Die Vorrechte des Adels in Bayern und Tirol. Steuer-, Gerichts- und Jagdprivileg im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert

    Get PDF
The present bachelor thesis examines whether the nobility were a homogenous group in terms of privileges granted by the sovereign or not. I argue that the amount and extent of these could vary. As shown for the case studies Bavaria and Tyrol and the selected group of privileges (tax, jurisdiction and hunting) the nobility were eager to preserve and strengthen their claim on special rights, while the sovereign, as well as the emergent bourgeoisie, tried to diminish and disprivilege them. This evolved as a continuous struggle in which the lower nobility clung to their claims jealously. As a result the nobility were neither acting as one group nor were the privileges under examination always and everywhere accessible to them

“An meine getreuen österreichischen Völker“. The “Völkermanifest“ of Charles I of Austria from October 16th, 1918 – A late attempt to avoid the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire? Charles I of Austria was Habsburg’s last emperor. The interpretations of his person and reign range from the mythical “emperor of peace“ to the powerless ruler who sees his empire falling apart. On October 16th, 1918, Charles enacted the “Völkermanifest“. The purpose of this paper is to examine the central reasons for this enactmen as well as the political background and driving powers. Was the Manifest the attempt of a monarch to avoid the apparantly inevitable decline of his empire? What are the circumstances of the Manifest’s evolution and why did it fail? The examination focusses also on the reactions of politics, population and the press to the Manifest’s decree

Torture and terrorism. The softening of the absolute prohibition of torture in theory and practice. This seminar-paper deals with society’s handling of torture in conjunction with modern terrorism, especially after 9/11. Even if torture is abolished and outlawed by several international rights, there were and there are some hypothetical scenarios, in which torture seems to be justifiable – at least from moral views. How states and sociologists deal with these scenarios in reality and how particularly the US.-government handles the threat of terrorism with or without torture is going to be cleared in this paper

Die Rezeption des deutschen Fürstenbundes. Von Zeitgenossen bis Leopold von Ranke

The following paper examines how the history of the “German Fürstenbund” from 1785 was told by contemporary and late 19th century politicians and historians. This League was an expression of the dualism between the House of Habsburg and the Hohenzollern dynasty in the late period of the Holy Roman Empire. All four authors under investigation were explicitly or, in the case of Leopold von Ranke, implicitly partisan in favour of either Habsburg or Prussia

Die Nuklearpolitik der USA unter George W. Bush und Barack Obama am Beispiel Nordkorea

The present bachelor thesis examines the nuclear policy of the United States of America. North Korea serves as a case study. As will be shown the USA treat allied countries differently to opposed countries like North Korea or Iran. Allied countries like Israel, Pakistan or Saudi-Arabia do not face the same treatment or sanctions by the United States as do the so called “rogue states”. This leads to a contradiction in US-policy: The inner conflict of maintaining the only superpower in the world and the own goal of a good, moral nation, expressing in the concept of American exceptionalism. While the policy of Bush jr. focused on preemption and hung on to nuclear weapons as an instrument of deterrence, Obama, who set himself the goal to free the world of nuclear weapons, finds himself in a dilemma between Realpolitik and morality
