,it remains a challenge to convince students to speak. Certainly, this is about daring to take risks, because to speak is to “expose one’s face”. Indeed, when pupils speak, they are placed in relation to their classmates and in relation to the teacher. We cannot therefore rely on the apparent simplicity of speaking in the foreign language class. The research problem presented in this article concerns, among other things, the possible reasons why some students of French as a foreign language remain silent during conversation classes. To this purpose, the findings of the FLCAS questionnaire are presented. This survey tool enabled to nominate one basic reason for the above-mentioned reluctance to speak – language anxiet
Eine Fallstudie über die regionalen Unterschiede der ungarischen Schülerleistungen
The sociocultural and socioeconomic background of pupils is a determinant for their learning process and it has an effect on their learning success and on how easily pupils are able to master the requirements set by school curricula and how they perform on different measuring tasks. This is the reason why we compare in our paper the reading and mathematics results of the National Competence Measurement 2013 with the English and German language results of the secondary school-leaving exams in foreign languages regarding the same pupils. We analyse the data using the SPSS program and we present the results using the MapInfo program. We examine the effects of pupils’ social background, the interactions of different subjects and their regional projections as well. The pupils’ achievements show the same pattern as the development patterns of different geographical areas in Hungary
The influence of affective factors on early foreign language acquisition at elementary level according to the storytelling approach
The article presents the impact of emotions on teaching children foreign languages. To this end, the results of a research project carried out under the auspices of the Institute of German Philology at the University of Silesia in Katowice are discussed. The project consisted in providing language courses at three kindergartens and one primary school. During those courses, German was taught as a foreign language using the storytelling approach. The project results led to the conclusion that, unlike traditional teaching methods, which are based on very limited input and intensive imitation, the teaching method used creates much more favourable conditions for the activation of innate language acquiring processes and takes the level of the children’s cognitive development into account to a larger degree. The objectives of the evaluation were – among other things – to determine how the storytelling approach affects children’s attitudes to a foreign language, whether it arouses their internal motivation for acquiring a foreign language, whether it contributes to building their confidence, and whether it stimulates their imagination and creativity.he article presents the impact of emotions on teaching children foreign languages.
