Behind the scenes of Norway’s role in the Second World War. The Norwegian-British tonnage agreement from 11th November 1939

On the outbreak of the Second World War, Norway’s merchant marine was the fourth largest in the world with its gross register tonnage of 4,8 million. It played substantial role in the state economy as it generated more than one third of the national income in the balance of payments. Yet, the conflict put the Norwegian sea transport in a difficult situation as it dependent on the two warring nations, i.e. Great Britainand Hitler’s Third Reich. To make matters worse, any case of tipping the balance by the Norwegian fleet in a favour of any of the two belligerents might lead to the suspicion that Norwayhad departed from the policy of neutrality. Aware of its perplexing situation, the Norwegian government issued the Provisional decree on the regulation of the conditions of charter during the war, which effectively strengthened its control of the national merchant marine, thus laying sound foundation for a tonnage agreement withGreat Britain which was eventually signed on November 1939. On the strength of this agreement,Norway placed 150 tankers at the disposal of the allies and paved the way for further agreements of this kind.

The paper gives an insight into how Polish learners of Norwegian distribute locative prepositions i and på (in and on) in the most basic spatial contexts. The project is set within SLA studies with cognitive theories and conceptual transfer theory as a key-stone. The data which has been analysed is elicited from four main sources. The two most vital ones are based on ASK-corpus (AndreSpråksKorpus) with the total of 800 informants, and a fill-in-the-gaps survey with 90 participants. The overall aim of the project was to discover patterns native speakers of Norwegian use for distributing i and på. Based on this knowledge, I pinpointed potential mistake domains which could motivate conceptual forward transfer for the Polish learners. Thereafter, Polish informants\u27 performance in L2 was analysed with respect to transfer. I propose  four potential transfer domains, i.e. different conceptualization of some objects and places, marking abstract and concrete contexts, marking of dynamic situations and lexicon shortages combined with language diversity of Norwegian, which should be taken into consideration when acquiring Norwegian

Manlighet i kris? Några anmärkningar om mans-porträtt i tre populärlitterära romaner

The aim of this article is to c cconfront Susan Faludi’s and Thomas Johansson’s theory concerning the masculinity crisis with images of men presented in modern Swedish popular literature. The masculinity crisis theory has risen in relation to feminism and presents the crisis manifesting itself in men’s difficulties in building deep relationships as a consequence of fear of getting close with other people, fears of not living up to the idea of an ideal man and loneliness. Three contemporary Swedish popular novels: Pappadagar i Råttans år (Paternity leave in Rat Year) by Daniel Möllberg (2007), Vi som aldrig sa hora (We who have never said whore) by Ronnie Sandahl (2007) and Vi har redan sagt hej då (We have already said good bye) by Daniel Åberg (2010) have been analysed in the light of the masculinity crisis theory. The analysis focuses on presentation of male characters in those novels, feelings they experience and ways of coping with their personal crisis. The author points out that men’s problems as claimed by the masculinity crisis theory are reflected in the analysed novels to some extent. However, since the characters are able to overcome adversities, one cannot unambiguously state that their masculinity is in crisis

Between a demonstrative and a pronoun. The status of \u27in\u27 in Old Swedish

    Get PDF
The definite article in the Modern Nordic languages is a suffix, etymologically related to a demonstrative. The form is not attested in runic inscriptions, the oldest linguistic sources, but first appears in Icelandic sagas as well as in Swedish and Danish legal codices from 13th century onwards. However, in these texts it does not appear with the same regularity as in modern languages. The Old Swedish form constitutes an intermediate form between a demonstrative, from which it is derived, and the article it has become in Modern Swedish. In the oldest texts it appears in contexts where demonstratives can only be found sporadically and its form suggests it no longer is a demonstrative. At the same time it is not yet obligatory. The aim of this paper is to show the grammaticalization of the definite article as a gradual, dynamic process, involving changes in the form and functional scope of the grammaticalizing item and to consider the properties of the Old Swedish form -in, derived from the distal demonstrative hin ‘that’

Japanische Impressionen in finnischer Poesie. Haiku- Gedichte von Risto Rasa

    Get PDF
German advocate and writer of haiku Wolfgang Weyrauch has stated: “My poem is my knife”. The definition conveys the essence of haiku: maximal amount of content in only three lines. The traditional Japanese haiku consisted of 17 syllables. For the modern European haiku, the number of syllables is secondary. What remains invariable is the lack of rhyme and title, close relationship between the lyrical subject and nature, and reflection. City and mass media are new themes in modern haiku. From the country of anime and manga, haiku have spread to almost every corner of Europe, including the country of the Moomins and mobile phones. In February 2010, Finnish philology students of the Adam Mickiewicz University had the opportunity to meet Risto Rasa, one of the present-day writers of haiku in Finland. In Rasa’s poetry, you can find admiration of nature and the unusualness of seemingly usual every day phenomena. Rasa’s production is infiltrated by the Zen philosophy already present in the works of the 17th century Japanese haiku writers, such as Matsuo Basho. Rasa’s verses appear in three lines. They don’t have rhymes, yet maintain inner harmony

Människan och platsen. Några anmärkningar om Katarina Frostensons författarskap

    Get PDF
Attitude towards space in a literary work is one of the two central and very problematic themes in Katarina Frostenson’s creative activity. The author introduces and describes the place in different manners and usually treats it as a living organism that one can engage in dialogue with; one that evokes memories and releases emotions. For Frostenson the place has an identity because it is the mirror of the soul. Only in contact with the place words are born and the real, inner voice of the lyric subject is released

The Dane Ingeborg von Stemann (1889-1973) took a genuine interest in Poland’s fate. She familiarised herself with the history of the Polish nation, was fascinated by Polish culture and learned the language. Poznań, an intellectual centre, developed a fruitful scientific and political cooperation with Denmark and Sweden in the 19th century. As a result of this cooperation, courses in Scandinavian languages were initiated after Poland regained independence in 1918 and the University of Poznań was founded in 1919. Ingeborg von Stemann, who rendered great services to independent Poland, was appointed the first instructor of Scandinavian languages at Poznań University in 1920
