The purpose of the paper is to compare the images of Oslo, formerly Kristiania, in two Norwegian novels, Hunger (1890) by Knut Hamsun and Rand (Brink, 1990) by Jan Kjærstad. The analysis is based on the fact that the main characters in both works wander around the Norwegian capital. Following problems are discussed in the paper: the protagonists’ relation to the city and the other, their alienation and similarity with the classical figure of the flâneur. The topography of the city in both novels and the role it plays for the main characters is also shortly described

To mænd der i enhver henseende var ens (Sørensen 1984:145) - Symbolers betydning i Villy Sørensens novelle \u27De to tvillinger\u27

The tragic times of the nazi regime and the Cold War showed that modern pluralism cannot be overcome. This problem is reflected in the symbolism of Villy Sørensen’s short stories, which present the sphere of the unattainable and the plural nature of the world, and as such constitute an attempt to overcome the pluralism. Sørensen assigns new meanings to symbols by placing them in modern contexts, which makes the stories universal. The leitmotif of “Strange Stories” (“Sære historier”, 1953) and “Harmless Tales” (“Ufarlige historier”, 1955) includes: loss, disintegration, solitude, absurdity as well as the protagonist’s pursuit of the desired goal. Sørensen’s protagonists pursue the unattainable and the lost, a goal which in itself is both destructive and circular, however dependent on the protagonists’ choices. Consequently, Sørensen’s protagonists gain the status of modern homines viatoris in complicated times. A close reading analysis of “The Two Twins” (“De to tvillinger”, 1952) shows how Sørensen’s approach towards the concept of a symbol is used to express the most fundamental problems of his times. A further analysis focuses on the universality of the story and examines the relevance of its symbolism within the context of current problems

Vem är ”en riktig älvdaling”? Identitetsmarkörer i dagens Älvdalen

    Get PDF
The article is a short analysis of the concept of identity among the population of Älvdalen Municipality and the role of the local dialect Övdalian as an indicator of this identity. The population of Älvdalen Municipality is a clear example of a language group, rather than an ethnic group, which is one of the reasons why Övdalian has not been recognized as a minority language according to the The Framework Convention for the Protection of  National  Minorities and European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.  The local vernacular has lost its former major significance as the carrier of identity and plays nowadays merely a symbolic role. To be “a member of the Övdalian community” is associated today more with the sense of common ancestry and tradition than with the ability of speaking the local vernacular. On the other hand, people from Älvdalen Municipality consider Övdalian as the major factor that unites them

Mellem tanke og billede – om Henrik Nordbrandts bidrag til 1900-tallets metafordebat

    Get PDF
The article departs from the 20th century\u27s academic discussion devoted to the notion of metaphor. The discussion has developed two contradictory claims concerning the role of metaphors in language. One of them considers metaphor as a linguistic decoration or ornament of poetry, whereas the other one enhances its visional and cognitive properties. In the light of this argument, the article presents the development in the use of metaphors throughout the works of one of the most prominent contemporary Danish poets, Henrik Nordbrandt. Henrik Nordbrandt\u27s deeply reflective approach to the role of metaphor has notably marked his poetry since his debut in 1966 until today. The article investigates the use of metaphors in several poems selected from 3 successive phases in Nordbrandt\u27s poetic career. On the basis oft his study the author attempts to point out the major changes in Henrik Nordbrandt\u27s  nderstanding of the role of metaphors in poetry, as well as define his general contribution to the mentioned discussion on the properties of metaphors

En polakk i norsk fortid. Om feil de polskspråklige norskinnlærerne gjør i bruk av perfektum og preteritum

The following paper proves that crosslinguistic influence is the cause of mistakes made by Polish learners of Norwegian as a second language (L2) in their use of Norwegian tenses: perfektum and preteritum. The mistakes seem to be characteristic only for Polish L2 users of Norwegian and not necessarily  for other (at least English and German) L2 users of the language. The paper also mentions some factors which affect the occurrence of transfer. As a conclusion, some arguments are proposed for classifying the transfer as conceptual

The author discusses their use and various types of restrictions regarding their use, and points out feminine forms existing despite the lack of respective masculine forms.
