Świętosława – skandynawistka. O znaczeniu północnego wymiaru w polskiej kulturze i polityce

The article deals with Świętosława (also known as Sigrid the Haughty, Sigrid Storråd, Gunhilda), a figure from the early days of Polish statehood and Christianity, member of the Piast dynasty, a queen of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, a mother of the Canute the Great, a (Viking) king of England and finally both Slav and Pole, and British, and Nordic can be approached from various perspectives. The particularly appealing appears however the opportunity to reflect on the Nordic dimension in Polish social thought, culture and politics.Świętosława faced a challenge of learning the Nordic people, their language, and all this that is included in the programme of Scandinavian studies at the University of Gdansk “from inside”. Her situation resembles the one investigated by Jerzy Szacki in his sociological survey of tradition. It refers to learning oneself an others once the safe boundary is overstepped and the first step towards what is foreign, different and perhaps shocking is made. It relates to the authentic adventure of migration, but also to education and cross-culture communication promoting mutual understanding of differences and to new perspectives for community development. Finally, it concerns the geopolitical implications of northern dimension for the Polish political ethos, culture and education

Głos z „pustej przestrzeni”. O recepcji debiutu Yahyi Hassana w Danii

The article attempts to analyze the reaction to the debut of the Danish poet of Palestinian descent Yahya Hassan (Yahya Hassan. Digte, 2013) among literary reviewers as well as in the Danish society. The impulse to write on this topic came after the nomination of Yahya Hassan for the Polish literary prize European Poet of Freedom 2016. The main aim is to explain the extraordinary fame as a writer and as a public person he gained already in the month of his literary debut (100.000 sold books in two months). The analyze will be focused on two fields of interest: the reception of the poetry itself and the writer’s personae

„Odbijajacy sie czkawka sen złosliwego lingwisty”. O postrzeganiu języka duńskiego i trudnościach w jego przyswajaniu

The paper is an attempt at presenting stereotypes describing the Danish language as one that is unpleasant to listen to and hard to learn as well as analyzing linguistic facts and research findings that may prove the mentioned stereotypes right or wrong. The first part of the paper is therefore based on research within travel literature, while the second part focuses on linguistic data and research within the areas of Polish and Danish grammar (phonetics and phonology in particular) and language acquisition

Zum terminologischen Status der Inkorporation in der deutschen und der dänischen Wortbildungsbeschreibung

The article deals with the subject of incorporation shown as a special kind of composition and derivates formed from phrases (Zusammenbildungen). The author attempts to differentiate between these two types and also describes such phenomena as predicateargument-structure and the principle of the meaningful word. In his opinion it is worth using such terms to give the language description a better overview

The article offers a classification of adjective prefixes in Danish (section 3) including, among others, native and foreign prefixes (e.g. gen- and a-, respectively), genuine prefixes (e.g. ægte-) and particle prefixes (e.g. anti-). Various definitions of prefixal derivatives have been presented in section 4, while section 5 shows examples of and discusses native and foreign negative prefixes modifying the meanings of adjectives in contemporary Danish. The adjectives in question have been analyzed with regards to their structure and the emotional load they convey. Section 6 concludes the paper and includes comments on the productivity of the prefixes in question, as well as synonymy and antonymy in their usage

H.C. Andersens Iisjomfruen und die Unterhaltungsliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts

H.C. Andersen’s fairy tale The Ice Maiden is in many ways very modern, especially when we take into account its formal and rhetorical devices. The narrative is not invented by the author as the story is compound of travel journeys, popular readings of the time and so on. Andersen himself indicated some of his sources. In the following paper I would like to discuss the relationship between the fairy tale and the so called „Gebirgserzählung“ from the 18th and 19th century, which was extremely popular at the time. While the core of a “Gebirgserzählung” often consists in a young couple, that after many troubles in the end comes happily together, this is not the case in The Ice Maiden, as Andersen let the protagonist die. It looks as if Andersen would argue in favour of predetermination, based on Christian belief. However, this conclusion is not convincing because it fails to explain the obvious injustice of Rudy’s fate. In what follows I suggest a rhetorical explanation of the protagonist’s death. In such a view Rudy’s death is not to be understood as predetermined, but as a result of Andersen’s fear of his own modernity. What he demonstrates is how an entire story can be the result of other stories, how literature is based on literature. But the author himself seems not to be mature for this insight and that’s the reason why he let the protagonist die

The ethical turn in the early writings of Pär Lagerkvist

In the text presented, I have undertaken an analysis of the early essays of Pär Lagerkvist (dated 1915-1917), both the ones published in periodicals and the unpublished manuscripts in the possession of the Kungliga Biblioteket in Stockholm. In those essays, Lagerkvist paid considerable attention to the matters of the ethics of art and the conflict between the ethical and aesthetical criteria of assessment of the work of art, and those problems are discussed also in Lagerkvist’s letters from that time. The aim of the article is to present this less known area of the artist’s activity and to point to the fact that the consequences of those reflections can be tracked in Lagerkvist’s literary works written in the same time period. Moreover, it can be argued that the understanding of the ethical art and the moral sense of the artistic activity presented in the early texts became an import and lasting feature of Lagerkvist’s writing – and, consequently, it can be claimed that the essays under discussion have a formative effect on Lagerkvist’s later output

Lithuanian discontinuatives nebe- / jau nebe- ‘no more, no longer’and German-Lithuanian language contacts

    No full text
This paper aims to describe the origin of the Lithuanian discontinuatives nebe- / jau nebe- ‘no more, no longer’. In van der Auwera’s terms they represent the so-called ‘still’ discontinuatives, i.e. they consist of a continuative morpheme -be- and negation ne-. In Old Lithuanian texts (16th century) their productivity is strictly connected to the area of Lithuania Minor (former East Prussia). Both variants (i.e. nebe- / jau nebe- ‘no more, no longer’) have structural counterparts in German, which seems to suggest that nebe- and jau nebe- have come into being under influence of German

Saamskie teatry: między lokalnością a obcością?

Institutional theatres in Sapmi have a relatively brief history but they are based upon traditional cultural heritage (the yoik, the art of storytelling, shamanistic seances). At the same time they are open to impulses from other cultures and theatrical traditions (European and non-European) that contribute to the distinct features of Samic theatrical performance when it comes to texts, the aesthetics of performance, and acting traditions. The article outlines the Samic theatre landscape in general and then proceeds to focus on the multicultural aspects of "Ridn\u27oaivi ja nieguid oaidni", a performance by the Beaivváš Sami Teáhter. The article also calls attention to the problematic nature of the concept "cultural dialogue" in a situation when the borderlines between individual cultures are no longer obvious, and when it is no longer easy to identify the partners in a dialogue unequivocally
