Digitally-Assisted Blended Teaching and Learning of Ukrainian: What Do Instructors Think?
The blended-learning model, a combination of traditional face-to-face and student self-study online learning, continues to attract the attention of scholars and practitioners of language teaching. Our study is a contribution to the growing body of literature on the implementation and use of this model in a foreign language classroom. We focus on beginners’ Ukrainian classrooms in which the blended-learning resources from PodorozhiUA.com have been implemented by a number of instructors of different programs. The study explores instructors’ perspectives oftheir experiences with the model, and their views on the effects of the model on students’ learning, instructors’ teaching practices, and relationships in the learning community. The study takes a qualitative approach with data collected via focus group discussions. By empirically researching instructors’ views, the analysis provides valuable insights intothe field of digitally-assisted language learning and instruction
Google Translate - Friend or Foe in the Eyes of Speakers of Related Slavic Languages?
In recent years, the teachers of Slovene as a second language at university lectorates have noticed a significant increase in the use of machine translation (MT) among students. In the summer of 2021, I therefore conducted a survey on the use of MT among foreign students at the University of Ljubljanawho learn Slovene. The 104 valid responses showed that international students find MT –almost exclusively Google Translate – very helpful. Although the vast majority of respondents speak one of the South Slavic languages as their first language, they often use MT via English; they use it mainly when preparing written university assignments and when studying literature, less often during lectures and most rarely in written exams. They translate single words and phrases more frequently than longer sections or whole texts and point out problems such as poor translation of colloquial expressions and the need for post-editing of machine translations. Due to MT, they believe they get around more easily in the Slovene environment, learn Slovene faster and use it more correctly, but they do not agree that MT enables them to communicate better in Slovene. Thus, despite the increasing quality of MT, learning the language of the environment in which one is studying is still essential
The Role and Use of Digital Media in the Russian Language Classroom: An Empirical Baseline Study in German-Speaking Countries
This article exemplifies the role digital media play in the Russian language classroom at secondary schools in Austria, Germany, and South Tyrol. The presented baseline study aims at investigating the types of digital media, how frequently these are employed, and the specific purposes they are used for in the Russian language classroom. Moreover, this study examines whether and in how far Russian teachers are satisfied with the pre-and in-service teacher training they received in the field of digital media as well as the digital literacy of teachers and adolescent learners of Russian. The data were collected in a mixed-methods procedure: quantitative data from online-questionnaires and qualitative data from face-to-face semi-structured interviews. In this article, selected study results will be presented and discussed
Didaktische Herausforderungen sozialbasierter Lernangebote in Zeiten der COVID-19-Pandemie: Praxisbeispiel einer Online-Plattform zum Russischlernen
This paper describes the use of theasynchronous, structured, and online-based learning platform “Trans-Siberian Language Journey” (German: Transsibirische Sprachreise) during the COVID-19 pandemic with a heterogeneous group of Russian foreign language learners in Berlin. The platform is based on a WordPress website with anH5P plugin. Additionally, synchronous online meetings via Zoom as well as an online chat accompanied the course. The following paper presents the structure of the course as well as the didactic considerations regarding the development of the materials. Moreover, the technical side of the platform, further technical alternatives and the feedback of the participants will be reflected on. Finally, future development possibilities of online-based asynchronous learning settings in adult education as well as in the school context will be discussed.

Editorial Digital / Distance Learning
A new issue of the Open Access Journal DiSlaw (Didaktik slawischer Sprachen) is now available. The second DiSlaw-issue is dedicated to the topic Distance / Digital Learning that has preoccupied us on various levels and has eventually become a new reality since the COVID-19-pandemic hit. The sudden and constant use of digital media for teaching and learning purposes as well as their effective and learning outcome-oriented implementation did indeed pose some new challenges for us. In reference to the ongoing digitisation of teaching and learning materials, Funk (2016, p. 439) points to a “threefold problem”: firstly, teacher educators and textbook authors are being replaced by freelance editors and non-specialist developers; secondly, there appears to be a lack of criteria-based analyses of materials for mobile learning scenarios; lastly, due to the increasing diversity of learning environments and learning paths the weakly established empirical impact research on textbooks becomes incrementally less accessible to observation.
Digitalisation, Digitisation and other "Virtualities"
This article focuses on Russian terminology associated with the digital age. Specifically, the author defines the terms digitalizatsiya, tsifrovizatsiya and informatizatsiya, and explores their frequency of use based on ruscorpora.ru, synonymous expressions and different spellings (e.g. didzhitalizatsiya). Finally, it discusses the influence of digitalisation processes on language and communication
Ausgabe 1: Motivation
We have dedicated this first issue to the topic of motivation, as it has occupied our minds in many different ways over the past year. Motivation is generally seen as an important factor influencing (successful) learning. However, in the broad field of motivation research, we have so far found only a few studies on the learning and teaching of Slavic languages. With the first issue of DiSlaw, we intend to introduce the discourse on motivational issues into the Slavic languages community

Connection and Tension in First-Year Online Russian: A Glimpse into Learners’ Experiences
This article explores the relationship between students’ motivation and the online language learning environment of a first-year elementary Russian class. This small-scale exploratory, qualitative study was conducted in an online synchronous setting. Its primary goal is to address the following questions: 1. What are some of the affordances and challenges of learning beginning Russian online? 2. How are students motivated during and as a result of the online language learning process? The participants in this study are students who attended beginning L2 Russian classes over the course of an academic year. Data points for this study include the students’ language-learning journals and artifacts as well as conversations about their language learning experiences. Students shared their motivations and future goals for studying Russian, and their overall experiences of learning Russian in a synchronous online setting. Students stated which activities they found most effective and motivating for their learning and reported conflicting feelings about learning Russian in an online setting: while the online setting is perceived as being more “convenient,” there are more distractions and fewer opportunities for social interactionЭта статья исследует соотношение между мотивацией учащихся и онлайн-средой на примере студентов первого курса, изучавших русский язык как иностранный.
